Andre Ward: “I think Manny Pacquiao has a great legacy, but we got to be honest about some of his fights”

In boxing one thing every fighter strives for is legacy. It is how a fighter is defined and often remembered. When it comes to boxing’s two biggest stars, legacy is fiercely debated. In part 3 of my “On The Ropes” interview with Andre Ward, I asked a fighter who is building his own legacy how he think Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao compare when it comes to accomplishments in the sport. I also get Andre’s analyst view on the future of Pacquiao and how he thinks he will do in his return to the ring against Brandon Rios. In addition Ward touches on his future in the sport and what fans can expect once he returns to the ring. Here is what Andre Ward had to say

Jenna J:
You have talked about legacy before Andre, so I would like to get your thoughts on the debate amongst boxing fans regarding boxing’s two biggest stars, Mayweather Jr. & Pacquiao. Even with Pacquiao’s losses, people say Manny fought better competition and will leave behind more of a legacy. When it’s all said and done do you think Pacquiao’s resume could speak louder then Mayweather’s?

Andre Ward: I think Manny has a great legacy, but we got to be honest about some of his fights though. The De La Hoya fight, that’s a fight I don’t know how it would of played out if De La Hoya had been able to come in full strength, but it’s no secret that De La Hoya really had to suck himself down. Cotto had to lose weight. I’m not taking nothing from Pacquiao but with all due respect to Manny you gotta to look at Floyd’s resume, and people love to hate Floyd but people have to understand what he has been doing since the 90’s, people just totally wiped out the 90’s and forgot about it when it comes to Floyd Mayweather.

After Floyd fought Genaro Hernandez, after his first year as a professional, first year and half, the dude didn’t not look back, he’s fought one good fighter after another and he’s beat them. Just compare the De La Hoya fight for Pacquiao, with the one with Floyd. Floyd did not have any say in the ring size, he fought at a weight class above his, I think De La Hoya got to pick the gloves, everything was against Floyd with De La Hoya compared to when Manny fought him.

Jenna J: Why do you think people don’t give Floyd credit for the things he has done in the ring?

Andre Ward: I think sometimes people just love to hate Floyd, and maybe it’s some of the stuff he does outside the ring, whatever the case might be, but from a boxing stand point, man the dudes legacy is what it is, he’s a living legend of our sport and I think people need to stop looking for a reason to take away from it. Him not fighting Manny Pacquiao is not going to have, in my opinion, any effect on his legacy. We don’t know all the details of what went on behind the scenes, we think we know, but we don’t really know.

I think people just got to understand that the guy is who he is, he’s a living legend of our sport, appreciate him while he’s here and just enjoy the ride until it’s over, and the same thing with Manny. He is a great, great fighter, I believe he is going to be a Hall of Famer, and I know he’s coming of that tough loss to Marquez, but Manny has fought everybody, he’s kind of a throw back from that standard. So Manny has got his legacy too. I don’t think we should compare, I think we should enjoy both guys for the way they did their thing and just enjoy the ride until they both ride off into the sunset and retire.

Jenna J: Andre, since we are speaking of Manny Pacquiao, I’m curious to get your thoughts on his upcoming return to the ring against Brandon Rios. What do you think of that fight, and also how do you think Pacquiao do coming back from the Marquez KO loss?

Andre Ward: Man I don’t know, I don’t know. This is a tough one to call because neither one of these fighters is going to be hard to find in this fight and people got to remember Brandon is coming off a tough loss too, it was not getting knocked out cold like Manny, but he is coming of a loss too. I think with both fighters coming off of loses that both men are hungry.

It’s something about getting your lights turned out like what happened to Manny, not a lot of guys can comeback from that and regain their dominance. Whether it’s just confidence or maybe something in the body short circuits and you just can’t take a punch like you once did, but if I think anyone can do it, it’s Manny.

I think with Rios, his goal is to show people “Hey I can finish this guy and I want to be the guy who’s name is attached to that, plus I’m coming of a loss.” I think it’s going to be a tremendous battle for however long it lasts, and I don’t think it’s going to go the distance, but I couldn’t tell you who is going to win this fight, but this is a 50/50 fight.

