Paulie Malignaggi: “Miguel Cotto is very dangerous, I don’t think he gets enough credit for the way he fought the first fight with Mayweather.”

‘The Magic Man’ Paulie Malignaggi has not stepped in the ring since his April 19th bout with former champion, Shawn Porter. The fight started with Malignaggi working from the outside and trying to establish the jab, but quickly turned when Porter dragged Paulie into a rough fight and knocked the former 2 division champion down and eventually out. Since the defeat many have wondered if we have seen the last of Malignaggi inside the ring.

In part 2 of my “On The Ropes” interview with Paulie Malignaggi, I get his views on the future of Floyd Mayweather and if he thinks we will finally see Mayweather-Pacquiao. Paulie talks about the differences in the Manny Pacquiao of today, and the Pacquiao of the past. Additionally, Paulie gives his thoughts on his own boxing career and if we might see him enter the ring once again. Here is what Paulie Malignaggi had to say.

Jenna J: Floyd only has two fights left in his contract. Do you think the time is right now for him to fight Manny Pacquiao?

Paulie Malignaggi: It’s possible, who knows. I guess for the sake of the hype that’s been around that fight, why not make it? Personally I think if you really know your boxing, you’re not really that excited about that fight, but I think guys like Thurman and Khan in my opinion have a real shot at beating Floyd Mayweather. They would also probably beat Manny Pacquiao as well.

At this point we’re in 2014 going into 2015, I think those two fighters especially have a shot at probably beating both guys, more than likely. The way Floyd looked, I don’t think he’s gonna make some real improvements in his next fight and it’s unfortunate, but it’s probably part of the aging process. I think Amir and Thurman are real, real threats to Floyd Mayweather right now, and obviously to Pacquiao as well. I think they’re a threat to both guys.

Jenna J: In your opinion, what’s the biggest difference between the Manny Pacquiao of 2014 and the Manny Pacquiao of 2010, when the Floyd Mayweather fight was being hyped the most?

Paulie Malignaggi: I think there’s a lot of differences. I think we can all speculate with what the big differences were. At this point there’s a lot less explosiveness in Pacquiao, we’ll say that.

Jenna J: What did you see in his last fight with Timothy Bradley? What’s different in Pacquiao in terms of the way that he goes out there?

Paulie Malignaggi: He just doesn’t look as explosive to me anymore. The Pacquiao hype train is based really on about two or three years of his career, it’s nothing based on before then and there’s nothing based on after that because nothing before or after that was very impressive about Pacquiao. It’s based on about a two or three year run Manny Pacquiao had where he looked like Superman. I think everybody is holding on to that.

He’s never looked like that when he’s done random drug testing, so I don’t know what all the fuzz is about. At 35 years old, you’re probably not gonna see that anyway. The fight doesn’t really tickle my fancy like it does for some other people. I think Amir Khan and Keith Thurman beat Pacquiao and I think they have a more than an above average chance to beat Floyd Mayweather as well, this current Floyd Mayweather anyway.

Jenna J: Miguel Cotto is the middleweight champion of the world, do you think Floyd would have interest in going after that just for the prestige of going after a middleweight title belt?

Paulie Malignaggi: You never know. I think Miguel Cotto is very dangerous, I don’t think he gets enough credit for the way he fought the first fight with Mayweather. I think he fought a very dangerous fight — I only had it 7-5 for Floyd Mayweather, 115-113. I think when we talk about Mayweather’s tougher fights of his career, I don’t think Cotto gets enough credit for the performance he had that night. That was a really tough fight for Floyd.

I don’t see Floyd giving him a rematch. Cotto is one of those guys that he hits so hard and he’s actually really good that if you’ve beaten him, you’d rather see him in your rear view mirror and not have to deal with him again. I’ve been in the ring with him and I don’t think I want to see him again, and he beat me. I don’t know, I think when you deal with a guy with that kind of punching power, you’re just kind of glad he’s behind you.

