Pacquiao-Mayweather: Who wins the super fight based on common opposition – Part 1

40 Submitted by on Wed, 03 December 2014, 11:00

With Manny Pacquiao’s recent destruction of Chris Algieri, in which he scored six knockdowns, it has reignited the whole “Will They Wont They” scenario, regarding reigning p4p king Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather 47-0 (KO 26 – KO % 55.32) and 8 division world champion Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquaio 57-5-3 (KO 38 – KO % 59.38. To try and evaluate just how things may possibly play out between the two titans of the sport of boxing, lets take a close look at how they have fared against common opposition.

Firstly, we will access how both boxers got the win over ‘Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya.

Mayweather notched a controversial split decision on the scorecards against ‘Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya, back in 2007. Many had the fight swinging in favor of De La Hoya by a round, some had it as a draw and on the flip side many awarded the bout to Mayweather. It certainly was a close fight and the scoring in such a close fight is highly subjective. You could honestly not argue with the verdict going to either boxer by a round or two, because it was that close a fight and tricky to score.

Oscar De La Hoya was very strong in the opening exchanges and was the clear leader in the early portion of the contest. Floyd Mayweather — as Mayweather so frequently does — started to take over as he made his adjustments and started to dominate De La Hoya, as the fight wore on. “I thought I landed crisper punches,” said a clearly downcast De La Hoya. “I am the champion and you’ve got to do more than that to beat the champion.”

Oscar certainly threw a barrage of shots towards Mayweather. ‘Money’ did manage to slip many of them, but not all. There were some quality body shots landed by De La Hoya.

Pacquiao, in 2008, secured a TKO victory over De La Hoya, with the former Olympic gold medalist sitting on his stool at the end of the eighth round. The doctor called a halt to proceedings for damage sustained to the De La Hoya left eye. Pacquiao destroyed what was left of De La Hoya and sent ‘Golden Boy’ into retirement. This was to be Oscar De La Hoya’s final bout. He would not come out of retirement.

Rumors of Oscar being weight drained seemed to be evident as ‘Pacman’ trainer, Freddie Roach, said he noticed track marks on De La Hoya’s arms, as the fighters came to the center of the ring for instructions from the referee. Freddie Roach explained to the camera he seen IV marks, meaning that De La Hoya tried to rehydrate himself the night before the fight. Dropping the weight would have clearly taken a lot out of Oscar and even more so in the twilight of his career.

De La Hoya said of the loss against Pacquiao; “He’s just a great fighter. I have nothing bad to say about him, he prepared like a true champion,” De La Hoya continued. “I just don’t have it any more. My heart still wants to fight, but when you physically can’t respond, what can you do?”

With all of that said and done, Mayweather fought De La Hoya a year and a half before Pacquiao did. Was there enough time for Oscar to decline and not to have anything left in the tank against Pacquiao? Possibly. Then again, did Mayweather fight a great version of De La Hoya himself? Probably not. Even with the rehydration issues involving De La Hoya, you would have to favor ‘Pacman.’

I lean towards Pacquiao, as to who came out on top over ‘Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya.

1-0 Pacquiao

Next up we take a look at how both pugilists fared against Shane Mosley.

Floyd Mayweather faced off against ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley back in May 2010. ‘Money’ was seriously tested in the second round. The big punching Mosley, landed a thumping right hand on Mayweather, which caused the Michigan born fighters legs to dip. Mayweather was smart, took the clinch, weathered the storm, regained his senses and must have thought to himself “Okay, that wont be happening again” in a hurry. That proved to be the case. Floyd Mayweather went on to secure an easy unanimous victory on all scorecards.

judge: Dave Moretti 119-109 | judge: Robert Hoyle 118-110 | judge: Adalaide Byrd 119-109

Manny Pacquaio took on Shane Mosley in May 2011, a year later than Mayweather.

‘Pacman’ decked Mosley in the third round. This made Mosley aware of the power that Pacquiao possessed. Mosley would not venture anything further and essentially settled to go the distance. Pacquiao was not under any threat whatsoever for the remaining rounds. The Filipino slugger cruised to a unanimous points verdict on the scorecards.