Jenna J: I just got 2 more questions for you Andre. When you return to the ring, hopefully in 2013, what can fans expect from you and what kind of fights can we expect going forward in the future?

Andre Ward: Man I just think that from the injury standpoint, people gotta understand something, and I think they’ll realize this once I get back. I did a documentary with my friend and one of the first things I thought of when I got the diagnosis from the doctor was, I can’t disappear for 4 or 5 months. And what that means is I wanna document everything that happens from this point until I get back in the ring, and we’ve done that.

We got real life vulnerable moments on the documentary, going to the doctors at 4 in the morning, getting ready to get surgery, them wheeling me in, we got all that stuff. I think when people see that, they’ll realize the depths of the injury. I’ve already had this injury, I’ve already had a torn rotator since I’ve been 12 years old, we just fought, we just built the muscles up around it and we used it. But that was fixed, they were able to grab the rotator which wasn’t attached and attach it back and I feel like I got a whole new shoulder.

I got a lot of pop in my right hand that I didn’t have before because of the injury, along with the layoff and the different things I’ve been going through, my hunger is through the roof. So whoever it is and whenever it is, man I think the fans can just buckle their seat belts because I’m going to continue to put on great performances until my career is over.

Jenna J: Alright and finally to the fans, the fans who support you and the fans who follow you on twitter, I know you’re very socially active, is there any message you want to pass along to them?

Andre Ward: I appreciate all you guys, I look at the tweets, I look at the instagram, I look at my facebook page, man I got a lot of love out there, it’s not all bad. And even to the fans that maybe don’t support me, I need you too because you always need that element when people say you can’t do something, or “you’re not going to be able to pull this off, man your career is over.” That kind of stuff keeps you hungry and with both those elements, the supporters and the naysayers, I feel like I’m right where I need to be, so I gotta give a shout out to both sides.

Even to the writers who have their agendas, the ones that don’t have anything good to say ever, keep writing, I appreciate it. My name is staying out there even thought it’s like they try to give me a bad review, my name is still out there and the good thing about boxing is, no matter what they write about you, you always got that night where you can get in the ring and show them if what that person wrote is valid or what they wrote was not valid.

And to the writers that are fair and honest and call it like they see it, I appreciate you guys too, we need each other, the fighters need the writers and the writers need the fighters so we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing and I believe we’re going to get in the ring before this year is out and everybody tune in.

Ward is like Maywather, and is nut hugger or FLoyd. Pac beat everyone. Ward needs to shut his face before the great pacman comes up and shuts it for him

    • estong bicol says:

Pacquiao fought de la Hoya because de la Hoya want it. And since he is naturally bigger than Pacquiao, he offered to come down in weight. will you take it against Pacquiao? Same thing with Margarito who outweight Pacquiao by 17 lbs on fight night, so with Cotto. Why did they agreed to come down in weight? Because they thought they could defeat a small Pacquiao. Pacquiao did not ask for these fights, it was them because of Pacquiao’s popularity period.

    • Anonymous says:

You are an idiot….Floyd and Ward are not friends by any means and as for Pac fighting Ward-gtfoh.

  2. Jake says:

Legacy wise Pacquiao is above Mayweather ,Pacquiao fought Barerra,Morales and Marquez at their peak,Mayweather resume doesn’t have any trio with that caliber,he was beaten by Castillo in the first fight,he beat Hernandez but already in the downside, beat Corrales who is not in the league of the trio,Pacquiao fought,de la Hoya fight was a split decision and refuse to give the re match,so de la Hoya choose Pacquiao,he didnt impose his terms on de la Hoya,de la Hoya was calling the shots, when he came to fight drained it was not Pacquiao’s fault.

    • Anonymous says:

In 2002 Mayweather was a lightweight while Barrera was a featherweight, how do you make a fight like that? It seems to me that people will accuse Mayweather of ducking irrespective of what the facts are – I’m sure in some corner people will say ducked Klitschko..

