Amir Khan defeats Chris Algieri but fails to out do Manny Pacquiao’s performance

Brooklyn, NY – World ranked welterweight contender and former light welterweight champion, Amir ‘King’ Khan returned to the ring this past Saturday night against former champion, once beaten Chris Algieri. The fight was thought by many to be a mismatch on paper due to the fact that Algieri was coming off of a one sided decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in which he was knocked down six times. Khan was coming in off a very impressive decision win over Devon Alexander and all the talk in the lead up to the Algieri bout was that this was an audition for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s September 12th fight date.

As the bell for the first round rang, the obvious difference in speed was quite evident. Khan worked behind a quick jab and fast one-two combinations. Algieri was getting caught early and seemed like he was going to have trouble catching up to Khan, but late in the first, Algieri landed a solid right hand on the side of Khan’s face that was a wake up call to fans and Amir Khan that this was not going to be the cake walk everyone expected.

Chris Algieri came into the bout wanting to prove he was better fighter than what he showed against Manny Pacquiao and with the help of new trainer John David Jackson, he showed just that. He came in with an attacking pressure style in the hopes of making Khan uncomfortable and possibly landing a fight changing punch. While Algieri did have some success with this style and clearly won some rounds, the faster more talented fighter was Amir Khan.

Khan while not overly impressive in the fight, was still more active, as he was consistently landing his jab and moving effectively in the bout. As the fight wore on, Algieri became less effective and Khan had some of his best rounds late. When the final bell rang and the scorecards of 115-113, 117-111 and 117-111 were read, Amir Khan was announced winner by unanimous decision.

With the win, Amir Khan is now riding a five fight win streak as he looks to stake his claim as the next foe for Floyd Mayweather. Having unsuccessfully campaigned to fight Mayweather in 2014, Khan hopes that 2015 can bring him the fight he desperately wants before the pound-for-pound king retires.

Much was said of Khan’s hand speed and ability to box as a possible kryptonite for Mayweather, but this fight proved that Amir Khan still has many defensive vulnerabilities. Chris Algieri was looked at as a largely outmatched foe coming into the fight, having been dismantled by Manny Pacquiao months prior and having won a controversial fight with Ruslan Provodnikov beforehand, yet he was able to put forth a respectable performance in which he had many moments of success.

This performance was not what Amir Khan had intended for, but it may actually lure Mayweather into fighting for his final contracted fight with Showtime. Out of all the current candidates for the “Mayweather Sweepstakes”, Khan has the largest fan base and also holds the WBC Silver welterweight belt, making him a very credible opponent. That, alongside the fact that Khan struggled with a relatively inexperienced Algieri, seems like a risk worth taking as ‘Money’ Mayweather nears his exit from the sport.

    Amir was underwhelming

Big time. If Khan would have fought someone who was more skillfully sound, he would’ve lost. No way he beats Mayweather!

Khan is one of the most overrated boxers today. He does have very fast hands, but he seems to think that his blinding speed allows him to get away with mistakes against professionals. He got knocked out twice because of his own ego, and not to mention that glass jaw. Last night he thought he won the fight before he even got in the ring. I used to think he had the best chance to beat floyd, but after last night, i think he’s easy work for floyd. Algieri exposed him last night, so did garcia and prescott when they knocked him out. Btw……i had algieri winning 7 rounds to 5.

Think you must have been watching a very different fight to everyone else? Take it you have a career as a judge in Vegas???

  6. karla says:

im not impressed on amir khan chin is still questionable, especially the right hand of algieri but no power if he want s to fight gayfloyd he has to cut the ring and neutralized the right counter and the dirty tactics holding grappling running every jab by mayweather is a point esp in vegas that kind of perfornance is difficult for khan still lot things to do with hunter

  7. ed says:

Nope, amir clown doesn’t deserve a shot. What he needs to do is just retire. No will ever remember his name. Lol.

    • Peter Jansen says:

Khan deserves a shot. A shot to hug, run, and dance with the self-proclaimed TBE.