Judge: Duane Ford 120-107 | Judge: Dave Moretti 120-108 | Judge: Glenn Trowbridge 119-108.

Both Mayweather and Pacquiao secured a wide unanimous points victory against Mosley. You would have to give the edge to Pacquiao, due to his knock down of Mosley in the third and Mosley rocking Mayweather in the second round. Not much else to split either man really, except those two factors.

2-0 Pacquiao

Next up we view the bouts both men have against Mexican, Juan Manuel ‘Dinamita’ Marquez.

Mayweather came back from a long lay off to face Marquez. Floyd Mayweather actually retired after his bout against Ricky Hatton back in 2007. The fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, was Floyd’s first in the ring action in over two years.

Marquez had never before fought above 135 lbs and had fought at 130 lbs as recently as March 2008. Mayweather had campaigned at 147 lbs since 2005. A catchweight bout was agreed.

The fight was scheduled to take place at an agreed upon weight of 144 lbs. Marquez weighed in at 142 lbs, while Mayweather tipped the scales at 146 lbs, two pounds over the agreed limit. Floyd Mayweather didn’t seem to be the bigger man when the fighters both weighed in but come fight night, Mayweather seemed significantly the larger man. ‘Money’ pretty much totally outclassed ‘Dinamita’ in the ring and claimed a landslide victory on the scorecards. Mayweather even had Marquez on the canvas once, in round four.

After Mayweather’s self imposed lay off/retirement, Floyd looked just as good as he had previously, in his fight against Englishman, Ricky Hatton. Marquez was of course a man who was two weight classes below Mayweather at the time of the fight.

Scorecards for the bout.
Judge: Burt A. Clements 120-107 | Judge: Dave Moretti 119-108 | Judge: Bill Lerch 118-109.

Manny Pacquiao, has faced Juan Manuel Marquez, four times.

Pacquiao vs Marquez I.

In the first encounter between the two warriors, Pacquiao sent Marquez to the canvas three times in the opening round. Marquez outboxed Pacquiao for the remainder of the bout which ended in a controversial, split-decision draw.

The final scores were 115–110 for Marquez, 115–110 for Pacquiao and 113–113.

Judge Burt A. Clements (who scored the bout 113–113) later admitted to making an error on the scorecards, because he had scored the first round as 10–7 in favor of Pacquiao, instead of the standard 10–6 for a three-knockdown round. So Pacquiao by rights should have claimed a split decision victory, had the error not been made.

Scorecards for the bout.
Judge: John Stewart 115-110 | Judge: Burt A. Clements 113-113 | Judge: Guy Jutras 110-115.

Pacquiao vs Marquez II.

The highly anticipated rematch between the two men took place in March 2008. The fight was billed as “Unfinished Business.”

As the fight unfolded, Marquez landed the most punches at a higher percentage, however, the decisive factor proved to be a third-round knockdown, in which Marquez was dropped by a Pacquiao left hook. Manny Pacquiao edged a split decision win on the scorecards. The decision was once again viewed as controversial by the public, with most pundits and fans scoring the fight to Marquez.

Judge: Duane Ford 115-112 | Judge: Jerry Roth 112-115 | Judge: Tom Miller 114-113.

Pacquiao vs Marquez III

With the two previous bouts between Pacquiao and Marquez being very nip and tuck, the fight fans and no doubt Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, will have wanted a true conclusion to the affair to be finally settled, once and for all.

A lot of fight fans had Marquez winning the previous two contests. The trilogy was always going to take place. The bout marked the second time Marquez jumped from Lightweight to Welterweight (a catchweight of 144 lbs.)

According to Compubox, Marquez was outlanded by Pacquiao on an average of 3 punches per round (14 to 11 punches landed). Pacquiao also unleashed 142 punches more than Marquez and landed 38 more punches, connecting at a higher percentage rate in power shots than Marquez. Although Marquez landed at a higher rate in jabs, the Mexican was out landed 59 to 38.

