Boxing trainer and former IBO super featherweight champion ‘Jazzy’ Jeff Mayweather is thought of by many as the quieter of the Mayweather brothers, but in many ways he is just as out spoken. Mayweather is highly respected in both the boxing game and in the MMA world, as he has trained some of his fighters to championships in both sports.

In part 1 of my interview with Jeff Mayweather, I discuss with him the retirement of his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr. and get his views on if he believes that was the last fight for Floyd. Jeff also talks about Floyd’s legacy and if he thinks it will grow in the coming years. Additionally, Mayweather shares his thoughts on potential fights Crawford-Pacquiao and Khan vs. Pacquiao. Here is what Jeff Mayweather had to say.

Robert Brown: What did you think of Floyd Mayweather’s last performance with Andre Berto? Do you think Floyd will come back or will he stay retired this time?

Jeff Mayweather: I think that he’ll stay retired. There’s nothing left to prove. The only thing that people want is for him to break Rocky Marciano’s record, and at the end of the day that record doesn’t really mean that much. At the end of the day, 49-0 or 50-0 is not gonna mean anything when you’re talking about a guy who’s been undefeated for nineteen years. It’s never been done in no sport, that’s the record that means something.

Fighting more world champions than anyone else, making $800 million in the ring, those are the things that will probably never be surpassed and those are the records that are really the records. It’s his choice, it’s up to him. Floyd’s legacy is intact, you can hate him, you can love him, it doesn’t matter because one thing that doesn’t lie is the numbers, the numbers don’t lie. When Floyd says that he’s the best ever, that’s exactly what his numbers said, because he outdid everybody in every sense of the word of boxing.

Robert Brown: Do you think as time passes on that Floyd will start to get more of the respect he deserves from some people?

Jeff Mayweather: Oh yeah of course. A lot of times you don’t get respect until you’re removed from the ring because people didn’t realize the greatness that it takes to get where he’s at. They don’t realize that until they watch for the next ten years nobody even comes close to anything that he’s done, that’s when people will sit back and say, ” You should have seen this guy right here that fought ten or twenty years ago, you’ve never seen anybody like him.”

The one thing in boxing is this, nobody wants to see a guy undefeated, and especially when Floyd makes it so easy. He’s not in there in a war — and that’s what people call a great fight, that’s not a great fight, that’s jut two people beating up each other. A great fight is being a master in that ring, the objective of boxing is not to get hit.

Then you have everybody talking this crap that, “He fought Mosley when he was past his prime, he fought such and such when he was past his prime,” and this came out of Oscar De La Hoya’s mouth and he fought Pernell Whittaker when he was at the end of his career, he fought Chavez when he was done. Why does he open his mouth about anything? He’s the one that’s gonna put this stuff out there and yet you got your ass whooped by him, so you really have no reason to talk.

Robert Brown: What do you think about Manny Pacquiao facing either Amir Khan or Terence Crawford next?

Jeff Mayweather: I think both of them would be challenging for him, I think Crawford would beat him. I think Pacquiao would beat Amir Khan because Amir’s chin is made of china, if he gets hit, he’s going out.

Robert Brown: Manny’s power hasn’t been the same recently, do you think that Amir Khan could take a couple of his shots and survive?

Jeff Mayweather: He possibly could but the thing is that every time he gets hit with a clean shot — even against weaker opposition — he still wobbles like he’s about to go. Algieri wobbled him, Diaz dropped him and Diaz has never been a puncher and he’s way past his prime.

Robert Brown: Why do you think that Crawford can beat Manny?

Jeff Mayweather: I just think Crawford is an up and coming fighter that can actually fight and takes a good shot, has good hand speed, and can fight both ways. He can switch it both ways, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
