Former 2-time world champion, Devon Alexander, is hoping to make a comeback to the top of the welterweight division in 2018. He makes his return to the ring February 17th against former world champion, Victor Ortiz, in a crossroads match for both. Alexander’s most notable wins have come against Junior Witter, Lucas Matthysse, and Marcos Maidana.
In part 2 of my interview with Devon Alexander, I get his thoughts on some upcoming interesting fights in the sport. Devon shares his views on Canelo vs. Golovkin and talks about who he’s favoring in the rematch. Alexander also gives his opinion on Joshua vs. Parker, which is expected to generate a lot of online betting. Additionally, Alexander speaks on the Pacquiao vs. McGregor rumors and talks about his own future. Here is what Devon Alexander had to say.
Robert Brown: The first fight between Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was very close, who did you think won the first fight and what are your thoughts on the rematch?
Devon Alexander: I think ‘GGG’ pulled it out, in my opinion. I think he had the cleaner punches and I think Canelo stayed on the ropes a little too much. In that fight I think Canelo gassed out in the later rounds. I thought Golovkin edged it out. In the rematch, I think it will be more action packed because I think both of them have something to prove. I have to go with Golovkin again on that.
Robert Brown: Jeff Horn is going to be fighting Terence Crawford, do you give Horn any chance in that fight?
Devon Alexander: This is boxing, you don’t count anybody out. I’ve learned that early in my career, that you don’t count anyone out. Just look over the years how many underdogs have beaten the top fighters. You never take anybody for granted, of course you have a chance. Horn just has to be willing to make some sacrifices and be willing to take some chances. That’s what it’s all about, he’s in a position where he has to take chances if he wants to win.
Robert Brown: What do you think of the upcoming fight between Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker?
Devon Alexander: Parker seems like he can be a threat to Joshua. I think he can throw a monkey wrench into Joshua-Wilder because he can fight.
Robert Brown: Do you think Parker will be competitive with Joshua?
Devon Alexander: That’s not going to be an easy fight for Joshua. This is going to be a tough fight because Parker can definitely fight.
Robert Brown: There were strong rumors of a Pacquiao-McGregor bout. What are your thoughts on that fight, do you think it will happen?
Devon Alexander: I didn’t think McGregor and Floyd were going to fight, but they did. I just can’t say if it will happen or not. If both of them agree to a fight then I think it will happen. I think it’s a waste of time, I think it would just be for entertainment. Boxing is serious and that would just be for entertainment.
Robert Brown: Amir Khan just signed with Eddie Hearn, which makes it more possible that a fight between Khan and Kell Brook can happen. Are you still interested in seeing Khan vs. Brook? Who do you think would win that fight?
Devon Alexander: I think it will still be a big fight over there where they’re at. I think it will definitely be a big fight in England for him. Who wins the fight? Both of them have flaws. Kell Brook’s eye is susceptible to injury and Amir Khan’s chin is just not there. It’s just whoever can target each others weaknesses. Kell Brook’s weakness is his eye and Khan is his chin. Whoever can reach whoever’s weakness first is going to win that fight.
Robert Brown: Where do you hope to be at the end of 2018? Do you hope to be in a title shot position?
Devon Alexander: Absolutely, by 2018 I want to be fighter of the year. I want to be the comeback fighter of the year by the end of 2018. I want to be able to be in a position to fight for a title at the end of the year.
Khan can’t break titanium
I don’t see how Khan wins….Khan is not dumb, he knows what’s up..
Khan gets tagged then hes out.
Can Devon really comment on Amir’s chin when he couldn’t touch it himself? He says his ‘chin is just not there’. If that’s the case, why not just go for broke and try to KO him, as whatever gameplan he had for their fight clearly didn’t work.
That said, i have Brook by KO if the fight happens. Khan’s speed will cause problems for a bit though.
They are still better than Alexander. Didn`t Khan outbox him easily?
Where to they get this ‘British superstar’ shyte from .He’s a chinny little twat from Bolton.
Khan is done, has been for a long time that’s why for five years since moving up to welterweight he hasn’t fought a single welterweight contender.
Brook will be retired in a year or less .Move on there’s much more and much better out there..That fight has past it’s sell by date.
