Floyd Mayweather Sr: “Manny Pacquiao wants to do it again, and guess what? Pacquiao can get it again!”

Floyd Mayweather Sr. is one of the most well known and out spoken trainers in the sport. He has taken several boxers to world titles, but is mostly know for his work with his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Senior has been the primary trainer of his son since 2013 and he has seen his son not only remain undefeated, but has seen his son have some of his biggest career wins.

In part 1 of my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Floyd Mayweather Sr, I discuss with him his current stable of fights and get his thoughts on how to deal with a fighter that does not listen to his trainer. Senior also talks about his son’s early career and how Mayweather Jr’s dealt with early defeats. Additionally, Floyd talks about his son possibly making a comeback and if he sees a rematch with Manny Pacquiao as an event to possibly come back for. Here is what Floyd Mayweather had to say.

Jenna J: Can you give the fans an update on some of the fighters you’ve been working with?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Right now I got a nine year old boy I’m training. So far I’ve had four fights with him and he won all of them with me. He went to Kansas City to some tournament down there and they say he lost to a real tall guy. A loss is a loss and a win is a win, so we chalked that one up, but when he’s been with me, I’ve had no problems with him. He’s whooped everybody real easy.

I got my cruiserweight, Andrew ‘The Beast’ Tabiti, he’s probably going to be going for the title real soon. I got Mickey Bey, he hasn’t really come to the gym, so I can’t really tell you what he’s gonna do, but I think he’s gonna be fighting pretty soon. Tabiti will be fighting the 30th of April. I got one other kid who lost with me, but he don’t listen and when you don’t listen, you don’t get no results. He wants to tell everybody something more than somebodies telling him something. Ladarius ‘Memphis’ Miller is the one, that’s the character right there, and when I say character I mean a real cartoon.

Jenna J: When you have a young guy like ‘Memphis’ who doesn’t listen to you, how do you deal with it?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: The only way you can do anything with anybody, if a guy is not listening to you, you have to do something. What I do when they don’t listen to me, you don’t have to worry about seeing me no more because if you were listening, more than likely you would have won. You could have lost too, but it’s the way you lose too.

You can put up a good fight and lose a good fight but if the fight looks good, we may do that again. A guy that steps in and you’re telling him what to do and he’s just laying there on the ropes, that’s a no no with me. The way the dust comes to me, I’m gonna fan it back.

Jenna J: How did Floyd Jr. deal with losses in the amateurs?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Little Floyd didn’t lose that many fights. He had about one hundred and four fights and he only lost about four or five of them. To be honest with you, out of all those fights, I was with him twice where they took the fight and he lost because of it, and he thoroughly beat the guy. Another fight was a fight when he fought in the Olympics and you saw that fight and you know he won.

Floyd’s got a few losses, we all get losses. You have to get losses to get some wins, that’s just the way it is. You gotta go out there and test the water, if you don’t test the water you will never know, and if you don’t know, you can’t go.

Jenna J: It’s been a while since your son has been in the ring. Do you think he’s done with boxing now that he’s been out for this long?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I can’t really say what he’s going to do because I’m not him. The thing of it is, they keep talking about Pacquiao wanting to fight, and Danny Garcia might want to fight Floyd. Pacquiao wants to do it again, for what does he want to do it? No one knows. The only thing good there is Floyd’s gonna whoop his ass where he can get enough money to go about his business and sit his ass down somewhere. That’s a real simple fight for Floyd. It’s been a long time coming and it came, and when it came, Pacquiao got it. And guess what? Pacquiao can get it again.