Even though Pacquiao won a close majority decision, Marquez’s fans in the audience believed ‘Dinamita’ had won the fight. Items were hurled into the ring among a cacophony of boos. Marquez and trainer Nacho Beristain were sure they had been part of another robbery at the hands of Pacquiao. They left the ring in protest as the decision was announced. The pair did not want to hang around for any post fight interviews or any photos. So, after three contests, there was still no clear winner in the eyes of the fight fans.

judge: Dave Moretti 113-115 | Judge: Robert Hoyle 114-114 | Judge: Glenn Trowbridge 112-116.

Pacquiao vs Marquez IV.

The first two rounds were very close, neither man landing anything significant aside from a Pacquiao right hook. You would have to give the first two rounds to Manny Pacquiao. In the third round, Marquez landed an array of left hooks to the body from distance, attempting to negate Pacquiao’s movement. The plan from Marquez paid off instantly as Marquez feinted again to the body, before landing a looping overhand right that dropped Pacquiao for the first time in their four fights. Pacquiao beat the count but was reluctant to engage for the remainder of the round.

Freddie Roach reprimanded his fighter between rounds to duck under the overhand right, instead of pulling away, as Pacquiao backed off from the knockdown punch. Pacquiao came out in the fourth round having recovered from the knockdown. Manny spent most of the round looking for his shots, with little joy. Marquez however, struck a vast amount of signature right hand counters, banking ‘Dinamita’ the round.

Round five — Ring Magazine’s ‘Round of the Year’ — began with Pacquiao landing several solid left hands. Pacquiao then floored Marquez with a straight left hand. Marquez beat the count and replied with a huge straight right on the chin that staggered Pacquiao. In the final minute of the round, both men exchanged blows before Pacquiao landed several unanswered punches, the main shot being a right hook that buckled Marquez’s knees and severely broke the Mexicans nose. A very bloodied Marquez stayed away from the Filipino slugger for the remainder of the round. A smart move at this stage. ‘Pacman’ seemed angry.

The sixth round started with Pacquiao, catching Marquez numerous times. The round was coming to a close with the face of Marquez worse for ware, extremely bloodied. Pacquiao backed Marquez against the ropes and threw a double jab, Marquez ducked under the second jab and unleashed a ‘Hail Mary’ overhand right that sent Manny Pacquiao crashing to the canvas, face first. Pacquiao remained motionless as Kenny Bayless went over to start the count. Bayless soon realized that Pacquiao was not getting up and he waved the fight off.

Marquez celebrated wildly, running around the ring and leaping onto the ropes in the corner, exclaiming his joy to the fans. Both men were highly complimentary of each other after the bell, which was great sign of sportsmanship.

Scores at time of the stoppage.
Judge: Adalaide Byrd 46-47 | Judge: Steve Weisfeld 46-47 | Judge: John Keane 46-47.

Will we see the fifth installment of this epic tussle? With everything taken into account with Manny’s four battles and Floyd’s one encounter with Juan Manuel Marquez, even without the knockout victory for Marquez, it’s clear to all that Pacquaio struggled to decisively claim a true victory over Marquez. Mayweather easily dealt with Marquez, although the Mexican had jumped up two weight classes to face ‘Money.’ You would have to give Mayweather the edge.

2-1 Pacquiao

After three common opponents, Manny Pacquiao has pulled into the lead, but there are still 2 more fighters left to compare and decide who would come up on top in this long awaited super fight.

I don’t think common opposition will determine the actual outcome. I am a Pacman fan but I really believe Mayweather will win by points. It’s also the reason whi I don’t understand why Mayweather keeps making excuses. At first he only wanted random blood testing but after Pacquiao agreed to a demand he comes up with new ones. He even made a demand that Pacquiao should sign with Mayweather promotions. He makes demands that any sane person will not agree with.

    • PacMom says:

I agree… Somewhat.. At this stage…. Even a decent manny Pacquiao could rip apart what mayweather has left…. I just use the awkwardness of maidana for instance… Maidana is several dimensions slower than manny Pacquiao…. People see a midget on tv but when your in the ring with him it’s an entire dif story…. He’s one tough SOB to keep off u… Mayweather had to run around a lot during maidana, like a lot… And the first time he fought maidana, THAT mayweather would have a lot of problems with Pacquiao…. The demands are ridiculous. I put it this way… If Michael Jordan and Lebron James were in the same Situation… & lebron wouldn’t want to face mike for so & so reasons… What would US the public think? I feel floyd would def have done better 5 years ago that he will against Pacquiao today… Because manny Pacquiao isnt a Marcos maidana, he’s way above Marcos…. I just hate the fact that he literally has so many negatives about his lifestyle and fighting…. There’s
Never ever been a fighter who has made the business of boxing seem like a joke.