    • Brian Fire says:

Legacy is NOT determined by HATERS! There is NO WAY Manny will stand above Floyd. He was knocked out COLD! Not to mention he had a few VERY close fights against Marquez. Floyd was a champ before Manny started Boxing! He is STILL undefeated. Trying to diminish the quality of opponents Floyd faced shows your lack of knowledge of the sport.Corrales was a MAJOR threat when Floyd bat him easy. Corralles is the SAME fighter who had those great fights with Castillo. Genaro Hernandez was NOT on the downside of his career…he had just won the belt not too long before Floyd took it.

  3. boxing fan says:

Manny Pacquiao’s legacy is filled with catchweights and gift decisions. Plus, he fought mostly one-dimensional fighters like Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito, and now Brandon Rios. Floyd Mayweather fought whoever the best is at their weight.

    • estong bicol says:

Well, Pacquiao is a one dimentional fighter too according to the Mayweathers. Mayweather at their best weight? Look at the Mayweather vs Marquez fight boy. Marquez climb two weight division only to be cheated on fight time by your idol! Lol!

    • Boxing Fan too says:

Fought all the best? Are you kidding.
He ducked Margarito, Clottey, Cotto on Prime, Mosley on Prime.

    • MannytheGreat says:

Oh, there u are, the dumbest Mayweather fan of all time. Mayweather ducked Pacquiao when Mayweather suppose to beat the Pacman as Mayweather claimed as the most easiest fight for him and when Mayweather suppose to get 100 million for fighting the easiest opponent like he said he would knock Pacquiao out. But instead he ask to demand a ridiculuous random blood test and ask for all the money in the PPV. Pacquiao already agreed to the ramdom blood test and agreed to get smaller cut of the PPV and yet your Gayweather idol never step to the plate and insist he already offered Pacquiao 40 million take it or leave it. Now you are saying the Pacquiao’s legacy is full of catchweight when he only fought twice in a catchweight first in the Cotto and then the Margarito, that’s it. The dela hoya fight never be considered as catchweight because they agreed to fight at welterweight limit and it was dela hoya who stipulated that not Pacquiao who went up 2 weight division and almost no one give him a chance to win at that time.

    • Anonymous says:

wrong. Floyd duck the best fighters in his division. not because he scared. its because he went for the less risk more reward fights. period.

    • balagtas says:

Canelo and Marquez are not catch weight? Use your mind. Gayweather came overweight against smaller newly FEDMarquez. Cotto fights Meyweather above his usual weight which is welterweight. Cotto only had one fights in middleweight when he fights Geyweatther.
Also Mr Ward, Cotto usual weight is welterweight and not middle weight, and Dela Hoya is in best shape when he fights Pacman. All boxing specialist do not give Pacman a chance of winning because it was Dela Hoya who call the shot while Pacman had just fight from once in lightweight to fight Golden Boy in superwelter.
Please Mr Ward, don’t be bias.

    • reyocs says:

hey man are ok?or such a brainless commentor…?

    • Anonymous says:

SO WHY HE DOESNT FIGHT PACQUIAO? ITS BECA– USE MAYWEATHER IS A CHERRY PICKER BUM!

    • Rey says:

are you dumbazz, floyd fight the best?wake up,or are yoy joking, but i think your a dumbazz ignoramus.

    • Anonymous says:

Floyd ducked fighters he knows at their peak of their career and has a real threat and fought them after they are washed up. 1) Margarito – He totally ducked this dude 2) Cotto – Fought after he was totally destroyed by Manny 3) Marquez – He comes 5 lbs heavier in the match 4) Shane Mosley – was ducked by Floyd many times and decided to fight him after he was banged up it takes a decade for Floyd before he took this match. 5) Guerrero – Oh come on was this really a match, Floyd expected a sparring and sparring he gets. How about Manny? DelaHoya, Ricky, Cotto, Margarito and Shane Mosley all thought that they can toyed the little guy and voluntarily offer to come down on weight. Is that Manny’s fault he just accepted the challenge. so what are you Gayweather fans are crying now?

