Floyd Mayweather Sr: “If Gennady Golovkin was anywhere near little Floyd’s weight, Floyd would beat the hell out of him!”

The one question fans have asked the most since Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired is, “Will he come back?” It has now been over six months since Mayweather’s last fight and so far the retirement has stuck. Recently Floyd has been making headlines for his comments about Gennady Golovkin, saying that if he had continued to fight, he believes he could have defeated Golovkin. Some people in the sport feel this is Mayweather’s way of leaving the door open to a return, while others believe it is Floyd’s way of trying to stay in the spotlight without getting into the ring.

In part 2 of my interview with trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr, I get his thoughts on the chances that we will see his son enter the ring once again and get his views on why Floyd Jr. is talking about Golovkin in the press. Senior also shares his thoughts on his son fighting a middleweight and gives his views on ‘GGG’ as a fighter. Additionally, Mayweather talks about Pacquiao’s return against Timothy Bradley and what he thinks of Teddy Atlas. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr had to say.

Jenna J: Why do you think your son has been talking about middleweight champ, Gennady Golovkin as of late?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: He ain’t gonna fight no Golovkin, I can pretty much tell you that. He’s not gonna fight no guy that damn big. If he did do something like that, he wouldn’t be a wise man and he would be a fool if he did it. Not to even say that he can’t whoop Golovkin, I’m just telling you the ins and outs about it. I think more than likely the fight won’t happen.

Jenna J: As a trainer, when you look at Golovkin, how would you go about beating him?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Don’t get me wrong, he can be beaten. Golovkin can probably take Floyd’s shots better than Floyd can take his shots, but other than that, Golovkin is not a good fighter at all, I don’t care what nobody says. Golovkin is just a target, that’s all he is.

I’m just saying that if it was a big Floyd against Golovkin and Floyd fought like he does now and does the things that he does now, there would be no contest, it wouldn’t even be a fight that got thought about. Right now everybody wants him to fight somebody like Golovkin, get the hell out of here. Nobody is going to fight nobody that damn big, Floyd ain’t no big man.

Golovkin probably has Floyd by I don’t even know how many damn pounds. Golovkin knows it himself, if he was anywhere near Floyd’s weight, Floyd would beat the hell out of him. Right now Golovkin is a punching bag, all you have to do is take Golovkin and hang him up on chains and go to work. That’s what we would do to a guy like him.

Jenna J: Manny Pacquiao is coming back after his shoulder surgery.

Floyd Mayweather Sr: That’s the biggest joke I heard in boxing.

Jenna J: He’s coming back and he’s taking on Timothy Bradley for a third time, what do you think of that?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Yeah well all he’s doing is fighting all the same guys over again. The only way he fights Floyd over again is to get a payday, other than that there’s no reason for him to fight Floyd. He won’t even try to fight Floyd to get the loss back that he had, he won’t fight Floyd to try to get that. He may do it for some money though, that’s a different story.

Jenna J: Timothy Bradley has Teddy Atlas in his corner, do you see that making any difference in this fight?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I haven’t been around Teddy Atlas that much, but one thing I do know is that Teddy Atlas was under Cus D’Amato for a long time. The fight is an up and up fight because I can’t say nothing about him and Cus D’Amato, even though I wasn’t even into all that Cus D’Amato stuff when that stuff was going on. I was young and I remember looking at all that stuff and looking at the boys, but myself, I like prime boxing.

I like boxing with skills, knowledge, speed, hooking off the jab, up jabs, going to the body and coming back to the head with triple hooks. These are the things I like doing. All the stuff with, “hook, right hand. Jab jab. One two,” all that stuff is crazy. You gotta be able to mix things up. All this stuff about coming in with no defense — I’m gonna be honest with you, my grand babies know as much as they do about boxing, for real.

Ggg has yet to face an Elite fighter

    • GARY SCHNEIDER says:

GGG has fought many elite fighters……Marin Murray, David Lemieux, and Curtis Stevens would all probably have beaten Canelo or at the very least given him his toughest fight ever…There is a boxer named Darnel boon who almost beat Kovalev lost a very close split decision….knocked out Adonis Stevenson….knocked down Andre Ward the only pro to do it…..and Stevens beat Boon fairly easily….Stevens can fight…..and GGG gave Stevens a beat down…..

mayweather has no balls like pacquiao had, he’s afraid of big man, he is very genius and cautious and it made him undefeated. pacquiao is contrary to floyd he fought even bigger. in fact paquiao size versus mayweather size is equal to mayweather size versus GGG size. pacquiao is no big man but not afraid of risk

maybe this time sr will do the drug test

It’s just a matter of time when all these cheaters will be expose. It took many years before they caught Lance Armstrong so be patient my fellow boxing fans.

  13. esmael jalil says:

Well your boy fought for money too. He won’t get that 300M payday if he fought someone else like Berto or Guerero. He won’t give Pacman a rematch because this time his ass will be wipe out..

  14. Joe Keeney says:

May weather is a talented fighter, put him the era of the 80’s champs he’d be a contender with numerous “L”s on his record. So much talent the. Than actually fought. The Leonard’s, Hearns, Durans, Benitez, and the Haglers of the world. He’d have a hard with Pryor and Arguello. He’d fit in with the Donald Curry of the divisions. These champs took risks and jump weight classes with no catch weights to win titles. May weather is TBE, they best evader of those he may lose to. The golden era said lace up and let’s fight.

  15. Joe Keeney says:

Mayweather is a talented fighter, but if he was in the gold nature fighting in the 1980s he would just be a contender. There were true warriors that fought back in that error. The likes of sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Durand, Tommy Hearns, Aaron Pryor, Alexis Arguello, marvelous Marvin Hagler, and I believe Mayweather would’ve been like Donald Curry during that era. It would’ve been tough for him to beat the Mark Brelands, Marlon Starlonings, and Wilfredo Benitez. Like how well his father did in that era. May weather is TBE, the best evader of prime big attractions.
