Marvin Hagler: “Pacquiao would be a little nervous about being stopped or knocked out again if he fought Mayweather”

(transcribed by Michael Readman) Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. It is a fight that has been talked about for over 5 years now, but with both sides failing to come to terms in the past, and Pacquiao meeting defeat twice, talk of the fight seemed all but dead. Now with Manny Pacquiao’s recent return to dominance against Brandon Rios, and also getting elevated to the #1 contender spot in the WBC, talk has once again sparked about this fight happening.

In the third and final part of my “On The Ropes” interview with legendary middleweight boxing champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler, I get his views on the event, and how he thinks it will play out if it were happen today. Marvin also shared his thoughts about a much talked about fight that never happened for his career, a fight with middleweight legend Carlos Monzon, and also shared his advice to anyone that wants to become a fighter. Here is what Marvin Hagler had to say.

Jenna J: Now Marvin, I want to ask you about the current boxing landscape. Who are some of the fighters that you enjoy watching today?

Marvin Hagler: Today I like to see Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao, the Klitschko brothers, and watching these young guys coming up. I know it’s just as tough as it is for them in their era as it was for me as when I was in my era, but the thing that I mentioned to you earlier, everybody seems to be getting a belt, they got too many organizations out there and not enough fighters are real legit fighters that deserve it.

I see fighters sometimes with only twenty something fights and they are world champions and they don’t stay there long enough for you to get to know them or not even the public to get to know them. That part is something a little strange, but it’s happening now, it didn’t happen that well in my career, I mean everything was very hard in my era.

Jenna J: That’s what people say in boxing today that it’s a little bit soft, but from your perspective, you’ve watched Floyd Mayweather Jr, if he was back in your era, how do you think he would of done?

Marvin Hagler: Well in my era I think it was much tougher and I think they would see what boxing really was about, and that things didn’t come so easy as it is today. There was a lot of politics, there was a lot of other ups and downs. It’s a strange business this boxing game. I think it’s not a game for everybody, it was hard work, just hoping for the breaks and hoping that somebody would give you that break. It was a long and hard road.

Jenna J: Speaking of Mayweather, people always wonder today, how do you beat him? He’s undefeated, you’ve seen his style. How do you think a fighter today would go about beating him?

Marvin Hagler: Well I think he’s at the pinnacle of his career right now, even though I think he’s got a style that creates a lot of problems for people, but he’s a good fighter you know, I take nothing away from him, but like I said, there’s none of the fighters that there was back in my era here today.

Jenna J: You mentioned Pacquiao a second ago, he’s basically just returned from a knockout loss, he won a decision. I’m just wondering where do you think he now sits in boxing? Do you think he could be that guy to beat Mayweather?

Marvin Hagler: No, I think there’s no secrets right now because after Pacquiao got knocked out I believe that Mayweather will find a secret. You know what would have been nice, it would have been the first part if they fought when they both were trying to figure each other out.

Now I believe Mayweather, by sitting on the outside he would have the advantage because he knows now that Pacquiao don’t have a chin like he used to, plus he would be a little nervous about being stopped or knocked out again. I think it would still be a great fight for the public to see.

Jenna J: Speaking of great fights that nobody ever got to see, it’s everybody’s fantasy fight at middleweight, you versus Carlos Monzon. I know it was briefly talked about when you were a contender but how do you think it would have played out had you two gone into the ring?

Marvin Hagler: Well at the time I thought I would have done very well. Carlos, I gave him a lot of respect, he was a real true champion and the only thing that disappointed me because I tried to tie his record with one more title defense, I would have tied it at fourteen.

I think something was in the makings of me not really doing that. I could have had that, that’s how close it was, but I think it would have been a good fight between me and Carlos Monzon, this guy had a terrible right hand, something like a Tommy Hearns, he could knock you out like that, very tall, awkward, but he was a great champion, that‘s all I can say.

Jenna J: When you see young fighters out there today, if you could give them any piece of advice starting their pro career, what would it be?

Marvin Hagler: I would say continue to work hard, continue to sacrifice, the boxing game is not easy. Hopefully you will be able to put your money away and hopefully the dreams that you have, whatever they may be, will come true. Even if you’re looking for another big fight or who you would love to fight, hopefully these things will happen. Being patient was the best thing for me, so maybe it can be the best thing for them too.

Jenna J: Finally, for all your fans listening out there, any message you want to pass out in closing?

Marvin Hagler: I just want to say thank you all for giving me the support that you did and I would just like to say a Merry Christmas to each and every one of you and thank you for being a marvelous fan! (laughs)

  1. how can floyd knocked pac out if floyd is avoiding pac?

    • Baho Puwet says:

Pac is not fearful of getting knocked out. He got knocked out 2x already and knows he can come back from it. I think Hagler is still delirious from being outpointed & outsmarted by Sugar Ray Leonard. Ray clearly won that fight on points…… he landed more punches in total while Hagler landed more power shots.
Floyd JailWeather Jr. doesn’t have the testicular manhood to fight Pacquiao. Mike Tyson said Manny has all the tools to annihilate & circumcise Jail Jr.

  2. Pacman says:

Are crazy? Flyod is scared in facing pacquiao. How come floyd can hurt manny? Floyd do not have a punching power. His punch is like touching you with pillow.

  3. Pacman says:

    To marvin hagler. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jfcyW6OISH8
Watch this link: Specially the end part: and tell me if Floyd will win against manny. Floyd is very scared. And if the thinking of floyd is like that he will never win against manny.

