Mayweather-Pacquiao: A winner decided based on common opposition

56 Submitted by on Sat, 06 December 2014, 02:25

In the previous article, we covered three of the five common opponents that Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao, have both faced off against in the squared circle.

Firstly, we accessed the fights against Oscar De La Hoya. I gave Manny Pacquiao the nod over De La Hoya due to the manner in which ‘Pacman’ took ‘Golden Boy’ to the cleaners.

Second, we covered Mayweather and Pacquiao’s fights against ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley. I had to edge my thoughts towards Manny Pacquiao against Mosley. Shane Mosley was a year older than he fought Mayweather, but for me, I had to give this contest to ‘Pacman’ due to the fact Mayweather was tagged hard in the second round and rallied to gather his thoughts and march on to a wide points victory on the cards.

Pacquiao dropped Mosley in the third round and ‘Sugar’ did not want to engage any more. Mosley, for me, settled to see the final bell. I can understand people giving it to Mayweather, but the knockdown Pacquiao produced of Shane Mosley, personally, just swung things in Manny Pacquiao’s favor.

And finally, we studied the two mens bouts against Juan Manuel Marquez.
I leaned towards Floyd Mayweather due to the fact he dealt with ‘Dinamita’ in a much easier fashion than Pacquiao ever did in four contests.

With the score currently 2-1 for Pacquiao, we now look at the two remaining pugilists Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have boxed.

Next up we take a look at the way both men got the nod over Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton.

Mayweather vs Hatton

The bout took place in December 2008. Hatton competed with Mayweather in the early rounds. In round one, Hatton caught Mayweather with a left jab which knocked ‘Money’ slightly on his heels, but mainly Mayweather, was caught off balance. The constant pressure that Hatton put Mayweather under seemed to unsettle Floyd slightly. This however, didn’t last much longer.

With the history of cuts Hatton was well known for, Mayweather opened a cut over the right eye of Hatton. In round six, referee Joe Cortez deducted a point from Ricky Hatton for throwing punches at the back of Floyd Mayweather’s head, while Mayweather had actually ducked under the ropes. Hatton, was in the fight until the sixth round.

After the sixth, ‘Hitman’ was clearly tired from chasing Mayweather all around the ring, Mayweather then took over after realizing that Hatton was starting to tire. The undefeated Mayweather then started to land an array of stiff counter punches to the head of Hatton. Hatton was getting nailed with everything Mayweather was throwing.

In round ten, Mayweather pulled his signature ‘Check Hook’ on Ricky Hatton, as Hatton charged forward looking to land on the slick Mayweather. The shot worked to perfection and sent Hatton’s head directly into the ring post. Ricky Hatton gamely got to his feet, looking dazed and confused, but he said he was okay to referee Joe Cortez.

A few seconds later, Mayweather knew he had Hatton in deep waters and threw various shots towards Hatton. Hatton’s legs went from under him as he collapsed in a heap, purely out of exhaustion and the accumulation of punches. Joe Cortez waved the fight off before Hatton even hit the canvas.

Judge: Paul Smith 88-82 | Judge: Dave Moretti 89-81 | Judge: Burt A. Clements 89-81.

Pacquiao vs Hatton

The fight took place in May 2009 and it started out at a frantic pace. Most had expected this to happen due to the styles of both fighters. Pacquiao was landing heavy shots right away. Hatton got a few shots in on Manny, but nothing of any substance. Manny Pacquiao dropped Hatton twice in the first round. Hatton seemed okay, but it was to become clear he was certainly anything but.

In the second round, Pacquiao unleashed a left hook to knock Hatton out in the final second of the round. Hatton sprawled helplessly on the canvass after Pacquiao’s left hand, with referee Kenny Bayless saying that “he didn’t have to count.” Hatton lay on the canvass for several minutes before getting up. The knockout, was probably Manny Pacquiao’s best one punch KO of his career.

Things came to the fore, surrounding Hatton’s training camp and his lifestyle leading up to the Pacquiao fight. Hatton, after losing for the first time switched from his long time trainer, Billy Graham, to Floyd Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. as his new coach.