Jenna J: The last time we saw you in the ring was the fight with Shawn Porter. The fight didn’t go the way anyone expected. What are your reflections on that fight?

Paulie Malignaggi: It happens, we all have bad nights. We’ll see if I can get myself together and make another run at it or if I’ll just stick to commentating. I kind of wonder to myself every day, what I really want to do, we’ll see.

Jenna J: You have a lot of fans out there who would like to see you back in the ring. What kind of fights would you be looking out there for yourself? Would you look for a tune up first or would you want to go out there with a belt holder?

Paulie Malignaggi: I don’t know. I think if I was to fight again, I would want to earn it. I’ve never really gone right back in to a big fight if I lost a big fight like that. I don’t mind going down the ladder and getting myself back together because it also reestablishes my self belief when I do that.

I’ve done that ever time, where I’ve taken a loss that wasn’t so good for my career and I’ve gone back down the ladder and worked my way back up. Maybe not slowly, but maybe taking one or two lesser fights just to get that self belief back in me, and that’s really what it is with me, it’s about that confidence. I definitely wouldn’t want to jump right into a big fight, I don’t think I deserve that.

I’ve been offered a shot at Leonard Bundu, the European champion who is also Italian, so it could be an interesting fight if I took that. I don’t know, I haven’t really made up my mind, I don’t know what I want to do. I’m eligible for the EBU title because I have Italian citizenship but I’m not quite sure.

  1. glen says:

Paulie still feel the shock he received from Porter. Porter mauled him that affected his brain.

  2. Ands says:

Why are you interviewing this bum? He couldn’t even win his fights.

  3. floydcott says:

wtf! I really don’t understand why jenna wasting his time to this girly paula, this nonsense gay has suffer concussion in his last fight so he really don’t know who is he and he really don’t know wat his saying. Show ur evidence that manny get caught with ped. Poor man.

    • It’s because Jenna is one of Mayweather’s paid medias/supporters. Haven’t you noticed that she’s always interviewing people on side of Mayweather’s? I’ll tell you, it may look like a real interview but it’s not. The scripted interview started questions related to the interviewed person’s career. But on the later it will go down defaming PACMAN and makes Mayweather look nice.

By the way, ontheropesboxing.com and fightnews.com are also Mayweather’s hyping paid medias. It’s up to you to believe.

      • Rick says:

I won’t be surprised if Jenna turns out to be on the payroll of Floyd Jr. you’re making a valid point.

  4. artjd says:

Lady Paulie just can’t move on, sooooo bitter!!!!!!!

  5. abee says:

Paulie Malignaggi WAS all mouth, no power and average talent. I will pit Donaire against him even with that weight disparity, i bet my house that he ‘ ll never have that chance to beat talented guys. And I bet a 45 year old Pacquaio will give a whipping to a talentless 25 year Malignaggi. Since 2009, he was saying all the negatives against Pacquiaio.

  6. Ben thompson says:

paulie collie oooolie……. Come on man thats bad giving a bad comment about the guy that gives boxing alive again…boxing is dead when pacquaio hang up his gloves… Theres no more entertaining boxer than pacquaio…

  7. Xposer says:

Paulie Malinaggi should not be commenting on any boxing event because he holds grudges to any fighter he hates and does not do fare commentaries at all because of it. In this case against Pacquiao. He was rumored to have a chance to fight Pacquiao before, but because of his poor marketability, and was underestimated by Pacquiao to beat Hatton, he got upset and felt disrespected by Pacman. Since then he began his black propaganda against Pacquiao. Here’s the link of that story: http://www.boxing247.com/weblog/news.php?p=22342&more=1

    • Mateng says:

Sour graping, very bitter pillow puncher got exposed. I almost forgot about it. Good work xposer. Everybody try to watch the link xposer provided.

  8. nick wolf says:

Paulie should shut his jealous vagina… he sounds like a homo..