    • reyocs says:

      wahahahahaha..coward american boy

  4. John says:

Ward is right, Pacquiao always cherry picked his opponents right after they came off of loses or made them cut weight till they were completely depleted. Margariot right after Mosley finished him, Cotto after Margarito finished him, made Oscar and Erik Morales kill themselves on the scales. Smart fans will see Pacquiaos legacy for what it is. He ducked and dodged all he could.

    Mayweather > Pacquiao

    • estong bicol says:

Morales killed himself on weight to fight Pacquiao? From what planet are you man?

      • John says:

Yeah they forced Morales to come in at 130, they said they wouldnt take the fight if Morales came in at 133, at 132 they would but they would fine Morales like 1 million. It was clear Morales was dead before the fights even started. Pacquiao and Roach were terrified of Morales, they knew he could beat the shit out of pacquaio if they fougth him at a fair catch weight.

    • estong bicol says:

Will you blame Mayweather for the knockout of a willing victim Ortiz?

    • Boxing Fan too says:

Instead of calling him a catchweight king.
Why don’t you just accept the fact that he beat those big guys.
Fighters fighting in Higher weight level.

Are you all blind? Pacquiao shouldn’t be even competing with them because his size is only for Lightweight.

      • Becool says:

        you got it!

its professional boxing. if the fighter wont sign the contract, nothing will happen.

    • @ JOHN….whats like the taste of FLOYDIOT GAYWEATHER family scared Black Dick? did you satisfied with them? lol…lol…lol….trully said…LOVE IS BLIND for John hahahahahahaha…

    • Rey says:

haha, another ignoramus, its mayweather who was cherry picking you dumbazz, look at the quality of opposition of each fightr if you know boxing you cuksuker

    • Buxer Blugger says:

Andre Ward contradicted himself all the time. When Pacquiao lost to Bradley he told his “friend” Bradley in an interview that he should return the belt to Manny Pacquiao because he clearly lost the fight. On their rematch, he favored Braley to win the fight. He will never surpass Manny Pacquiao in popularity. Ward is no way the #2 P4P. Pacquiao has fought more P4P opponent in the last two years and beating the #3 best P4P shoul elevate him even higher than Floyd. Both Ward and Mayweather have fought lesser opponents than Pacquiao in the last 2 years. Nobody have given Pacquiao the chance of coming back and winning in dominate passion but he proved everyone wrong. He just beat an undefeated #3 best P4P in the world that’s an impressive win. He should be the #1 P4P in the list.

  5. Lindsay says:

Let’s be honest both of em cherry picked and cheated on the scales but Pacquiao beat morales at 130 lbs a weight that he has fought at for years no catchweight, he fought odlh at 147 a wt that odlh chose it was not pacquiao who demanded it and cotto it was just two lbs south of 147 just like what fmj is doing now with canelo 2 lbs below 154 and cheated marquez by weighing 2 lbs over the contracted wt. They both suck.

  6. eanalo says:

love how Andre Ward conveniently overlooked the fact Pacquiao had to climb two weight division to face ODH. Yeah, sure…would make complete sense for a lightweight to jump into jr middleweight without testing the waters. Cotto said he wouldnt be weakened by the catchweight of 2 pounds on 24/7 and never complained after, for some reason this keeps surfacing as a defense mechanism to how he was drastically weakened despite entering fight night at 146.

Even better is how he glorifies Mayweather and puts him on the pedestal as a fighter that comes in the ring that’s crystal clean. A blown out Marquez, dont believe it! Controvertial KO with Ortiz, lets sweep that under the rug but make sure that KO image is on the highlight reels. I’ll give credit where its due and Mayweather is clearly an exceptional fighter but his legacy an ATG will never be sealed until he fights Pacquiao. Even a win over Canelo will just edge him outside of top 20 ATG.

What separates him from the top 10 is his willingness to take the best in the era. Though Pacquiao’s record is blemished from losses he seeked the challenges of climbing the weight and fought the best (at least early in his career). Pacquiao took the harder road to get to the top.