    • Bardagul says:

Money, even an insane person won’t agree to that particular demand of joining the maynever . promotions. That’s tantamount to saying that he does’nt want to face pacquiao. As long as he suffers from pacphobia, the fight would never happen.

    • Anonymous says:

don’t believe everything you hear especially coming out of Floyd or arum mouth, Floyd all about money and so is arum, they, yes they not Floyd by himself been playing this song and dance with the boxing fans for at least 3 years now all about hate and ego and if you believe anything different than you just allowed yourself to bamboozle

    • Mantoy says:

Exactly because floyd himself doubted his skills when it comes to pacman, he is 99% sure he could beat the pacman but that lingering 1% is enough to trouble his psyche.

    • David stewart says:

just see the volume of punches they throw…..you can see who will lead the fight….mayweather combo vs THE GREAT PACMAN combo…..who wins by points?….greater accuracy of pacman will counter the defense of the ducker…..

  2. OneTonMan says:

Mayweather’s ego is second to none in sports. I’ve seen arrogant athletes all my life but Mayweather tops them all. After watching Mayweather throughout his career, I saw an individual who values “control” more than anything else. He just wants to control everything whether it be his boxing opponents, his father, his wife, his promoter, his interviewer, his acquaintances, EVERYBODY. He just enjoys having the last word. Money and power seems to be his adrenalin high, not fights. Always mentioning his “perfect” score, always having himself photographed counting his cash. Can’t imagine what he will do to the people if he ever becomes president. First law of the land will be “I’ma tell you that thou shall worship me, the best ever.”

  3. PACMANUSA says:

That hoodrat nigga is scared period !

The question if they fight is if that cheating nigga has the judges in his pocket like Bradley did in the first Pacquiao fight !

  4. jackechobravo says:

In my understanding, floyd is pacman’s fan.How will he fight his idol?

  5. reyocs says:

    PACMAN BY T.K.O

  6. shizbasketz says:

Floyd has NOTHING to prove to no one especially pacman let him fight the last 3 fights floyd has fought and i bet he comes out 0-3 pacman cant beat canelo, nor do i think he can beat maidana and maidana wants to fight him stop chasing floyd and fight people who want to fight you and stop getting knocked the fuck out lol… these weirdos on here dont no shit about boxing its win and dont lose hit nd do.t get hIt(knocked the fuck out) yet he deserve a fight foh he just fought a bum floyd would trash pacman last opponopponent like he did tbe late great gatti.

    • Hung Lo says:

@Shizbasketz… It is you who doesn’t know a thing about boxing… If PacMan fights both Canelo and Maidana, both boxers will suffer multiple knockdowns or a Knockout even.. Both fighters fight in a way favorable to Manny’s style… In a business sense, it is bullshit to host a fight against both fighters given the fact that both haven’t done anything significant lately… Another thing is, no one would want to see the fight… Everyone wants PacMan vs Maywether… Heck even PacMan wants to fight maywether.. Billionaires around the world especially in UAE have chipped in close to 200 mil as fight purse to make this fight happen…. It seems like Maywether is the only person who doesn’t want this fight to happen… Why do you think he doesn’t want to?? Coz he is scared that is why… Your idol is scared!!!… The guy you look up to isn’t shit…

    • Anonymous says:

floyd is quick and great…the only way to let this two warrior to fight is to put then in one room let them get hungry then suddenly put one roasted chicken in the middle…let if be the game of survival…

    • krisper says:

Did you just read what you wrote. You saying Manny should fight people who want to fight him but Mayweather shouldn’t fight Manny who wants to fight him? And stop getting knocked out ? Which happen against a guy who fought him 4 times . bound to atleast happen once. Yes Mayweather did great against canelo but you can say his performance with maidana was horrible . and people always told manny he couldn’t and he proved everyone wrong (only 8 weight division champion) .