I have read Hatton’s autobiography and Ricky lays everything out for all to know.
Mayweather Sr had Hatton running up mountains with army boots on. Ricky Hatton, said in his book that he was tired of this regimen and he should have said enough is enough, I’m going to run in my trainers as I normally would. Hatton’s brother Matthew, was also in the camp. He stopped using the boots he was told to train in whilst running by Mayweather Sr. Ricky Hatton said he wished he had done the same. He was just too nice to Floyd Sr and let him get away with too much.

Hatton had this to say on the sparring incident two weeks prior facing Pacquiao.
“I had peaked too soon. Everyone in the camp could see I needed a rest. There was one day when one of my sparring partners knocked me on my backside. I came out of the ring, sat on the steps and put a towel over my head and I just started sobbing and crying.” I have heard a rumor that the sparring partner was actually Cuban star, Erislandy Lara. No shame in being dropped by a middleweight in sparring.

The actual peaking too soon was obviously more of a concern for Hatton.

What has came out regarding Hatton’s lifestyle following the defeat to Mayweather (maybe even prior to that) Hatton was clearly a mess emotionally and physically. Drinking huge amounts of alcohol, taking large quantities of cocaine is no way for a boxer to live. Hatton has since admitted suffering from depression following the Mayweather defeat, and contemplated committing suicide in the aftermath of the stunning knockout, delivered by Manny Pacquiao.

With all said and done, Mayweather and Pacquiao’s bouts against Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton, yes ‘Pacman’ knocked Ricky out cold in two rounds, but Mayweather fought Hatton at a reasonably solid stage of the Englishman’s career.
Hatton was undefeated when he faced ‘Money.’ The version of Ricky Hatton that Pacquiao faced, was already a beaten man walking into the ring. (Hatton’s words, not mine.)

Scorecards at the time of the knockout.
Judge: Paul Smith 88-82 | Judge: Dave Moretti 89-81 | Judge: Burt A. Clements 89-81

I have to give this one to Mayweather, for beating the better, more solid, more mentally stable and true version of Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton.

2-2 EVEN

Having covered four fighters Mayweather and Pacquiao have both boxed, we are all tied up and now we turn things to the final shared opponent, Miguel Cotto.

Floyd Mayweather vs Miguel Cotto

Mayweather faced Cotto in May 2012. ‘Money’ Mayweather, found himself in the ring with a very live opponent in Miguel Cotto. Cotto would certainly be there all night and he would not wilt, nor quit. Mayweather pretty much dominated the main part of the fight, but that wasn’t without anything coming in return from Cotto.

Cotto had his moments but was largely outclassed by the shrewd ring IQ of Mayweather.Mayweather did however, have a bloodied nose for the first time in his career. Fifteen or so years in the pro game without a bloody nose tells you a lot about Mayweather and his defensive skills.

The damage to the Mayweather nose clearly tells all viewing that Cotto, did indeed get through to the face of Mayweather on more than one occasion. Not many have done that.

As The fight wore on, Mayweather began to seriously dominate Cotto and at the late stages of the twelfth and final round, Mayweather even looked like he could get Cotto out of there when he rocked the Puerto Rican star.
I don’t think Mayweather was particularly looking for the stoppage, it was more an accumulation of shots, landed on Miguel Cotto.

Floyd Mayweather won by a unanimous points victory on the cards, once more.
After the fight Mayweather said to Cotto: “You’re a hell of a champion.”
Floyd continued “You’re the toughest guy I ever fought.”

Scorecards for the bout were.
Judge: Robert Hoyle 118-110 | Judge: Patricia Morse Jarman 117-111 | Judge: Dave Moretti 117-111.

Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto

The bout between Pacquiao and Cotto took place in Novermber 2009.
The fight was at a catchweight of 145 lbs.

Pacquiao floored Cotto with a right hand, early doors in the third round.
As Cotto advanced forward looking to get inside on Pacquiao, ‘Pacman’ unleashed a huge left hand that once more had Miguel Cotto on the canvas in round four.

The referee eventually stopped the fight in the twelfth and final round after Pacquiao, had bludgeoned Miguel Cotto around the ring, and enough was finally enough for the Puerto Rican, who was battered and bruised by the Filipino slugger. Cotto revealed he wanted to quit after the eleventh round, but his corner told him to continue.