    • Rasek Jr. says:

Agree! And Ward’s got some nerve criticizing Manny’s win over Cotto when he himself made Chad Dawson go down to his division. That was an even bigger jump than the 1 pound (I say 1 coz Cotto was 146 in his previous bout with Clottey) Miguel had lose against Pac. Does that mean his KO of Dawson should have an asterisk? Is it fair for someone to say “we’ll, ward had to drain Dawson to beat him. I’m not taking anything away from Andre but you have to question that victory.” See how he feels when somebody tells him that.

  7. Manuel Largo says:

MANNY AND FLOYD man they AIN’T SH*t like uncle Roger would say! the the they AIN’T they AIN’T SH*t as pops should say

  8. Boxing Fan too says:

    S2PID ANDRE WARD!
Have you forgotten that Pacquiao came from Flyweight 112 pounds.
You should be happy that you outgrown all of them, because if you are in the lower weight division.
    I think your dead now.

  9. Jevie P. de Guzman says:

Another fighter who is aiming for money to fight Floyd. This Ward guy wanted to discredit Manny so that Floyd will fight him next. Who the hell says that Floyd;s legacy will not be hurt of ducking Manny? Only a black guy like Ward will tell that because most of these guys who still think that they are on top of the boxing world will think that way. They could not accept the fact and the reality that Floyd ducks the best fighters in his time and their primes. Amen..

  10. ANDRE WARD is nothing but a mixed NEGRO and white…He was scared to fight the best middleweight out there like Carl Froach..Golovkin coz 100% sure…WARD will going to taste what the great PACMAN taste lately…and WARD was so scared to death to taste it…PACQUIAO beat everyone that throw to him…PACQUIAO is the real Greatest Fighter Of All Time no body…no human being can matched what the great PACMAN has achieved winning unbbelievable 8TH DIVISIONs in 10 world championships…in a manner of most and greater ELECTRIFYING cation packed time the moment PACQUIAO fights…PPV makes a real sense to watch that surely everybody won that night…PACQUIAO is also the greatest and most EXPLOSIVE/ ENTERTAINER FIGHTER EVER!!! if the PAC fight…the whole world STOP!!!

    • boxing fan says:

      Scared to fight Carl Froch?

      How can that be?

      He has already beaten him.

Manny Pacquiao is just a catweight champion. Nothing more.

  11. pedro m says:

Ward is wrong to say that De la Hoya was not in his best when he fought Pacquiao as he had to come down to a weight as agreed upon by both sides.A lot of people said that De La hoya was severely disadvantaged because of that.Ward tends to forget that Pacquiao had to go up in weight two divisions above his normal fighting weight in order to fight De La Hoya, that in my opinion evened up the odds for both of them. What was clearly apparent during fight night was the difference in fighting skill between the two of them.Pacquiao proved too fast for De La Hoya both in feet and hands the reason why he kept on hitting nothing but air most of the time.De La Hoya couldin’t have been more faster if he’d been allowed to keep his normal fighting weight. You have to incorporate as well in your assessment the battle plans of both parties, how to deal with a changing situation inside the ring and seemingly DeLa Hoya’s camp simply didn’t have the answer to deal with Pacquiao’s speed.Even Nacho told Oscar that he had to stop the fight beacause Manny was simply too fast for him.Speed kills so they say and that was the difference!

  12. fool says:

    Lol,ward is just nothing

  13. true boxing fan says:

ward also needs to remember he fought chad dawson who nvr fought at 168lbs for over 6 yrs! and cotto just shred a pound but hey didnt canelo has to lose 2 pounds?! canelo cant even make 154 let alone 152/ hes a big boy hes a middleweight. so i dnt knw what ward is talking about… im not pac fan im a boxing fan and ive gotta give the credit when its due/ floyd and pacquiao are one of a kind fighters this two fighters makes weight diff like its not even a factor. but i dont knw about ward is talkin about.. pacquiaodidnt ask oscar to come down to 147 it was oscar who wants this fight bcoz floyd wont fight him for the 2nd time..so oscar picked manny bcoz of the money that they will generate. so u cant blame that to pac./ pacquiao was 130lbs and move up so fast and in a few years he fought cotto, ward aint gonna move up like that and fight stevenson or hopkins 🙂

  14. joe says:

Can you blame pacquiao fighting in a catchweight?from 112lbs to 147lbs,unbelievable!is there any boxer can do that?ward didn’t even know what he’s saying, mayweather is fighting canelo in a catchweight and even paid marquez coz he can’t make it to the contracted catchweight.and pls don’t compare that gay to a man.