  9. Glassjaw khan ran away from maidana and held on for dear life, no way he beats pac. Paulie got beat up by Porter pac’s sparring partner

  10. capt.cc says:

Such a dumb views, he’s not fit to be a boxing commentator….

  11. Mateng says:

He simply wants a fight with PAC. Paulis asking, How come his fellow New Yorker Algieri who’s a new kid in the block get to fight pacquiao? I’m way more popular than this guy. The answer here Pauli is simple, algeiri Is unbeaten, nice looking and well educated, has a never say die attitude which translates to marketability potential given the opportunity. While you, you’re everybody’s bitch, everybody has beaten you and you can’t hurt a fly. You have a big mouth and a soft fist, why don’t you just put both of your fist in your big mouth.

  12. pentangeli says:

paulie, paulie, paulie.. ya caynt force your personal circumstances into your analysis because yours is unique case. ya don got power in dem dukes. ya got girl power so zip it, ya only sound bitter. as quick as you can throw them you’d think you could knock down a fly but ya caynt. i think you outta call out floyd for that great big nest egg since you guys are guaranteed NOT to hurt each other. i think he’ll take it since you’ve always been a good draw yourself. so start taunting him tell him he’s got pussy power, and you’re stronger than him. lol.

but going back to pacquiao, you of all people (being a boxing analyst) should realize the reason paq is not knocking out opponents is that they learned to keep their distance and rarely engaged and those that didn’t were ko/tko’ed. the smart ones who kept distance were lucky to get away just being beaten black and blue. THAT’S THE FACT!!

i was beginning to like your commentaries but you can’t make ignorant and stupid comments like that unless you only wish to be controversial and not a smart analyst.

  13. adan says:

paulie is an empty guy, he isn’t a good fighter just a loud one. not in the stratus of an elite fighter. guy is a gay. even with all those steroids he ingested nothing seems to really make him a little better, just plain nothing even on steroids.

  14. Anonymous says:

Anna Julaton can knock Paulie out in the very first round.

  15. Jeff says:

Paulie just want attention from Pac.. There’s no way u can have a figth from pac.. Lol ! Stupid homo!!!

  16. jimmy jim says:

manny was explosive against marquez he was pouring it on , but got ko’d .. since then is wen hes not as explosive ..

  17. Jeff says:

“I am really angry at the complete lack of respect Manny Pacquiao has been giving me. I mean, he’s been talking about fighting Hatton next, when Hatton hasn’t even got past me yet! I’ve worked very hard to get where I am in my career, and for Pacquiao to completely take that away from me by disrespecting me – that makes me really want to punish him after I beat Hatton.”……….<——– ambisyoso!!!

  18. El_Critika says:

    paulie….nyahahahahahahaha!

  19. John says:

Well manny never looked stupid like you even though he’s not in a superman level like the way you think about him Pauline.

  20. Louie says:

Paulie said he don’t mine going down the ladder. Maybe he meant staying down there LOL!
How would you go down the ladder when you’ve never been up there????
You’re not even a good boxing analyst.
    You SUCK!

  21. This man (paulie)soundslike a dirty politician trying to win an elections with his dirty tactics, the truth even juan marquez would not agree with him. I commended marquez for chasing manny until he finally won with a bonus k.o.if pac on ped he would never got k.o. Paulie should not be a commentator..accusing someone without any single evidence is act of ignorant..

  22. Brett says:

He also hasn’t looked like Superman since becoming a politician.

  23. Jakolero says:

Paula Maglipussi…all mouth & zero power. I love seeing the a-wipe getting KTF’ed down & out.

  24. Mike Spikoli says:

He works for Sowtime, and that ladies is who writes for him. So don’t get butt hurt from his scripted answers. Being boxing fans and all I would have though you all would have understood that by now.

    • Exactly! It’s been ALL THE TIME she interviewed people that were on side of Mayweather. Defaming a true legend which is PACMAN. The only PACMAN in boxing and the only 8 division world champion in entire boxing history. Yet PACMAN stays humble because he knew the world would recognized his achievements in time.