Scorecards at the time of the TKO.
judge: Adalaide Byrd 99-109 | Judge: Duane Ford 99-108 | Judge: Dave Moretti 100-108.

Clearly the fifth and final bout has to be awarded to Manny Pacquiao, in this contest the two adversaries had against Miguel Cotto. Manny Pacquiao, dismantled the Puerto Rican slugger.

Final score – 3-2 Manny Pacquiao

You can weigh everything up until the cows come home regarding Mayweather and Pacquiao’s common opposition – when they fought them, what weight they fought them at, if they were coming of the back of a good win, all of that and so many other factors. Will any of that actually produce a YES moment?

The seeming decisive factor here is the way Mayweather dealt with Juan Manuel Marquez.
Yes, the weight jump for Marquez is a point, but even so Mayweather had been out of the sport for two years.
That too, is a huge factor.

Yes, Mayweather’s legs have slowed down quite noticeably in the two Maidaina bouts and yes, Pacquiao’s power no longer seems to be what it once was. These two factors just seem to have levelled things up possibly in the favour of ‘Pacman.’ We wont know until the two men meet in the ring.

Mayweather looked sublime against a young up and comer in Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Floyd’s two performances against Marcos Maidaina were hardly anywhere near the display Mayweather gave us all when he faced ‘Canelo.’ That was a real master class of boxing. Does that mean Mayweather wont be able to perform at the level he did against Saul Alvarez in his next bout? Who knows?

Remember the way everyone thought Floyd was on the way out after the Cotto performance.
We were then dazzled by the Mayweather skill set against a younger, hungrier ‘Canelo’ in Floyd’s next fight, only to see the performance level dip against Maidaina. Maybe Floyd thought Canelo was more of a threat and he had to make sure that Alvarez never got close enough to him to cause any real damage?

Pacquiao looked excellent against Chris Algieri recently.
I think Manny looks a little cautios in his approach after being knocked out by Marquez.
Let’s be honest here, who wouldn’t after such a devastating defeat.

Just how much does Manny have left in the tank against a high calibre opponent?
Will the power be there as it used to be? Will it return?
Can Manny Pacquiao roll back the years and stop Floyd Mayweather or possibly outbox the slowing, ageing Mayweather?

If the power doesn’t exist any longer for ‘Pacman’ can he outbox this version of Mayweather?
What if the version of Mayweather who faced Saul Alvarez turns up? Can this version of Manny Pacquiao beat that Mayweather?

The questions can seriously go on all day, all night.

I believe that if the version of Mayweather turns up like he did against Saul Alvarez, then Mayweather beats Manny Pacquiao decisively.

If the version of ‘Money’ turns up like he has done for the past two bouts Floyd had against Marcos Maidaina, then Mayweather could be in trouble.

Manny Pacquiao HAS to turn up. The REAL Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao.
The all guns blazing version, the version with power in both hands and power at welterweight.
A true 147 lbs with no catchweights involved.

For the sanity of everyone, lets just hope they do finally get in the ring and prove what will happen!
It’s already years overdue, lets not wait any longer.

I have to disagree with you on hatton vs mayweather. Hatton fought fmj at welterweight the weight fmj is comfortable with, while hatton fought pac at his natural weight which is 140lbs.

Watch this link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8S5upDGK1Q. At 2:46 of round number 4, floyd gets tagged by Judah with a straight left. Imagine if it were Pacquiao… Floyd can easily be hit by a southpaw. DUCK’S REASON.

Follow this link also, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qEOAOc63bc. HEAR WHAT LARRY MERCHANT SAID. They all knew that putting Mayweather jr against a southpaw inside the squared circle is very very risky. Therefore, Floyd avoids Pacquiao at all costs. They all are never sure this Duck could surely win if Pacman would be his opponent. POWER, SPEED, FOOTWORK, AND MOST OF ALL, RELENTLESS PUNCHING IN VOLUMES! Scared? Pretty sure he is… It’s very risky when all people love about you is your boxing skills. And Floyd is very much aware that if he loses even just once, there is no more to love about him. He is beatable after all. He will only hear bashers and haters punching him everywhere. What goes around comes around. Broner can testify lol.
Floyd doesn’t have Pacquiao’s charisma that even if he wins or loses, people still love him. This is eating Floyd alive.

