Amir Khan was quite a popular name in the boxing world by the year 2009. He had won every bout and had lost just once against Breidis Prescott. But the British boxer included himself among the A-listers when he defeated the great Mexican fighter Marco Antonio Barrera by technical decision. Coming into this fight, Kotelnik had lost only two matches out of his previous 34 and was ranked number five light-welterweight according to The Ring Magazine. While Khan had suffered only one loss out of his previous 21 matches and was ranked number ten at lightweight.
Kotelnik couldn’t match Khan’s speed and determination and so he let the British boxer gain many points in the first ten rounds. Kotelnik tried to make a comeback in the final rounds but failed to land a decisive punch. Khan claimed the match by unanimous decision and so he became the 3rd youngest British boxer to win a world title.

3- vs Paulie Malignaggi
This was Khan’s first professional match on US soil and he didn’t disappoint his American fans. Khan dominated the match with his speed, power, and combinations. Malignaggi spent every ounce of his energy to win this bout but the difference in quality between the two boxers was quite pronounced, and referee Steve Smoger stopped the match in the 11th round with Malignaggi hurt and in no position to compete further. Afterward, Malignaggi admitted that he lost the bout to the better man.