    • Louie says:

      Agree with you.

  25. STFU Pauline you’re washed up, done!! Now you’re staying afloat with leeching on to Manny with BS to keep your name alive

  26. Bardagul says:

Paulie is a Pac hater since the start. He’s been accusing pac a steroid user with no evidence, trying hard to catch pac’s attention to no avail. His hatred intensified when he got mauled big time by a Pac ex-sparring partner, Porter.

  27. Bardagul says:

Malignobodi will be more depressed after his fellow new yorker homie, algierrie, gets ktfo in november. Paulie should be put in a suicide watch right after that figth.

  28. PAC U PAULIE says:

What if Paula M is on ROIDS, will it make her SUPERWOMAN?????????

  29. Rick says:

As a boxer who thinks very highly of his skills, he just can’t swallow that Manny just totally ignores him, As always, never fails to downplay Pacquiao skills, and predictably throws his PED allegations. The bitterness and hatred gets deeper when even boxers who sparred with Pacquiao are TKO’ing him left and right. Remember Khan and Porter? Hatton TKO’d him and Cotto beat him by UD, but against Pacquiao those two were annihilated. That meant his skills are below par compared to Manny and he just can’t take it.

  30. kissjonez says:

    Poor Paulie.. LOL!

Just give up the hating on Pacquaio brah! Sooooo obvious! You’ve been hating on him longer than Floyd!
Atleast Floyd was once a “HUGE” Pacquaio fan up until Pacquaio reach Floyds weight division! LOL!

First off, who was the last one that gave Pacquaio a brawl aside from “SUPER” Marquez?
I think it was Margarito and look what happen?
After Margarito, the rest either ran all night or covered up all night or fought smart & ran all night!

After Margarito the rest ran and tried to survive!

Clottey – Covered himself all night – is that Pacquaios fault?
Mosely – Ran all night after he got knocked down on 3rd round.
Rios – Covered himself all night and was happy that he proved the world that Pacquaio couldn’t knock him down! LOL! (Lame excuse)

Bradley – Ran all night and thats why he hurt his leg from running and moving all the time!

Margarito banged with PACQUAIO but was too big to get KO’ed by Pacquaio!
Dela Hoya too big as well but almost got KOed in the later rounds. Remember he held the rope and Dela Hoya didn’t ran!

Cotto – Banged with Pacquaio and it was EPIC but later Cotto just tried to survive but his face was battered badly!

CHRIS ALGEIRI WILL RUN ALL NIGHT!

  31. Steely says:

Bradley and Marquez are A-list fighters who Pac fought in his last three fights. IMHO, Bradley is far superior than any fighter Floyd had ever fought, bar none. I believe at this stage of their career, Bradley will beat Floyd, and Paulie is disappointed and shocked that Pac did not KO these two future HOF?
    You’re full of it Paula!

    • I also believe that Bradley can beat Mayweather. Bradley has the speed and footwork, has long stamina, has the intelligence, and has much much power than Mayweather. That’s why Mayweather won’t fight him.

  32. pizarrojose says:

I think Malign aggi is maligning Pacquiao because he is jealous of Pacquiao accomplishment. He is insisting Pacquiao is on steroid when his only proof is the words of the Mayweather in which they were sued by Pacquiao where they settled out of court by paying Pacquiao a large amount. He is always repeating this accusation every time he has the oppurtunity without offering proof. He is saying now that Pacquiao is not explosive anymore since the drug testing, not saying that Pacquiao got old but it is ok with Flloyd that he got old. Pacquiao last few fights is in 147 lbs. division where he fights much bigger guys than he is. He is a natural 126 lbs to 135 lbs division where nobody can defeat him.
He moved to higher division cause that is where the big money fights are. Naturally when you fight bigger guys it’s much harder to knock them out than smaller guys.

If Malign aggi really believes that Pacquiao uses steroid say it loud and direct and offer proof. If he cannot and afraid to be sued then shut up cause you are just showing bias againts Pacquiao cause you are a Mayweather fan.