      • neil says:

He deserves a shot at. COTTO, BRADLEY, THURMAN, REMACH WITH MAIDANA, MARQUEZ, PROVODNIKOV, RIOS , A REMACH WITH GARCIA, KELLBROOK IS THE LEAST POPULAR IN THIS LIST BUT YES HE NEEDS TO FIGHT HIM . THEN HE CAN FIGHT MAYWEATHER OR EVEN PACQUAIO..

I think he need to go back to Pakis Tan, to train with tali Ban, on the day of rama Dan …. Paq vs Chris =6knockdowns, Amir vs. CHRIS = 0 and he had a gut’s comparing himself to Paquiao … what an ass !

  8. Reagan says:

He thinks he Khan get a big time fight. That’s all he needs.

  9. paul says:

you dont need defense against a guy like floyd who is too chicken to throw a punch….

  10. Jason Lake says:

Arrogant fighter can never be earned a respect. Khan is a dilussional who is self proclaimed the best is a class B fighter.

  11. gerald says:

better for Khan to have a tune up fight late this year and face pacman in london next year they can make huge money than fighting mayweather this year,he is not yet ready for mayweather.

    • tony says:

He is not ready for Pacquiao either. Pacquiao will make a basketball out of his head. A good match for him style-wise would be Marquez.

  12. ervin says:

It will be another boring fight night if Khan ends up fighting Mayweather. Get him to fight Pacquiao in London and the fans can expect real fire works that will be initiated by Pacquiao.

  13. Nick says:

Pacman and Khan in Dubai! Pacman will gobble him up considering that he had a hard time with Algieri. Overated. Kudos to Algeiri for having the heart.

  14. carlo says:

Why not Khan have a rematch with Danny Garcia? If he can beat Danny Garcia, he has the right to fight Mayweather.

  15. Kidd Kulangot GirlGago says:

Amir Queen Khan has no chance vs. Fraud ScumWeather Jr. The fight seemed closer than the score indicated. Algieri stunned Khan’s titanium chin 2x in the 1st round and Khan wobbled.
I’ll be surprised if Amir wins 2 rounds vs. JailWeather

    • Peter Jansen says:

Khan won’t win against TBE. No one wins against floyd in vegas. His fights are all fixed to let him win.

  16. Kang Kong Kernitz says:

Khan is too chicken to even get a rematch with Prescott!

Is Khan really fast? I guess he is! He’s so fast, his fight with Prescott ended in less than a round!…with him on the deck and breathing heavily lol!

  17. Peter Jansen says:

Khan will lose to Floyd TBE. Floyd will outrun and outhugged him. There won’t be any punch made. They will just dance the whole fight.

  18. wengz2002 says:

Khan is the Mayweather’s best chance if knocking out an opponent legitimately in more than a decade!

Mayweather-Khan will most likely be boring!

  19. JustMike says:

You guys sound like jaded little girls attacking Mayweather. Khan is fast and has some technical ability in his footwork but his timing seemed a mess. Some of his punches looked pretty solid, especially certain combos to the body that offset Algieri, but I don’t think he was picking his shots as well as he could have.

He didn’t look masterful by far and I wonder if he really is a bigger draw than most south american fighters.

  20. baz says:

hugger vs cuddler, nope..wanna see a waltz?

  21. Joe Young says:

If King Kahn can beat Mayweather I am mighty Joe Young. Kahn is so overrated it’s sad. Maywheather can beat ten women, go to jail for ten yes, come out of jail and kick Kahn,’s ass

  22. big mike says:

Mayweather is going to beat who ever he fight against, then come back next year and beat Manny again to retire at 50-0

  24. King Boxing Historian says:

Amir is target practice for Floyd and it wouldn’t be a great match up for a fighter on the level of mayweather to make a grand exit on the sport he spent a lifetime in I say, lay it all on the line!..I blood sweat tears and guts Floyd would annihilate Khan!!!

  25. Anonymous says:

Hey Hey now! You Mayweather pole riders save a little bit of that for Bieber, before he kicks you’s guy’s asses.
