The growing thought among boxing fans is that the only way we will see a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is if Pacquiao himself decides to leave his long time promoter Bob Arum, as Mayweather who was once promoted by Top Rank still harbors bad feelings about his past working relationship with Arum’s promotional company. This feeling is also shared by the lawyer of Pacquiao, Franklin Gacal, who has suggested that Arum should step aside to make what could be the richest fight in boxing history. Pacquiao recently agreed to fight Timothy Bradley in a rematch, but unlike his opponent, Pacquiao did not choose to sign an extension with Top Rank, which could see him become a promotional free agent by the end of the year.
In the third and final part in my exclusive interview with trainer, Floyd Joy Mayweather Sr, I get his thoughts on the news that Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, has been named Trainer of the Year by the boxing writers association for the 6th time, and why he thinks Roach won the award again.
I also get Mayweather’s views on the promotional situation of Pacquiao and if he thinks a move away from Bob Arum might lead to a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout. In closing, Senior talks about 2014 and what fans can expect from him this new year. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to say.
Jenna J: The fans of our show named you trainer of the year for 2013, but the boxing writers association named Freddie Roach the trainer of the year for the 6th time. What do you think about that?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: It ain’t nothing but a bunch of bullshit! Everybody knows that. Everybody knows Freddie can’t out train me by no means, and how does this guy win it and his fighter got knocked damn cold. Pacquiao got knocked out frozen cold. How in the world are you gonna say he gets trainer of the year again?
As good as my son fought with me. Hey, the war will go to me anyway, I don’t care anyways. I’m gonna tell you right here, they’re giving him the award because they’re feeling sorry for him. They’re feeling sorry for him, that’s why they’re giving him the award. They ain’t giving him the award for nothing else, it’s only because the people’s sorrow they’re feeling for Freddie Roach.
That’s why they are doing what they are doing. It don’t make no difference anyways because people are looking at that and people don’t even know what these accolades are for, all we know is that Freddie is getting them, that’s all we know. None of that stuff is fair, it don’t make no difference. Freddie Roach lost a few other fights, how in the world….well it is what it is.
Jenna: If you could talk to Manny Pacquiao and give him any sort of advise for what’s left of his career–some people say he should leave Bob Arum–what kind of advise would you give to Pacquiao?
Mayweather Sr: Well, I’m gonna tell you this right here; Oscar De La Hoya left Bob Arum, my son left Bob Arum, these were the biggest fighters in the world at the time they left Bob Arum, and they are some of the biggest fighters still today. I think if Pacquiao had any sense, I think he would jump on the same wagon and get rolling. Don’t get me wrong, by no means necessary, I don’t have no problems with Bob Arum.
Bob Arum has been good to me at times when my son was working with him, but it is what it is. Even though he was nice to me, he was taking from my son, so I can’t agree with that either. It is what it is and like I said, I’m not gonna hold nobody up that’s doing anything wrong to any family member or friend of mine, I’m not gonna go along with it.
Jenna: If Manny Pacquiao left Bob Arum, do you think that would make the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight?
Mayweather Sr: Well it ain’t that. Floyd is not fighting Pacquiao right now cause right now Pacquiao needs money and Floyd has offered him 60-40 split and Pacquiao said no, he’s talking about 50-50. How in the hell is he gonna call the damn shots? He ain’t the damn king, he ain’t the king, he can’t call no shots.
Floyd is calling the shots, it’s simple, and that way right there everything will be taken care off. With little Floyd being the king of everything, Pacquiao is gonna take that test and then Pacquiao is gonna have to settle for what Floyd wants him to have, simple.
Pacquiao, I think he should take that fight with my son and delete Bob Arum out of the situation and go for what he can go for, do the best he can do because right now he ain’t doing very good.
Jenna: In closing Floyd, what can the fans expect from Floyd Joy Mayweather Sr. in the new year?
Mayweather Sr: Oh you can always look for big things coming from me because I’m the kind of guy that makes things happen. You all can look at “The Knockout” the reality show and shortly after that, the next month following, you will be seeing “The Mayweather’s House” that is a reality show.
It’s gonna be a pretty good outstanding year for me, I’m just saying because things are going very, very good. As a matter of fact, things are going good for me for quite a while. Only thing I can tell you is that things have gotten much better.