  33. Punching Bag says:

malignaggi is bitter he wasnt given a chance to fight big paychecks. he is a garbage in boxing. he is not even famous lol. when you watch him fight, you know already he is gonna lose. so garbage fighter. now commentator? what a joke!

  34. Godzilla says:

If Amir Khan beat Pacman and then I’ll cut off my ball.

  35. steve montebon says:

the lady Malignaggi have spoken….because he can’t stand being neglected by the Pacman….he is the mouthpiece of Gayweather….therefor no wonder he hates the Pacman….this nobody boxer wearing stockings and T-Back panties during his private moments together with Gayweather using the same…….hahahahaha….FAGOT….

  36. Ken says:

I can’t believe this guy Paulie is being interviewed? What has he done in boxing? This guy has no power and is not even ranked. Why do you even bother interviewing him? YOu might as well interview a bum from the street. Truth is, he is a hater and discredit Pacman in every interview he does. He is obviously craving for attention, and funny thing is, Pacman just ignores him. LOL

    • OSCAR VALERIO says:

I think Jenna J don’t know what to select a person to be interviewed. Paul Malign is a nonsense in boxing but why the hell she spend her time on this person? It seems to me that the writer is also has no credibility when selecting her resource person.

      • spike lee says:

i agree paulie malignant is a joke. but i disagree about the credibility of ms. jenna jay. she’s legit and the real deal. she has contributed alot to the sport of boxing imho as a journalist. it’s okay to have other people’s perspective no matter how retarded it is. just like when floyd joy sr. graces the show and spews his nonsensical blather. so i aint mad at her. stupid is as stupid does and sometimes letting them talk helps to reveal them to the masses.

  37. PACMANUSA says:

You little guido punk the best thing you can do for yourself is to stay outta the ring !

The best thing you can do for the general public is stay oughtta the ring and stop being a commentator .

  38. spike lee says:

paulie still hating because he never got the license to drive a hype train like the man who he envies so much. punk is such a p.o.s.

3yr run is what everyone is holding on to? really paulie? are you ignoring the part where manny fought 2 times a year? so in those 3 yrs he fought 6 times. how many fights did you have in 3 yrs that anyone held on to it as anything competitive or exciting? the porter fight maybe cuz it’s the only one fresh on anyone’s mind…where you got your ass handed to you. other than that, who is you nukka?! a nobody has-been and never-was. stfu and gfoh bum ass tomato sauce can…just eat your slice of pizza and be quiet.

  39. thotieboy says:

Paulie should stick to commentating because she’s all talk.

  40. According to my source, Paul Malignaggi was taking PEDS, to become B+ fighter, and won 2 world championship belt. He was able to avoid being caught as he never was tested by VADA or existing testing body.

  41. Rick says:

Never seen a positive comment yet with regards to Mr. *Obvious* Malign-aggi. It;s heartening that people can see through his character. Truth really wins in the end.

  42. stampede says:

What credibility this guy has? Who is he by the way? Nothing to impress the boxing world except his big mouth. Maybe he just want to get noticed by Team Pacman to enter the ring with him and make money?!? Too bad it will never happen…hahaha.

  43. vin says:

manny does random drug testing after he fight marquez 4. does he looked superman at his fights with mosley, marquez 3, bradley 1? i dont think so so stop making pac look bad by making no balls assumptions. let me give a theory watch the pac margarito fyt. that time even though he overwhelms margarito hes been punch by a legit super welterweight with really heavy fist, that, i think permanantly damage pac. hes been hit so much in that fight that it causes a permanent damage in his body thats why after that fight he is no longer look like a “superman” not because of “propaganda” that this paulie making

  44. real dude says:

WHO DA FUCK is Paulie Malignaggi? I follow boxing and can’t believe I don’t know this guy who bad mouths the 8 divisional champ, Manny Pacquiao!!!
