Glenn McCrory: “Taking the fight with Crawford would have sent Manny Pacquiao straight back into retirement!”

The boxing world was surprised when it was announced that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook was going to move up two weight classes to face world recognized middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin. While few in the boxing circles give Brook a chance, Sky announcer, Glenn McCrory, sees the fight differently.

In part 2 of my interview with Glenn McCrory, I discuss with him Kell Brook’s upcoming fight against Gennady Golovkin and the chances he sees of Brook winning. McCrory also talks about Brook one upping Amir Khan and if he sees that fight ever taking place. Additionally. Glenn shares his thoughts on Pacquiao-Vargas and what he thinks of Manny Pacquiao continuing to box. Here is what Glenn McCrory had to say.

Robert Brown: What are your thoughts on Kell Brook going up to fight Gennady Golovkin? Do you give Kell Brook a chance?

Glenn McCrory: Yeah I definitely give Kell Brook a chance. I think when Amir Khan vs. Canelo was announced, I thought the fight was a silly fight and I didn’t give Khan a chance. It’s definitely a tough opportunity for Kell Brook, but Kell Brook is undefeated in thirty six fights, they have two of the longest stretches of undefeated records.

Kell’s a very big welterweight and Golovkin is not particularly a big middleweight, so I think that’s going to make a difference. Also the fact that we don’t know how good Kell can really be, he hasn’t been tested. There’s a reputation about Golovkin, where yes he’s good, yes he hits hard, but we still haven’t seen him tested against any big names.

I think it’s an excellent fight, at this minute I’m leaning towards ‘GGG’ but it’s a fight I definitely think Kell Brook can win and I’m just waiting to see that. I just want to see the buildup to see what sort of temperament Kell Brook comes in with, because if he comes into the fight thinking he can win, there’s a great chance he can.

Robert Brown: Do you think Brook taking the fight with Golovkin is his way of sticking it to Amir Khan who refused to fight him?

Glenn McCrory: I think it might be. In some respects where he’s putting it to Amir Khan in the fact that he’s got the fight with Golovkin, where Amir Khan has pretty much dismissed Kell Brook as not worthy an opponent, but yet he’s worthy an opponent for Golovkin. I think that’s saying, “Ok, you’re trying to say I’m not a big enough name and draw to fight you, yet ‘GGG’ thinks I’m a big enough draw.” That’s putting his argument for not fighting Kell look silly.

It’s a natural fight between Kell Brook and Amir Khan, but they haven’t done it. We’re going to have to wait for Alvarez and Golovkin for a while longer, hopefully that will happen, but I know if Kell Brook manages to pull of a victory against Golovkin, what will Amir Khan look like? Amir will be looking rather silly.

Robert Brown: Manny Pacquiao is going to be fighting Jessie Vargas, what are your thoughts on the fight?

Glenn McCrory: I was quite happy when Pacquiao announced his retirement because he’s had a wonderful career, he’s done exceptionally well, he’s one of the greats. Obviously this fight is a fight to get him back and get him winning and to set up a bigger fight. He’s still probably got something to offer and it’s a fight he can win, but I for one, would have preferred to see Pacquiao just stay in retirement and get on with his politics.

Robert Brown: Why do you think Pacquiao and Bob Arum have chosen not to go with Terence Crawford?

Glenn McCrory: I think taking the fight with Terence Crawford would have sent him straight back into retirement. This way he has a good chance of winning, and maybe he needs one more before they put him in with somebody as good as Crawford. I think it’s a smart option to get him a warm up fight. But you never know with Pacquiao at this stage of his career. Even the likes of Vargas who is a solid enough professional might give Pacquiao trouble.

Robert Brown: Is it also possible that they are hoping to get Pacquiao another fight with Floyd Mayweather?

Glenn McCrory: Having seen the last Mayweather fight with Pacquiao, where Pacquiao was widely outboxed and widely beaten, I think there was a general feeling of being left down in that fight. All the promise that the fight showed and it didn’t live up to that. I for one would not relish a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

  2. Enrique says:

THIS MCCRORY IS REAL HATER. HE IS SO WRONG. CRAWFORD IS NO MATCH WITH PACMAN. MARK MY WORD. ALL PACMAN HATER ARE JEALOUS.

    • RobRyan says:

We are not jealous, we are being truthful when we say that Crawford is too much for Pacquiao. There is a style that can beat PAC, and Crawford has it. PAC is taking a fight with Vargas, and that is a wise move.

      • Arnold Reynolds says:

The truth is, Crawford is boring and won’t sell much PPV’s. Vargas fight will be a war and that’s what fans want to see.

      • Cid says:

That is an overstatement. Crawford too much for Pacquiao is a joke. He has not yet proven himself if he can bang against the elite. What I know is, when Crawford is hit with a hard punch he starts to run for his dear life.

  3. Cris says:

Crawford fighting Pacquiao will still be a great fight.

  4. Glen says:

Talking shit is not going get Pacquiao fight Crawford. Step back and follow the golden rule. There are fights out there above 140 lbs that are still attractive. You do not dictate terms. Pacquiao do.

  5. GavinOsborne says:

McCrory is a shit head. He is as dumb as his boxing skills.

  6. Joven says:

The fight between pacman and vargas is not yet final. i just hope team pacquiao decides to fight crawford and shut the f:ck on mccrory’s mouth. and when this happens, i challenge this biatch to retire as sky announcer.

  7. Objectivity says:

Just, wow. Amazing that ppl are still sore at Pac’s defeat to MW…as if it happened just yesterday.
