Roger Mayweather is the well known uncle and co-trainer of Floyd Mayweather Jr, having worked with his nephew for all of his professional training career. While is role has changed in recent years with his brother Floyd Mayweather Sr. being the main voice in the corner, Roger still does most of the gym preparations for the sports #1 p4p boxer.
In part 1 of my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Roger Mayweather, I get his thoughts on the fight that was Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Roger gives his thoughts on his nephew’s performance and on Manny Pacquiao’s shoulder injury. Roger also talks about his brother’s reaction in the corner, and if he thinks Floyd could of done better in the fight. Additionally Roger talks about the possibility of a rematch and what he would like to see if one happens. Here is what Roger Mayweather had to say. (ontheropesboxing.com/otr-copyright-agreement/)
Jenna J: What did you think of Floyd’s performance over Manny Pacquiao?
Roger Mayweather: Floyd whooped his ass, that’s what he did. That ain’t got nothing to do with anything, he whooped his ass. Obviously he whooped his ass because of how big the fucking scoring was on the fight. Pacquiao didn’t do shit.
Jenna J: Were you surprised by how one-sided the fight was?
Roger Mayweather: I’m not surprised. I actually told my nephew, I said, “You need to start going to his motherfucking body, start taking that body away from his ass and you’re gonna stop him,” but he didn’t do it. But his hands were hurting, I know his hands were hurting because his hands were hurting in the backroom when I was training him. I was warming him up and his hand was hurting. He did what he could do but if they fought again, he’d knock him out. If Floyd and Pacquiao fought again, Floyd would knock him out.
Jenna J: What do you make of Pacquiao’s shoulder injury?
Roger Mayweather: Whatever he do, I don’t think that made a difference. I don’t think that made a difference because the thing of it was, my nephew was on top of him and he couldn’t really do anything as far as keeping Floyd off of him. That’s how it was.
Jenna J: Do you think there’s any point in even having a rematch?
Roger Mayweather: I think it was one sided but I think they should have a rematch. Why I say that is because if Floyd fought Pacquiao with good motherfucking hands, he would stop Pacquiao, period. He would stop Pacquiao. I did say that Pacquiao fought a good fight but I also know that Floyd’s hands were hurting because I train Floyd, but it is what it is.
Jenna J: In the corner, Floyd Mayweather Sr. was getting upset because he didn’t feel he was doing what he wanted him to do. What were your thoughts on that?
Roger Mayweather: Floyd(Sr.) don’t even train Floyd, so it don’t make no difference about what he says. Don’t mean shit about what he said. Floyd don’t train Floyd, and he didn’t even know Floyd’s hand was hurting. I knew Floyd’s hands were hurting because I train Floyd every day. What does he know? He don’t know nothing. Floyd’s hands were hurting every day, but he fought him anyways.
Jenna J: Did you guys know anything about Pacquiao’s shoulder before the fight?
Roger Mayweather: I didn’t know anything about his shoulder. I didn’t know anything.
Jenna J: In some replays, it appeared to some people that Floyd would pull and twist the arm of Pacquiao.
Roger Mayweather: Well if it was, I didn’t know it. My thing is, I told my nephew when he fought and his hand was hurting, I just said, “You can outpoint him anyways, so it’s not so much that you have so much impact, but you can outpoint him. You’re ain’t gonna look the way you normally look, but that’s part of boxing.”
Jenna J: Do you think Floyd is disappointed that he didn’t score a knockout?
Roger Mayweather: Yeah he is. That’s why I said they could make that fight again. I’m sure he’s mad because all the talk that people were saying that Floyd is gonna knock Pacquiao out and this and that and the other. He never got no knockout. He never even dropped Pacquiao, so I’m sure that through that performance, he never did anything that he said he was going to do.
Jenna J: Do you think there’s unfinished business in this fight?
Roger Mayweather: Yeah, I believe that fight could be made again and he will get what he wants with Pacquiao, I believe he will get that. I know his hands were hurting because his hand was hurting in the gym.
