Jeff Mayweather: “I think that Chris Algieri is a great fight for Pacquiao, it will put him back on top and back in the winning column.”

I recently had a chance to speak ‘Jazzy’ Jeff Mayweather to get his views on some of the hot topics in the sport. Jeff is a renowned trainer who has taken multiple fighters to world championship bouts, Mayweather is also a former IBO champion who held a record of 32-10 during his nine year career. Topics discussed in this interview include, Floyd Mayweather’s strategy for his rematch with Marcos Maidana, Chris Algieri’s chances against Manny Pacquiao, and much more. Here is what Jeff Mayweather had to say in part 2 of his interview.

Robert Brown: Do you think Floyd will be able to stop Maidana this time, or will he go out to win every round?

Jeff Mayweather: I think that Floyd is gonna be Floyd. I think he’s gonna go out there and he’s gonna box. I don’t think it’s so much about caring to knock Maidana out, because nobody else has knocked Maidana out. It makes no sense for you to be trying to accomplish a feat that no one else has done because that’s when you put yourself in harms way.

That’s the reason Michael Moorer got knocked out by George Foreman, because he kept saying to himself, “I’m gonna be the only person to knock him out.” Okay, there you go, now the guy’s got a world title at 45 years old. Floyd’s too smart for that, he’s not gonna get caught up in trying to knock Maidana out. If it happens, it happens, but Floyd’s way too smart for that.

Robert Brown: In this fight, do you think Floyd will use his legs to stay in the center of the ring more and not give Maidana a chance to get into close quarters like he did in the first fight?

Jeff Mayweather: I think it’s going to be a little bit of both, but of course I think Floyd is gonna be more on point and a lot more focused than he was last time. I think it’s going to be one of the types of performances that people expect from Floyd. He was able to defeat Maidana at his best fight that he could fight. He was dirty, he did everything he possibly could, and not only was he dirty, his trainer was sending him out telling him to be dirty, Garcia.

Robert Brown: So you’re expecting a wider decision this time?

Jeff Mayweather: Yes, I expect a wider decision. Even in the first fight, everyone thought that the fight was so close, they were caught up in the hype of the fight that night. It’s one of those things that, people are so used to watching Floyd whitewash everyone, basically almost never losing a round, that when Floyd starts to get hit, the first thing people say is, “Oh he lost.” He didn’t lose, he didn’t come close to losing. Everyone that said that, when they watched the replays, they had it scored just like the judges did, everyone that I know.

Robert Brown: Manny Pacquiao is facing Chris Algieri on November the 22nd. This fight isn’t likely to do a major amount of Pay-per-views. Why do you think Bob Arum decided to take this fight?

Jeff Mayweather: To be honest, I really don’t know. I guess he has a title, right?

Robert Brown: Yeah.

Jeff Mayweather: I guess that could be the only reason, because he has a world title. Algieri, people act like he did such a spectacular with Provodnikov but I thought that fight could have easily went the other way.

I don’t think that he did anything spectacular, he didn’t show me anything that would make me think that Manny Pacquiao has anything to worry about. I think that it’s a great fight for Manny, it will put him back on top and back in the winning column.

Robert Brown: Pacquiao hasn’t had a stoppage since 2009 against Cotto. Where do you think his power’s gone, and do you think he can stop Algieri?

Jeff Mayweather: (laughs) I’m sure we all know where his power went, but we won’t discuss that. I don’t think that he’ll knock out Algieri either, I just think that he’ll win. Then again, where is the fight gonna be?

Robert Brown: China.

Jeff Mayweather: He might knock him out then. I think that has a huge bearing on the outcome of the fight and how the fight is gonna play out. I think that has a huge bearing on it.

Robert Brown: Algieri has boxing skills and Manny has had difficulties with boxers in the past, you don’t think Algieri has any chance with Pacquaio?

Jeff Mayweather: To be honest, I’m just not sold on him. He pulled off a squeaker, a fight that could have easily went to the other guy. It was great that he got the decision, but at the same time, it wasn’t impressive at all. There was nothing impressive about him to me.

For a guy that was supposed to be a boxer, he didn’t do a great job of boxing. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand the dynamics of the fight, because he was in a phone booth against Provodnikov. Everything was set up for him to lose but he fought hard and somehow squeaked out a decision.

Robert Brown: One final question. You said you had been in the gym earlier, what have you been up to and who are you training?

Jeff Mayweather: I’m back training my fighters and I’m feeling much better. I was sick for a little while and now I’m back to my old self again. I can train my own fighters and feel good about it, and I’m back traveling again. I’m happy, I’m back to my old self again.

Man oh Man these Mayweather’s sure do like the innuendo. We all know where his power went! (ie: steroids accusation again) just when you thought Jeffy was the decent one in the family. Let me break it down: No knock out for Pacquiao since Cotto. Ok Clotty , who’s gonna knock him out? Mosely, It can’t be done! Ever see the Vernon Forrest fight? Even he, tasted the power went down like a rock and ran like a scared rabbit. Margo. That beating was 10 worse than a knock out. This was a guy who weighed plus 20lbs on fight night. Oh yeah, when was the last time anybody knocked out Marquez? Tim Bradley, when was the last time he got knocked out . (I didn’t say knocked down). Who knocked out Brandon Rios( Impossible right). So come on knuckle heads he hasn’t lost any power, he’s just step slower and he’s been fighting dudes that are slightly or substantially bigger than him. Thats right, Marquez looked like the freaking hulk their last fight. The dude Pacquiao ain’t no real welterweight period.

Who’s Floyd knocked out? Oh yeah Victor Ortiz ( by sucker punch) a guy who’s been knocked out and or quit on several occasions before he fought Floyd. We all know Floyd ain’t no knockout artist and doesn’t claim to be. But hey Jeff this myth that you are a top flight trainer is figuratively on steroids. Hey Jeffy, whens the last time a fighter you trained headlined a PPV fight. Oh yeah that’s right never. Nuff said ,