  7. Anonymous says:

Shizbasketz…how can u say floydie is nothing to prove anymore? if floydie retire with zero loss without fighting pacman he can stil in hall of fame of course he fought many great fighter but without facing the rival of his era the pacman and thats the big question why he did not fight his rival?!!!..is he afraid to the smaller guy the pacman? Shizbasketz il question you something…what is better you dont lose single fight after retiring because ur fraid to face the rival of ur era because you put or balls on ur throat or in the forehead?.. pacman in the other hand is 8 division champion the only fighter accomplish eversince the boxing starts and fighting big fighter without fear!!! compare them Shizbasketz who is the more credible of the two pacman or floydiegay?

  8. Anonymous says:

Shizbasketz…you know i believe pacman decline a little in his killing intinct in the ring… like example from holdaper he transporm to become snatcher… but i believe if he is going to face floyd you can see the most notorious criminal in the ring of pacman as killing instinct is concern..pacman performance in the ring aginst floyd would be like you did not kill a pig and suddenly discover it was dead then slash his troat then sell in the market…you call it double dead..

  9. Ángeles aka Maxxx says:

My trainer the Legendary DT and I would put it like this… “History is most qualified to reward all research. The history of both fighters is this. Pacquiao is going to come in shape and ready to fight without a shadow of a doubt. He has done so successfully over the last several recent years. UNTIL you look at his fights with Juan Manuel Marquez in particular which BOTH fighters share a history of fighting against. Pacquiao had 3 fights with him 2 of which were life and death for Pacquiao leaving Pacquiao knocked out in one of those two. The other, Pacquiao won not necessarily that much of a margin as he should have but it’s a win…. At the end of the day Pacquiao WILL come to fight but he gets hit too easily, something like a Philippino Marciano just without the Rocks’ chin or record, he fights with his face as well as his fists. Mayweather now on the other hand has fought Juan Manuel Marquez only once and outclassed him 12 out of 12 rounds… OK maybe not 12 but at least 10 or 11 lol that’s me the fighter talking by saying 12 for 12.. But yea… now the history of Floyd Mayweather is this… Floyd’s has had his share of almost close to life or death bouts as far as his UNBLEMISHED boxing récord is concerned. He’s been “tested” to say the least against Castillo TWICE, he’s been tested with Zab Judah early, Miguel Cotto early, Demarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley early, and MOST CLEARLY AND CLEANLY against Sugar Shane Mosley making Floyd do the wildest dance ever seen ANYONE make him do EVER. But EVEN THEN you saw another part of his training that we seldom see from him because we’re so use to seeing him dominate opponents. And as a result of that we dismiss this part of his pedigree. No one in a fight, street fight or any other fight, is gonna get stunned and want to await the finishing blow that most likely will follow the micro mano second your opponent realizes you’re stunned. We see MOST fighters, good AND GREAT, panic and — USE a defense mechanism BUT OFTEN TIMES BECA– USE OF THE PANIC 1ST THEY CHOSE THE WRONG DEFENSE. they will backpeddle when they should side step or weave, they try and parry when they should be blocking or vice versa and so forth. Mayweather realized he was in trouble and held on when he should have. Doing anything else in front of Mosley whether it be back pedaling, or blocking, or standing toe to toe would have most likely yielded a knockdown at least. A VETERAN MOVE due to VETERAN thinking. And you don’t think that well as a veteran without putting yourself in that type of predicament DAILY with the best upcoming and raw qualified sparring talent to whoop up on his ass every sparring day or at least try. It can also be argued that he lost a few of the early rounds in the 1st Marcos Maidana fight. But again whoever who has applied pressure we have seen him respond accordingly whether he needed to backpeddle, cover up, hold on, stand and fight or counter then run, he’s done it and done so at the right junctures minimizing the damage the one or two clean or glancing blows that landed would do at the time during the fight allowing him to recover come back and fight some more either in the same rounds or future rounds to come”….As Paul alluded to, ultimately both are great fighters but one consistently fights great. We’ll see come fight night

  10. Rom says:

Based on common opposition, i will not wait for the 2nd part of the analysis but would summarize it at 4-1 Pacquiao winning it. The remaining common opposition between them is ricky hatton and miguel cotto which were both demolished by pacman in a more convincing fashion than mayweather, hence the 4-1 edge for pacman. However, should both men finally meet next year, I would have pacman winning by unanimous decision, simply because floyd will not engage and would keep on defending himself just like what clottey and algeiri did. Most people would see it the other way around but pacman is likewise fast and would not get intimidated by floyd’s tactic. For me it’s Pacman by UD.

