Freddie Roach: “We have to break Floyd Mayweather down first and I think in the later rounds, I believe Manny Pacquiao will knock him out!”

The names Mayweather and Pacquiao have been tied together in regards to a fight for over 6 years, and now that the bout is finally set and all the talk about the fight coming together is over, the fight itself faces it’s toughest task, and that is living up to all the hype. The fight will break every monetary record in the sports history, but to most fans the only thing that matters is the kind of fight both fighers can produce after all this time.

In the third and final part of my interview with Freddie Roach, I discuss with him the future of his other champion Miguel Cotto and his views on Pacquiao’s relationship with Cotto. I also talked to Roach about the strengths of both Mayweather and Pacquiao going into the bout. Additionally I get Freddie’s view on who the greater of the two fighters is and his official prediction for May 2nd. Here is what Freddie Roach had to say.

Jenna J: One other fighter I want to ask you about is Miguel Cotto, you trained him to a middleweight title last year. His career has been up in the air, he signed with Roc Nation. Do you have any insight to what his future is looking like?

Freddie Roach: I talked to Miguel last night and they’re gonna be in town next week. We’re gonna go over the opponents possibly for his next fight. They do have two dates for him coming up, so he told me.

I’m looking forward to working with him and I did ask him about Mayweather a little bit. I asked, “What was the most difficult thing to deal with when you fought Mayweather?” He said that maybe it was his foot speed and I relayed that to Manny. We’re all on the same team, I train both guys and they support each other very well, even though there’s a little bit of friction because they did fight each other.

We don’t live in a perfect world, nobody forgives everybody all the way, so I’m sure there’s some tension there because they have fought before and one guy won and one guy lost. Miguel is a great guy, he said, “You will win the fight because you have Freddie Roach.” He knows how I come up with gameplans, he knows that my gameplan against him is going to be really good and Manny’s gonna follow the directions and I feel we’re gonna have a great night.

I feel very motivated and after Pacquiao’s fight I probably won’t get a break, I’ll probably go right to camp with Miguel and I can’t wait to get back to work with Miguel because he is a dedicated guy. I love guys that work hard, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto are two of the best workers I’ve ever had in my life.

Jenna J: When we talk about this fight, what do you think the biggest strengths Manny Pacquiao has going into it?

Freddie Roach: His legs are his biggest strength because I feel like he can move a lot better than Floyd can. I think Mayweather’s gonna have trouble with the side to side movement. I love being in this fight, I know we’re in a must win situation but the thing is, I’m very confident that we’re gonna win this fight.

Jenna J: What are Floyd Mayweather’s biggest strengths that he brings into the ring?

Freddie Roach: Mayweather is very fast. His favorite punch is the jab to the body, I think the punch is a little bit too long, I know how to beat that punch if he does it. He might get knocked out right there. He reaches a lot with his punches and he’s always pulling away as he’s throwing a punch forward.

I know he’s undefeated and a good fighter but if you look at his record, he picked and chose his opponents. There are no real big, big names on his resume, I don’t think he’s a great fighter, I think Pacquiao’s the better fighter.

Jenna J: Is there a rematch clause if Manny Pacquiao beats Floyd?

Freddie Roach: There’s no rematch clause but this fight’s so big that I think if it goes like I think it will and they both start early and they both go for the knockout early because Floyd’s legs are nearly gone. I know he’s gonna start quick and we’re gonna start quick also. I think the fans will demand a rematch, and I would love a rematch because I like making money, so it’s pretty good.

Jenna J: In closing, what is your official prediction for May 2nd?

Freddie Roach: I think Manny will win by knockout. I don’t have a round but the thing is, we have to break him down first and I think in the later rounds, I believe Manny will knock him out.

Jenna J: Alright Freddie, thanks so much for your time. I wish you all the best luck on May 2nd.

Mayweather has fought fast, quick fighters but not explosive fighters. Paq explodes to the punch and to the spots. I dont think money will engage with paq.

  2. Mykeythefish says:

Mannys going to make Mayweather shine his balls after May 2nd.