  15. Boxing fan says:

    Wtf?

What’s real is pac fought guys in the higher weights without even testing it. He fought oscar ricky marga all in 1st time he test those weights.

Don’t give me a fuck about those catchweights because those are contracted in order to level the playing field.

Same goes to floyd when he’s fighting in a catchweight. Both are great fighters.

It just so happen that when both men fight guys which the other already fought it turn out that pac is the much more dominating because of his style.

That’s why fans are dying to see how floyd is gonna par against pac’s relentless style of offense. Same goes to pac also. How well canhe cope with floyd’s boxing skills.

  16. Jesse says:

Pacquiao is the most over rated fighter in the last 2 decades

  17. Boxing fan says:

@jesse you’re the most dumb boxing fan for the last 2 decades.

  18. Ricardo says:

Let’s look at some fact here so people can get a reality check.

fact 1. Pacquaio build his legacy at the higher weight class.

fact 2. Pacquiao fought most of the fighters at catchweights, DE LA HOYA, COTTO, MARGARITO (also Hatton and Mosley had fought higher, and came back down in weight)

fact 3. Pacquiao got KTFO by a guy that Floyd Mayweather Jr Clowned.

There is no doubt that Mayweather Jr has a better legacy. Ward is 100% right about Pac fans needing to be honest about some of their mans fights, because Floyd beat the guys Pac beat, and beat them more impressively……because he did it first!

    • Anonymous says:

Before pac fought cotto at 145 catchweight, cotto last fight before manny was at 146. Maybe everybody make a big deal about the 2 pounds. whatever. He came down 1 pound before his fight for manny.

    • Anonymous says:

manny killed cotto. Floyd had a tough time. even when cotto was washed up from the knock outs. smh

  19. Boxing fan says:

Lol. Hatton climb up to fight floyd. And he was knocked out.

Hatton came down to his original weight class and fought pac. He was knocked out cold.

    Same goes to other fighters.

The only thing floyd did better than pac was the marquez fight which was also contracted in a CATCHWEIGHT. And your floydie idol because he’s great did’nt go and went 2lbs over.

Don’t give me bullshit about fighter being great just because he beat the other guy mch better bec one way or the other they both have those instances.

It just so happen that pac is more willing to fight the much bigger guys instead of chickening out and picking featherweight guys.

They are both great fghters. Pac just take the much more risk when fighting guys at the higher level floyd is all about winning and keeping his 0 record. And i give him credit for being smart.

As for pac he’s all bout giving the fans a great fight.

You can say all you want but if you compare them in their fights its pac who has more action packed fights.

Floyd will be remembered as a great fighter with great boxing skills.

Pac will be remembered as great as well but with relentless offense and action packed fights.

  20. boxing fan says:

Manny Pacquiao is the biggest fraud in boxing history.

  21. Ricardo says:

Fraud mayweather is the biggest joke in the boxing world right now. Straight coward!

  22. balagtas says:

I forget to tell you Ward that Geyweather fights Hatton over in Hatton’s division whish is lightweight. Geyweather demand Hatton in welterweight not in lightweight where Hatton had no lost.

  23. petermuycs says:

This argument about who is the better fighter between Manny and Floyd and who has a better legacy can never be answered definitely unless they decide to fight with each other. All our observations, arguments, ideas, opinions are purely theoretical based on personal assumptions. There is simply no way we can quantify the extent of each fighter’s pugilistic ability by looking at their previous fights because Floyd looked more superior than Manny in some fights and Manny likewise appeared more superior than Floyd in other fights against common adversaries.Even the so called boxing experts have contrasting opinions when it comes to comparing the two fighters. To settle this seemingly interminable disputes and ever growing diverse opinions…..LET THEM FIGHT…..to actually see who is the better fighter.Until then all our diverse opinions will continue to remain just an opinion. You maybe right and I maybe wrong but then…you maybe also be wrong and I maybe right…Right?

