Marcos Maidana: “If Mayweather is gonna run like a little bitch, I’m gonna have to chase him all around!”

On September 13th, Marcos Maidana will become only the second fighter to get a second shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr, as the two fighters are set to have a rematch that will take place at the MGM Grand arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first fight saw Maidana land more punches on Mayweather than any other opponent, and also made for a close fight that some believe Maidana deserved to win.

I recently had a chance to speak with Marcos Maidana during an international media call to get some of this thoughts on ‘Mayhem.’ Marcos spoke on the possibility of retiring if he did not get the rematch with Mayweather, and also talked about what he will need to do if Floyd decides to box, and stays away from him. Additionally, Marcos talked about adjustments he has to make, if he feels he needs a knockout to win, and the referee for the event. Here is what Marcos Maidana had to say.

Jenna J: Before the rematch was announced there were rumors in the press that you might consider retiring if you didn’t get a fight with Floyd. How close were you to retiring if you didn’t get a fight with Floyd, and if you don’t win, can you see a scenario where you would actually retire?

Marcos Maidana: The truth is I haven’t thought about my future, but it was something I said — that if Mayweather didn’t give me the rematch this year, I would retire. I would have retired for the rest of this year at least and then see what came up next year. It was something that crossed my mind, and I was willing to retire.

Jenna J: You said that you hope Mayweather stands and fights with you. How do you see yourself winning a fight with Mayweather if he doesn’t do that? Can you see yourself winning the fight if he looks to stay away and simply boxes?

Marcos Maidana: Well, I’m getting prepared for whatever Floyd does in the ring. I hope that he stands and fights, but if he’s gonna run like a little bitch, I’m gonna have to chase him all around. I’m prepared to do that.

ADDITIONAL QUOTES FROM MARCOS MAIDANA

Is your only chance of winning by knockout?

Marcos Maidana: I think that I can win by decision or by knockout. I was very close to winning by decision in the first fight, we weren’t too far off in the scorecards. I think by applying a little more pressure and landing better punches, I can win by decision. It would be nice to win by knockout though.

What adjustments do you have to make to get the victory

Marcos Maidana: My attack in the first fight went well, but I didn’t have the distance to throw my punches with more power and precision. I don’t think I caught Mayweather with a good, solid shot because if I catch him, he will feel it.

How is your focus going into this fight?

Marcos Maidana: This time I’m training to win. I’m training knowing what to expect. I know Mayweather now and what he brings to the table. I’m calm and have nothing to worry about. That is why I’m very well trained, I’ve trained very hard.

Do you think you think it’s an advantage fighting Mayweather again?

Marcos Maidana: I think it’s an advantage for me, maybe for him too. For me it’s an advantage now that I know his style. I’m going to take advantage of the mistakes that he makes — even though he doesn’t make many. I’m going to correct my mistakes in order to attack him with more precision in this fight.

Why do you think Floyd chose to give you a rematch?

Marcos Maidana: I don’t know why he gave me the rematch, to be honest. I’m happy I’m getting the rematch with Mayweather and I’m going to take advantage of it, I will do everything possible to be able to win this fight.

Do you think Floyd felt a lot of pressure to fight you again?

Marcos Maidana: I think he gave me the rematch because the first fight was so close. I think he wants to show that he can beat me decisively, or maybe it’s a business decision. I don’t care what the reason is, I’m happy that he gave me the rematch.

Kenny Bayless is the referee for the second fight. Do you think that helps Floyd?

Marcos Maidana: Maybe the referee will help him, but I’m gonna do my job and whatever happens, happens.

he didn’t run last time … so not sure what Maidana is rambling on about …

  4. alviend says:

Maidana is anticipating that Floyd is going to run or move more this time (like what he did with canelo or most of his fights) because Floyd said the next fight is going to be more easy. Maidana seems to be doing a mind games to make floyd fight the same way he did the first time.

Anyway i think Floyd will run (or box if you will) and win a dominant 12 rounds, which will make the second fight really boring moreso not worth a payperview fee. Floydcott!!!!

We all now the only reason people see Floyd fight is to see him lose. Who the hell wants to see a defensive fighter fight? Nobody! That makes for a boring fight if you ask me. The rest of of the dumbass people that like him need to realize that if it weren’t for television keeping count of the fights won by decision not even they would see him fight

  6. Nazarene says:

Mayweather has aged, and with the power and speed of Maidana the latter has all the chances to register the win. Let us remove from the mind of many that Mayweather is not vulnerable. He can drop face down on the canvass and his bad mouth will definitely stop uttering unkind words His rosy record is only preserve by being cherry picker on his fights many times.