  3. ed says:

Pacman is absolutely the better fighter than Fraud.. Fraud is better boxer.. i don’t have to explain the difference.. Why is Pac better?
    – only 8 division titlist
    – better opposition and how he wins fights – being aggressor (all time greats are) and by destroying opponents.. Pacman is fighting at his highest weight class possible and yet these biggers guys are afraid to engage, they just want to survive.. those who stood in front or attacked him got destroyed.. Now do you see Fraud fightight at jr. or even middleweight and his opponents are afraid of to engage??
-common opponents; let’s not discuss the four coz we know what happened there. on to Marquez, Fraud cheated on the scales, had Marquez move up two weight divisions and still played defense most of the time..!! Marquez is smaller and a natural counter puncher !! see the difference !!

*even if the Fraud wins come May 2, Pacman’s legacy is intact.. now this is not an excuse coz i truly believe Fraud avoided Pac for 5 yrs.. if flomos still can’t see that due to all the alibis/excuses, then they’re just blind followerss.. Go Pacman.. Best of this Era!! Watch both there fights from 10 years ago to present..

The world will be rejoiced to see the real great boxer win on May 2, 2015 and it is pacquiao. Pacquiao, the humble and religious man will surely shine on that date. The Lord God will be glorified through his servant, Manny Pacquiao.

  5. ed says:

Pacman – Fighter of the Decade ! and has more FOY awards than Fraud..

  6. laro says:

Mayweather, the lousy fighter will be humbled on May 2nd, he will fall, shattered and be given lesson by the Lord God for his boastfulness and lack of respect to women..

  7. laro says:

Floyd as of now lacks sleeps caused he know of his coming defeat. The Lord God will surely deliver him to Manny Pacquiao’s hand.

  8. anon says:

Floyd is the better is a boxer he boxes to win off of points. Manny is the fighter he fights to entertain the fans and the sports he knocks his opponents down or out. Floyd fights for himself not the growth and progression of boxing , look Manny took less money and agreed to Floyds demands just to make fans happy.

  9. marie says:

Maybe, this is just mind games. He knows how good a fighter Mayweather is and he says all these things because he’s a little worried for the fight. Sometimes he doesn’t say the whole truth. It’s just the way Freddie is. I hope he doesn’t give out the strategies cuz he talks a lot. Team Mayweather is wiser than Team Pacquiao is and they will be on the “watch out” while team Pacquiao couldn’t even remember to feed their master.

  10. Roach is one of the greatest coaches in this generation and if Manny follows all his instructions and advice, I believe that Floyd will be knocked out as predicted.

  11. I believe Freddie Roach’s prediction on the knockout being awarded multiple times as a Trainer.

  12. marie says:

Mayweather will not just exploit Manny’s weaknesses and mistakes, but he EMPHASIZED that HE WILL TAKE AWAY MANNY’S STRENGTH. Because even with Manny’s many mistakes, he is still “successful”. So he plans to take away Manny’s strengths. Very wise, indeed, thanks to his 3 trainers/strategists.

  13. marie says:

“Do not count the eggs before they are hatched” is always a good reminder. “Do not be TOO OVERCONFIDENT; defense; and accept one’s loss with grace” are Mommy D’s gentle reminders.

It’s still a month away to check and correct one’s mistakes and frame of mind. BE HUMBLE, acknowledge your opponent’s skills and abilities and do not see yourself as better than he is and, ultimately, rely on God’s power to win you the fight.

  14. glen says:

It’s a toes coin. Floyd have not fought someone like Manny and Manny has not fought someone like Floyd. People should just wait till the fight is over and see who is the real better fighter.

  15. barry gil r. pilar says:

Remember folks Flomo Jr. has ducked Pacman for 5 long years just waiting for the latter to slow down. By taking this fight Flomo Jr. has thought that Pacman wasnt the same fighter anymore. This has been a grave mistake! The PEDS accusation of Floyd’s Camp was an absolute joke because they were unable to present evidences regarding this claim and when Pacquiao’s lawyer were determined to expose Floyd’s PEDS use which were documented, they decided to settle matters outside of court for 6 million dollars. On May 2nd the world will see how great Manny is! he recently stated, ” I was never afraid of Mayweather, I will fight him even without gloves!” Just three more weeks and Pacman will be ready to kill anyone who crosses his path!

  16. tikboy says:

floyd will get fucked up big time. there is a reason he came up with all those bullshit excuses the past five years.

then the world will finally see how overrated floyd was.