    • JoeCurly says:

Let them fight, ‘but Mayweather seems to avoid PacMan, ‘then this avoidance alone contradicts whatever he had accomplished. So this means in real fighter’s hearts/minds, that Floyd is sub-par as compared to Pac. UNTIL he mans up and show us otherwise. Sorry, ‘this is how cruel life is, ‘no matter how I would love to side with Floydie, ‘until then…

  24. Walter says:

I have enjoyed all fights of Mannys fighht win or loss while Floyds all winning fights makes me feel disgusted especially on Ortiz fight i think i will just spend my hard earned pay per view money on Manny Pacquaio.

  25. heart says:

    Look whos talking?

    Say hello to Chad Dawson…

  26. robert ko boxing brown says:

now for some sensible discussion there is only one fighter in the world that can compete with Floyd interns of all round boxing ability and I.Q that is Andre ward his defence speed and accuracy as well as his ring i.Q are similar to Floyd but they are in different weights, at his weight Floyd is on his own, opponents throw double the punches land half as much, against the ghost Floyd landed over 60 percent of his power shots Floyd is the best and will prove it again by an easy win over Canelo, but Ward is the closest to him skill wise.

    • JoeCurly says:

Robert KO boxing brown: it doesn’t mean sensible jz bcoz u said it. Now, here is the real sensible argument: Floyd avoids PacMan, thus all achievements of Floydie watever it is is automatically null & void. Because the single fighter who can give him fits, he avoids! Fact of the matter. Floyd is subpar, this is the one idea that makes sense. It doesn’t take a genius to understand or appreciate it.
      Peace bro!

      • Anonymous says:

Actually History can tells about the Floyd’s ducking mannerism

Is that Manny’s fault he just accepted the challenge. so what are you Gayweather fans are crying now?

lets wait for a year maybe Floyd is ready to fight Pacquiao waiting to make sure that Pacquiao is already washed up.

    • eanalo says:

Yep, no doubt Mayweather has exceptional ring IQ however his legacy has also been carefully managed with his choice of opponents. Everyone throws around that his ring skills & IQ is second to none but I doubt he could hold a candle to some of the fighters from the 80’s where the welterweight division was deep with talent, fights were regularly fought and boxers were exposed to a wide array of styles.

Getting the benefit of being marketable, the spotlight highlights his unblemished record yet overlooks his questionable choice of opponents or timing for that matter. More importantly, it puts him in a position where he can dictate who and when to fight. Presently, there is no fighter that can match him, however Pacquiao is the closest that can take him out of his comfort zone and make him look vulnerable. Whether Pacquiao can beat him, that’s probably something we’ll never find out. But unless Mayweather moves up in weight, he’ll be sitting comfortable on top as there is no fighter within WW that can match him athletically or IQ.

Regarding your logic that Mayweather will beat Pacquiao because he easily disposed Marquez is flawed. Styles make fights, just look at Ali > Foreman > Frazier > Ali. If Spafadora could give him fits, what more could Pacquiao? Just saying…

Pac does not move his head after throwing jabs falls in after throwing left hands, hence how Marquez knocked him out, by the way how did marquez do against Floyd again, Manny is vulnerable to uppercuts up the middle and straight right hands Floyd’s best punch, Floyd is not scared of pac because pac has nothing to worry him pac can’t cut off the ring either, pac would be chasing Floyd all night and Floyd will just pot shot and counter, want the fight ask bob

Maybe you are talking about the current Pacquiao, but the former Pacquiao can chase Floyd and Knock him Sailva dripping in the ring.