Omg you Mammy bandwagon wannabe boxing fans shut up…I’m Filipino and I followed Mannys career and he is a flake…born again pretentious all of a sudden righteous flake is Manny. He has you people fooled..comparing Hatton fights really?! May opened up the way , or exposed for other people to beat Hatton simple as that enough said. Manny fought bums to pat his record throughout his career. May fought upcomming prospects and future champs and solid boxers throughout his career. How does Manny go from lightweight and not having much power, then step up 3 to 4 weight classes in a small period of time and start knocking out quality fighters. Then after all that hype May approached to fight Manny to fight, despite how he felt about Arum and pretty much signed the contract to fight Manny but before doing so specifically asked for a cretain drug test and Manny backed out with Arum behind him making excuses about contract negotiations. Alost a year later Manny decides and Arum yapping Like A Little BITCH dog behind manny back. Anyway decides to call May out also around the time he fired his medical trainer…why so he can get cleaned? Soon after May called him out on the drug test Manny hasn’t knocked out anyone after. He couldn’t knockout Bradley who has the weakest chin in the world omg. He couldn’t knockout Marquez after 4 fights but instead gets ko’d. He couldn’t knockout Rios who also doesn’t have a chin just a heart same as Bradley..he couldn’t knockout Algeiri..very very suspect Manny is..you talk about what Manny did to Cotto and other fighters and he tko’d them. But that was him moving up quickly in weight and having all of a sudden powers until May called him out on his drug test and like I said after he couldn’t put anyone to sleep but himself..So you bandwagon jumpers riding Mannys cock, one day after all this crap and maybe when he retires he will admit to performance drug and I will laugh at how you people got fooled and how he Obama’d all of you.Manny needs May because he is getting broke. You people get mad at May about his personal but before he became born again righteous Manny the flake wasn’t any different from what May has done supposedly. May will counter Manny everything he throws his barrage of punches which if you notice he bounces straight in all the time hence the Marquez punch that put him to sleep. Lately May has been fighting toe to toe with heavy handed fighters with left hands and he figured them out…Manny needs to fight Alvarez and win which I’m sure he will be put to sleep again. But if he wins then he deserves to fight the hardest training and working man in the ring called may.

Its crazy to me how blind everyone is. Manny damn near busted up everyone hr fought from Margarito to Mosley and now he can’t knock out anybody. Wake up people.

Mayweather popped Hatton’s cherry…..the first to beat him. Hatton was also weight drained for the Pacquiao fight. Fact proven by Hatton never fighting at 140 again. Also it can be argued that Cotto would of never lost to Pacquiao if not for being so badly weight drained….also proven by the fact that Cotto fought 9 lbs heavier after. I think based on Common Opponents, Mayweather wins, and he also wins in real life. Period

You also have to remember Floyd fought Marquez at a catch weight of 144 while Marquez was fighting at 135. plsssssssss.dont compare THE PACMAN to a CHICKEN JOY FLOYD.its not equal its very deferent
MANNY is more competative an a GODS WARRIOR

  3. PacMom says:

Ehhhh Ricky is undefeated at 140 till manny … He’s clearly was not 147 fighter… Floyd took far too long to put him away, manny wanted to go sing at his after party so he ended it with two knock downs and probably the most beautiful left hook Ever landed.

  4. baby uno says:

I disagree with his analysis on Hatton vs Pacquiao. Overtraining or peaking too soon is not an excuse. He and Mayweather Sr. are veteran boxer and trainer respectively. I don’t think both of them will allow a boxer to peak too soon for a fight, whether its a big fight or not, especially of this magnitude. Hatton’s words in his autobiography are most probably just an excuse for his very embarassing loss against Pacquiao.

  5. Fer Ios says:

We have to give Floyd all positive comments favoring him highly so he will stop chickening out or ducking out!