  4. xer says:

he,he,he to Mr.Marvin i’m a fan of yours, but just want to clarify first and for all this opinion yours for Mr. Money May its because your american and he’s american too? just asking,.. co’z how can Floyd knock out Pacman coz its very obvious this is the fight that the whole world is waiting to happen a long time ago,but looks like Mr. Sprinter ah sorry Mr. Money May obviously avoiding Pacman ever since,..i wish Floyd make up his mind if he’s claiming the BEST P4P then fight and knockout Manny…

  5. bigfoot says:

    ROTFL to hagler

  6. Brett says:

Hagler’s obviously been hit in the head too many times.

Mayweather hasn’t finished, nor even HURT an opponent (without throwing a cheap shot) since he fought an undersized Ricky Hatton 6 years ago. Even the cheap shot was still a stage act, Ortiz obviously took a dive.

  7. johnny says:

People , stop bashing the marvelous 1 ….Hagler is only saying that because he wants Floyd to gain confidence to fight Manny..

  8. Baho Puwet says:

Unlike Smelly Paki Khan, Manny has a decent chin. He’s been hit many times on the chin by Pee Wee Marquez in their first 3 fights, got hurt, wobbled but he never went down.
In the 4th fight, with the help of Memo’s magic ‘roids and a LUCKY punch that landed flush while Pac was coming in, anyone would’ve been knocked out.
BTW = Nacho figured out Pac’s footwork & pattern when he’s about to unleash. Pee Wee Marquez alluded to this in an interview but stopped short as he didn’t want to give it away. If u watch Manny’s fights and especially the 4th fight with The Pee Drinker when he got knocked out, Pac has a habit of stomping his right foot a few times b4 coming in with punches. Nacho figured this one out…..

    • Nick says:

Remember Manny accidentally stepped on Marquez as per the HBO boxing video. If Manny did not twist his ankle and fall right into Marquez’s right, Marquez would not have knocked him out. He would have been gone in the 7th round. Lucky dude.

The better, instead doing kamekaze that would fit the style of Mayweather. The knock out from Marquez gave a good lesson to change and adjust to decrease the risk of being hit.Paquiao though did a great job by being precautious against bigger man like delahoya, cotto,Margarito and even Hatton. For the mind of Maywether based on Paquiao’s performance against Rios, the midget is quite different boxer as we what we always though that attributed his high fear of lossing.

RUBBISH ARTICLE – reflects Jenna & on the ropes. PUSH FLOYD to TO FIGHT PACMAN! these people are frightened that a Filipino is boxing’s greatest. Can’t count 8! nobody comes close! what if Pacman did not skip a couple of divisions?

    • Jenna J says:

Now now Wbox, how are the views of a legendary boxer rubbish. He has an opinion like anyone else and I just present these opinions to the great people of the Philippines and the boxing fans around the world 🙂

  13. stephen tarr says:

Floyd does not step in with his punchers, watch his fights his arm is straight at point of contact that wont knock anyubody out, safet first second and third thats floyd, maybe Hagler is trying to goad Floyd into becoming a man

  14. Nick says:

What secret? Manny accidentally stepped on Marquez and twisted his ankle (HBOboxing video). Marquez got lucky. Let Floyd fight Manny and let’s see who is really the best. WBC has done its part and made Manny the number 1 contender. I hope the media can pressure Floyd to fight Manny. Jenna, I suggest you get Floyd in the ring with Manny. He should win this fight easily and get the $100M without any worries.

  15. scared says:

Let gets it on say Manny to Floyd is he not ashamed????
if your the greatest P4P fights and K/O Manny so that the world can decide who is the BEST!!!

  17. alfred c. Ong says:

pac had experienced 3 k.o. in his boxing career. i dnt think he will be afraid or nervous in fighting anybody incl. FM.. What is good with the pac is that he conceded being k.o. Is part of the sport.. unlike FM who is so egoistic with his perfect score. Those opponents FM had faced are hand-picked. They chose opponents that their team had already evaluated that FM could beat ’em..pac at this moment is already reaching out to the FM team. To sit down and talk to make the fight happen. An act of an officer and a gentleman..if pac loses the match, then it would prove that FM is the best. See! Lets come to reality man….

  18. ayi says:

Manny is not scared to be ko..floyd is..thats why floyd doesnt want to fight..simple.

  19. phil borda says:

I think Hagler just doesn’t know Pacquiao’s mentality and what drives Pacquiao to fight. I believe Mayweather is the one who thinks he will be knocked out by Pacquiao that’s why he does everything in his power to avoid the fight.

  20. mateng says:

mr hagler, whos afraid of who? and jenna j.do you agree to what hagler said?

  21. Bigs says:

Hagler is not only Mayweather fan but a Believer. I’m a Pactard, but unless these 2 man fight, no one could say who’s the best among these 2 guys. Period and Period. I don’t want a debate because I need facts. I don’t like also to compare their performance to their common opponent as Mayweather will be lossing in that position and that;s unfair to Floyd. So, for Floyd fans and belivers, better shut your mouth! Fight first then we know who is the best. Period!

    • Bigs says:

Hagler do your homework and research before you open your mouth. Whos’ afraid to be K.O.? Manny has a 3 KO on his career and you are saying Pacman afraid for being KO again ? What the heck! If you are one of the secret adviser of Floyd, Instead of bashing and disrespect Manny’s credential, advise him to fight in the ring. Period , no ifs no buts, no excuses. Then we will know who’s the best among these 2 guys. Period and no debate. Those who would like to comment on this in favor to Mayweather, If you don’t have official receipt and you will just talking an opinion and personal belief (just talking about your religion as true religion), better shut your mouth. I will not entertain you.