    • Ángeles aka Maxxx says:

I’ll say this. You’re dead wrong. BUT at least you put up a better calculated argument than all the other Pacquiao idiots out there. Don’t go off who you like our who sum girl likes. State what church feel and leave something to substantiate it!

      • jecko says:

I think rom statement can be substantiated and where no idiots, YOU are the DUMBASS here.Do you really believe that gaynigga is not goin to backpedall once he get hit?How can a judge give a round to gaynigga if he is on defense mode,it will be like a clottey or algieri or a mosley fight,
a TOTAL SHUTOUT..yes he can throw his jab and figure out how to throw the overhand right but not until it will be too late coz pacman has an awkward, leftie stance and we know the gaynigga hates lefties coz he is susceptible by being hit by a left bomb.Take note it will not be a jab but BOMBS of punches that will be coming his way.Now did it satisfy you???

This whole UAE offer. It wont happen there.

Twofold…..Mayweather is contacted to fight at the MGM Grand & Xylocaine is LEGAL to use in the State of Nevada.

Why do you think Floyd fights there?

The fight will ONLY happen in Vegas.

    That much you can guarantee.

So all the stuff you are hearing about other countries and venues, just dismiss all of that.

  16. Money says:

Lets not forget, Mayweather signed the contract to fight Manny back in the day when both in their primes. Manny wouldn’t take the test back then. So anyone who says that Mayweather was ducking Pacman, is, well, a bit foolish, kind of blind, deaf and dumb.

If he was prepared to face a prime Manny who was laying people out and smashing people up, he has nothing to fear about getting knocked out now does he. Have a close look at things from a neutral stance.

Add this to the mix…The whole thing has gone on that long, I don’t care what people think about facing each other in their primes, the fact is this fight has built up that much of a crescendo the world will come to a halt if and when the fight happens……Floyd’s name is Money and he is a smart businessman…..Is holding off smart business, or is it what you believe you know? Hmmmm?

Also add that Mayweather looked on the way down vs Cotto, then stepped it up against Canelo. Mayweather then looked on the way down against Maidana. Now, do you think Mayweather would take Manny as lightly as he did do for Cotto and Maidana?

Its all about levels of opposition.

You do what you have to do with what id facing you.

Listen, say what you want about Floyd, but he is one of the smartest fighters to ever step in the ring. Many takes too many shots from weird off balance angles and when Floyd catches him with that check hook counter it’s going to be all she wrote. Pac-Man is bound to become frustrated and open himself to a big come and Floyd won’t miss.

You and your team did a wonderful ways in avoiding contenders like De la Hoya, Moseley, Cotto, Margarito, Williams, Martinez, Pacquiao etc.. And then you decided to fight lightweights and most of Pacquiao’s leftover and that partial retirement just to avoid Cotto, Margaritoand Pacquiao in fact you avoided them for 2 years, since then the quality of opponents you had were so pathetic and the results of you every fights were so Boring. As avid boxing fan I stopped buying your PPV bogus fights. I resent to see your punk attitude especially bragging your wealth and money. I tell you , I never met anybody who is so boastful and full of it the way you are. You are the best ever in all that you are boastful for,I am not in a habit of Wishes but I admit you ere the only one in the world I wish that for and I don’t regret it. I still believe that there are few remaining ways deep inside of you that you will change your evil ways for your own sake. Only then you will find peace and Happiness to yourself. There ‘s still time and a lot of your fans are watching and waiting. Be strong, Be Brave, Don’t be afraid. Even in honest defeat you’ll find peace of mind!

You are the best ever in all that you are boastful for,I am not in a habit of bad Wishes but I admit you ere the only one in the world I wish that for and I don’t regret it.