  6. Noy says:

I beg to disagree. Using floyd’s fight against canelo is baseless. Manny and Canelo is completely different. Canelo is flat footed, only throws 1 or 2 punches at a time,is not that experienced, not a southpaw, predictable, has problems with slick opponents etc etc.

  7. Rmbrrmbr says:

Hatton destroyed Malinaggi after he fought Mayweather and before he fought Pacquiao. It’s not as if he was so down after losing to Floyd and fought Manny right after. He was still the best 140 pounder before Manny knocked him out.

  8. Rmbrrmbr says:

Whenever opponents try to box Floyd, that’s when he looks exceptionally great! That’s what a fat Marquez and Canelo Alvarez tried to do. Look how Maidana did even though he’s much slower.

  9. edel says:

the only chance tbe??? could beat Filipino greatest fighter of all time is to sucker punch him. BEWARE!!!

  10. dadadadamon says:

This is an incomplete analysis, if you want to call this an analysis….De La Hoya was drained, that makes a big differene, Hatton was drugged, cotto was drained….having a fighter drain himself to fight is not equal to fighting a fighter at full weight. Fighters, including the fight with Algeri, were asked to come down in weight to fight him, never a great idea….if Manny wants to fight Welterweight then fight at Welterweight…my only guess is he knows some of these fighters would have been different at natural undrained weights…I don’t want to hear the story how those guys need to come down because they are bigger, if that is the case he shouldn’t fight them. considering the weight differences in common fights and the mental instability of one of their common opponents. This is still a 50-50 fight because they never fought the same Fighters.

Also don’t let KOs fool you, different styles make for different results

Diminishing Pacman’s sensational win against Hatton based on anecdotal excuses is rubbish. Whatever Hatton does even he’s in the best shape of his life, his style is tailor-made for Pacquiao.

  13. Suga Rye says:

I don’t see how Manny’s performance against Hatton can be viewed as less impressive than Floyd’s. That was prolly Manny’s most impressive and perfect performance as an elite fighter.
Hatton told his fans, “you can bet your house on me, i’ll win.”, so he must have been confident going into the fight.
I think Hatton is just more embarrassed of the Pacquiao loss than his loss to Floyd… peaking too soon and all that BS, everyone who has lost will find reasons why it wasn’t enough. But it comes down to this, Hatton and Floyd Sr didn’t respect Manny and tried to trade with him right away.

Quote: Manny Pacquiao HAS to turn up. The REAL Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao.
The all guns blazing version, the version with power in both hands and power at welterweight.
A true 147 lbs with no catchweights involved.——-

I think Manny is still Manny. Still has power in both hands. U have to analyze the fighting styles of his opponents that went to distance.
Guys like Rios and Clottey who just covered up the entire fight, Algieri and Bradley, both with very good movement.
Shane and Barrera 2, both just wanted to survive.. so they kept moving away from Manny’s left.

Give Manny a guy who will come forward and trade with him and is not 30 pounds heavier on fight not, that guy will likely get knocked out!

Peaking too soon?! Its a B_Shit reason to loose a fight. Did he stopped training after peaking?
Pacquiao trained for two weeks for the belt of Ledwaba. He didnt even reach his peak then. He was busy auditioning to get a trainer then luckily Roach was the last and only one who potential.

WHAT A DUMB ANALYSIS !! Pacman destroyed all four common opponents. i’ll only give you Oscar that he’s drained but, Pacman was not backing up and won every single round.. Fraud vs Oscar was defensive and won on points.. big difference.. Mosley run away from Manny. JMM just got lucky after four fights.. two more rounds and he was good to go.. Look at how Hatton got destroyed by Pacman, standing toe to toe.. vs Fraud, Hatton just rushed so he got countered… again countered.. when was the last time you see Fraud destroy an opponent by attacking..

All time greats are aggressors – Hearns, duran, tyson, hagler, etc.. including Pacman..it’s harder to create and look for openings than just wait and counter like the Fraud Mayrunner.. also, it’s boring and not exciting to watch.. If all fighter dedicates their craft to be the best defensive fighter, we will see all Fraud type fighters and no one will watch boxing !!

I cannot think of a single complimentary or nice thing to say about that fucking hoodrat Fagweather !

