Bob Sheridan: “I would lean towards Gennady Golovkin until I see him get knocked off”

Bob Sheridan is one of the best commentators in the sport of boxing and he is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. “The Colonel” has been calling fights for over 40 years and has made some of the sport’s most famous ringside calls.

I recently spoke with Bob and discussed some of the biggest stories going on in boxing. Sheridan shared his thoughts on the rumored upcoming fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. Sheridan also breaks down this weekends Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez fight, sharing his official prediction. Here is what Bob Sheridan had to say.

Robert Brown: Tyson Fury is going to face off with Deontay Wilder. Why do you think Tyson is willing to take this risk?

Bob Sheridan: I’ve talked to Tyson Fury and it’s all or nothing with him. He upset one of the great champions of all time with his awkward style and pure size. If he’s physically healthy and conditioned enough that he can get in there with Wilder, anything can happen.

Wilder is an undefeated fighter who stayed busy and fought everyone that will come his way. It’s hard to say that Tyson Fury could beat him but who would have dreamed that Tyson Fury could do what he did when he upset Klitschko?

You just got to wonder where Fury is in his head and in his preparations. He’s a bit of a wild man and he’s the one who really made the heavyweight division after upsetting Klitschko, so who knows what could happen. With Fury, anything could happen because he’s so awkward and so tough.

Robert Brown: If Fury beats Wilder, then Joshua is basically forced to fight him, and that would be two huge money fights in a row for Tyson.

Bob Sheridan: That fight should be in England because Wilder and Fury would fill up Wembley stadium for that fight. The fight should be over there and I’m sure that Wilder is not concerned in his own mind that he could beat this guy because the guy is not a great technical fighter, as we all know but he is a very tough and awkward guy.

I think Wilder can handle that, but if Fury wins the fight, can you imagine the payday for him and Anthony Joshua in England? It would be a huge fight. It would be a regional type fight even though it has world ramification. The money and the interest in England would be massive, especially following a victory over Wilder.

Robert Brown: What are your thoughts on the rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez? How much pressure is Canelo under to at least perform as good as he did in the first fight following the failed drug test?

Bob Sheridan: Well, I think the drug issue is yesterdays news now, it’s too bad that the fight had to be postponed because both of them could have had other fights that would have been big. Right now, this is a massive fight. ‘GGG’ is getting up there in age a little bit and has had some difficult fights along the way, and Alvarez is younger and is a big guy, so we’ll see what happens in this fight.

Of course there’s all the controversy of the scoring of the last fight. I don’t think it would have made any difference because I think eventually the panel of judges got the score right, in spite of the way Adalaide Byrd had it scored. We’ll see what happens, it’s going to be a tremendous fight.

It’s another one of those fights where you got to see where Golovkin is in his career, is he approaching the end? Alvarez is a superstar, the Mexicans will be up here in Las Vegas and it’s going to be a great promotion. I think you have to wait to see what happens. The first fight was a terrific fight and I expect this one will be too.

Robert Brown: Who would you favor in this fight?

Bob Sheridan: I would lean towards Golovkin until I see him get knocked off.

  1. Sheridan is being too political here. Wilder is a coward. Fury is damaged goods. Alvarez will get his behind kicked again bigger than the first time. The corruption in the fight game caused this rematch ans Sheridan doesnt own up to it.