I’m tired of hearing wannabe experts or experts whom trying to 2nd guess skills of fighters. It’s up to d fighters to challenge/show their wares, period. This is true litmus test. Floyd went AFA admitting to national tv declaring he is “protecting his health…”, this is the sad reality. Your idol Floyd inas much as amassing those wins. ‘Has no heart to go against a real warrior.

Fact of the matter. Until Floyd mans up, ‘hecan’t be protected by your wannabe expert analysis.
All of us true warriors know they don’t mean a thing. 😉

Obviously somebody from Asia who suddenly becomes the GOAT will be hard to stomach to people out there. Imagine a natural 135 – 140 lb boxer bulldozing natural 147 – 155 lb. boxers! You people out there were not listening to your math teacher! Manny Pacquiao is “8” weight division champion!

MAyweather is A great fighter.. fights like A chicken.. and takes advantage on breaks.. look at the ortiz Fight.. come on! I know its protect yourself at all times but, what he did is not an Act of A trur warrior. I never even saw mayweather go toe to toe.. in the guerrero fight he Ran like A chicken!..

andre ward is one of my favorite boxer. but shame to him for what he says about Manny Pacquiao’s legacy. and to all of you guys who watch a sport of boxing. always remember that, everytime a fighter enters the ring they have a lot of time to prepare and conditioning before the fight happened, and they all agree to its other before the fight. so i think there is no reason or excuses for anybodies career if they have lost a fight. and that is a fighters fault if they were lost.

    • Anonymous says:

and add to that, they offered to come down on weight not Manny ask them to come down on weight. so Andre ward go fuck yourself or better have a bromance with Mayweather.

yes a boxer have 3 months grace period to back out or agree to fight and the organizer or promoter have the mandatory replacement just to continue the slated fights. to be fair on the cost incurred during the promotional period…. We love boxing becuase everybody like exciting fights no one can predicts the losser boxer until the referee declared it… whoever losses his fight would not say anything against the winner what matter most is moved on and trained yourself then push it to the limit that the any other boxer is not used to it. – MPacquiao, FMayweather, JMMarQuez ,ACanelo,TBradley must fight each other to crown them who will be going to the Podium…

  33. m16 says:

Mayweather will never be as great as Pacquiao because he’s a coward businessman and many years from now he will die regreting he never fought Pacquiao and other top fighters. Pacquiao’s legacy as a warrior who fell and rose is what makes a legend not a perfpect 0 filled with cowardness.

  34. BahoPuwet says:

Cotto was only 1 pound less than his previous fight (i believe vs. Clottey) when he fought Pacquiao. Not only that, Cotto outweighed Manny by at least 10 pounds on fight night.
Margarito was 18 pounds plus heavier than Pacquiao on fight night.
i love Andre Ward but he is biased. He’s siding with the guy with the same color as his.

  35. paintmyluv says:

mayweather fought a lot of HOFer who are no longer in their prime such as dela hoya (beaten many times already by mosley & trinidad), miguel cotto (lost already to margarito & pacquiao, he ducked cotto when the latter was still an undefeated fighter), shane mosley (lost to vernon forrest, wright & cotto before mayweather fought him), carlos baldomir, zab judah (lost already to tszyu, spinks & baldomir before mayweather), arturo gatti (lost already to manfredy, ivan robinson twice, dela hoya & micky ward prior to mayweather), jose luis castillo (4 losses already b4 d fight).

mayweather also fought a much smaller hatton, marquez, and won a questionable fight with ortiz.

More illustrious boxers in the past did not cherry pick their opponents. They make it a point to make a fight with their contenders not make a list of unreachable demands and scenarios which mayweather & other current top dogs usually do.

  36. paintmyluv says:

ward has the potential to be great but he seldom fights so for me he is irrelevant as a boxer and as a showman in the ring. most of press releases on ward are about his views on certain fights he was not involved with, i think he could be best as a ESPN, HBO or Showtime commentator/announcer.

Pacquiao did a better job on DLH, hatton, cotto and Mosley then floyd and also beat marquez at lightweight, plus two wins over Barrera and morales

  42. jimcash says:

Mayweather is a legend in his own mind. Pacquiao is an icon, a sensation in boxing!
