Jeff Mayweather: “I don’t think that Teddy Atlas or anyone else can help Bradley win against Manny Pacquiao”

The last big boxing announcement of 2015 was expected to come from Manny Pacquiao in regards to who was going to be the final opponent of his boxing career, a fight that is set to take place April 9th. While many believe that choice has already been made and a third fight with Timothy Bradley is next, an official announcement won’t be made until early next year.

In this interview with trainer and former IBO champion Jeff Mayweather, I get his views on a likely Pacquiao-Bradley III bout and if he thinks the addition of Teddy Altas gives Bradley a better chance to win. ‘Jazzy’ Jeff also talks about people hyping Timothy Bradley after the Brandon Rios victory and predicts who wins a third Pacquiao vs. Bradley match. Additionally, Mayweather talks about what differences a trainer can make in a fighter and speaks about his YouTube channel. Here is what Jeff Mayweather had to say.

Robert Brown: If Timothy Bradley gets a third shot at Manny Pacquiao, how do you think Tim does? Can Teddy Atlas make much of a difference in this fight?

Jeff Mayweather: No, I don’t think so. I thought he got beat both times, he got beat fairly easy both times. I don’t think that Teddy Atlas — or anyone else — can help him win. He may do a little better but at the end of the day, Tim’s been in a lot of wars since the last time they fought. He may have more wear and tear on him than Pacquiao does.

Robert Brown: Are people getting carried away after Bradley’s performance over Brandon Rios?

Jeff Mayweather: The one thing is this, for some reason they want to make Freddie Roach greater than what he is, just like when Cotto beat Martinez — who had one leg — next thing they want to do is give Freddie all the praise. Freddie Roach didn’t do nothing, Sergio Martinez couldn’t stand up, he fell on his own. That’s the same thing with Bradley, Rios is finished, he’s a guy that’s been in too many wars and was killing himself making that weight. Rios even said it himself, he said it was time for him to quit. Rios is young but he’s been in so many wars that even he realizes that.

Robert Brown: Do you see another easy points victory for Pacquiao over Bradley?

Jeff Mayweather: I think that we’ll see almost the exact same thing. I don’t think that Teddy Atlas is going to make him win, he probably won’t even make him look much better.

Robert Brown: How much difference can a good trainer make with a fighter?

Jeff Mayweather: Don’t get me wrong, you can make adjustments with a fighter. There are certain fighters that lack in defense and you can make that fighter a better defensive fighter, if you know how to teach it.

To me, Teddy is more about trying to use psychological stuff, saying stuff like, “Your kid’s at home watching you on TV.” Get the fuck out of here, that bullshit don’t mean nothing, your son doesn’t care about that. When he did that crap with Michael Moorer, I couldn’t believe it.

I’m not saying that Teddy’s not a good trainer, what I’m saying is that his type of training is more psychological than physical, it’s not really hands-on. He’s just saying mind jedi tricks, and by telling somebody something I guess they’re supposed to get it and that’s supposed to win the fight for them. I don’t think so.

Fights are physical and you gotta get your ass in that ring and do something, it all comes down to skills. I’m not saying nothing bad about Teddy Atlas, he is one of the best commentators because he’s straight up about the things that he says, and I like him for that.

At the end of the day, I don’t think he’s going to be able to change Tim Bradley. I think they gave him way too much credit for what happened with Rios. Rios was a guy that was just done, that was it. They’re going to sell Teddy Atlas, that’s the only thing they can sell, you can’t sell the fight itself. The fight is happening because Teddy Atlas is involved and then you have a story line that you can actually build on, but it really doesn’t mean nothing.

Robert Brown: Can you talk to us about your YouTube channel? How is the Mayweather Boxing channel going?

Jeff Mayweather: It’s doing real well. We do a lot of funny content on it, some serious stuff, a little bit of everything. I think that anybody that subscribes to it will have fun watching.