I also cannot think of any way he can beat Pacquiao in reality or by speculation . Well that is unless he comes up with some stupid demand like 42 ounce gloves for Pacquiao and 8 ounce gloves for himself .

It’s woman beaters like Mayweather and Ray Rice that give the black male in todays society a BAD NAME !

Manny likes fighters who comes at him!

  19. droid adams says:

More PPV to Fraud Mayrunner because people want to see if he can still matchup with Paquiao.
Less PPV buys for Pacquiao coz’ they know that Paquiao will win and is not going to back out. Not going to duck…

I love the heart of Pac man but maywether has just as much heart & even more skills as long as maywether stay in top shape he will get around the aggression of Pac man & school him techically.

Hello everyone I want you to know that this writer is a crock of crap please let me explain. If you notice the writer is trying to be slick and use only the opponents that both fighters fought. If you’re going to do that then just keep it real and compare opponents for the entire career. You will get a different number. You can not judge half way to justify your argument it’s bs and you know it. May weather opponents that he fought is way higher percentage then Manny. Don’t forget Castillo twice in his prime, Corrales in his prime and undefeated, chop chop Damascus Corley in his prime, zab Juda in his prime, so add that first if you want facts but I’m quite sure your cleaver enough not to state fact. You are feeding the Manny based fans small portions of incomplete statements to justify Manny as a being the projected winner. If you want to keep it real just say hey boxing fans I support Manny I’m going to give you a half projection of facts to justify why he will win because Iiiiii like him best. That’s keeping it real so that way May weather fans no not to read your post for being bias.

  27. Raymond says:

First and foremost, I dont thing Floyd is scared of Manny. If all you people knew about Boxing like you think you. Just look things objectively.
When Manny turned Pro, he was Flyweight (106) lbs. Look at the size of his Head. Manny was knocked out twice early in his Career. If you look at Manny’s Head now, its much bigger.and his forehead is more Pronounced. Those are 2 things the happens when you take Steroids & HGH. Now that Freddy Roach kicked Ariza off Pacman’s team, he doesn’t take them anymore. Since then, he hasn’t had 1 KO.
When they fight, mark my word, Floyd will win a Very easy UD, but don’t be surprised if Floyd doesn’t TKO Manny in the late rounds. It will be close early, then round 6 or 7, Floyd will take over when Manny Tires. So all Manny Fans, my e-mail address is [email protected]. if you wanna bet, contact me there, setup a Paypal acct and let’s make wager.
    Floyd will beat Manny easily.

when its over, a lot of people will owe a whole lot of apologies.

You believe what you want to believe, I believe in facts and what my eyes tell me, not what my heart tells me to believe.

May 2nd……….. then goodbye, so called boxing fans, sorry Pacquiao fans.

You are an embarrassment to your country.

To all Floyd’s fan and firm believer that He is the best ever in all he do, Let me describe Floy’d’s style as I’ve already seen, He jabs, he does the shoulder roll defense, He breathe from his humungus mouth, open wide, and then He grabs and Hold and then He jabs away and Run backwards , and run al around the ring and then jab and miss and wrap around you and then jab away. Now tell me something’s I missed to describe his style? Oh yeah I almost forgot He cries a lot to the referee like He bit me ! Look, look! And then Jabs his opponent while not looking. What a “bullshit Actor”. He cries like a woman!
Hey Floyd where I came from we gut the balls of your kind and make them swallow it! If anyone of you thinks that the Manny Pacquiao you know is Done? Think again, The last 2 loses he had are both Bogus, the first one is from the first Bradley’s fight which he was robbed and was declared a bogus win. the second loss is from the 4th fight with Memo Heredia not JMM, did you see Marquez in fighting Pacquiao for 36 rounds if he knocked down Pacquiao even once? Then suddenly became Superman and muscular, another Bogus loss which is big question. So if manny Pacquiao and Floyd Duckweather collides I will bet my 2 balls that He , Floyd Mayweather jr will get his first defeat. Rest assured that Manny Pacquiao will pay Floyd Mayweather jr Big time no matter what Floyd can do and say now He is now trap in his own words and nowhere to go. Just make sure you show up and the rest of TMT!
