Shane Mosley: “Pacquiao slipped up, he went for the knock out and got knocked out. He got greedy and he got caught.”

This Saturday night Mayweather and Alvarez will meet in the ring for the first time and while both fighters have gotten to this fight in different ways, there is one thing they do share in common, that being that both men have faced former 2 division world champion Sugar Shane Mosley. Mayweather defeated Mosley in May of 2010, and then 2 years later, Saul Alvarez did the same.

In part 2 of my interview with Shane Mosley I discuss with him the fight that the boxing world awaits and get his views on who he thinks will end up winning it. Shane also touches on the welterweight division and some of the fighters he might like to face in the ring. Additionally Mosley gives his thoughts on the return of Manny Pacquiao and also gives his official prediction for his upcoming bout against Anthony Mundine. Here is what Shane Mosley had to say.

Jenna J: Alright well Shane you mentioned you wanted to stay neutral in the whole fight, do you think if you sparred Saul Alvarez, that you would have actually prepared him better for fighting Floyd because you have unique speed, because you have power, because you are the class of fighter that you are. Do you think he would do better in a fight with Mayweather if he had that opportunity?

Shane Mosley: Possibly, it’s possible but it’s all very respective to his competition, so he’s very sharp, he’s very good and he should do well.

Jenna J: I’ve got to ask you Shane, who do you actually think is going to win that fight? That’s the fight everyone’s talking about, it’s the fight everyone wants to see. If you had to pick a winner based on the fact that you’ve been in the ring with both fighters, who are you favoring?

Mosley: You know, if I had to put money down, I’d probably put it on Floyd but I can still see Canelo Alvarez winning the fight. I have to stay neutral with it all the way through because it’s gonna be a great fight, it can be a draw, I don’t know. It’s gonna be a great fight, it’s a fight that everybody must watch, you don’t know who’s gonna win.

Jenna J: Alright well Shane you mentioned that you want to get back to being a champion of the weight class, you had an opportunity before that was gonna be set up, it was gonna be against Paulie Malignaggi, that fight didn’t happen for you and Paulie went on to fight Adrien Broner. It was a very close and competitive fight, were you surprised by that result and the way that fight played out, and are you looking at Adrien Broner as a potential target for yourself down the line?

Mosley: Well I’m looking at any welterweight for a potential target, Adrien Broner’s a great fighter, great young fighter and if it has to happen it will happen. But he’s like a little brother to me so I kind of shy away from it a little bit, but if it has to happen then I will, but there’s other fights out there: Devon Alexander, Timothy Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, there’s a lot of guys out there at 147 lbs. that I can get in the ring with.

Jenna J: Now Shane you just turned 42 years old, how much longer do you think you can fight effectively?

Mosley: I think I can fight about 5 or 6 more years effectively at this point. I’m doing the Bernard Hopkins plan, he’s 49 and he’s fighting very well. I bet I can do the same thing, I’m feeling good, I’m feeling better than when I fought Mayweather and Saul Alvarez, I feel better right now than I did for those fight so I’m only getting better and better, sharper and sharper and I can fight for a while.

Jenna J: Alright well Shane I just have a couple more questions before I let you off the line here. You fought so many good fighters during your boxing career, you fought guys that are gonna be thought of as legends of the game, you yourself are a future Hall of Famer. When it’s all said and done, when you look at all your fights and I know it’s not done yet but what do you think is gonna be your proudest moment?

Mosley: My proudest moment is gonna be probably beating Oscar[De La Hoya] in 2000 at the Staples Center. The whole world got a chance to see Sugar Shane Mosley at that point. That put me in the Hall of Fame I believe.

Jenna J: And I mentioned the great fighters that you’ve fought, Manny Pacquiao, he’s returning to the ring Shane and I just quickly want to get your view on this. How do you think he’s gonna come back from the KO loss at the hands of [Juan Manuel}Marquez?

Mosley: I think he’s gonna come back pretty good, very well actually. Things happen when you fight guys 3 or 4 times, different things gotta be prepared, he slipped up, he went for the knock out and got knocked out. Those types of things can happen, you get greedy and you get caught with a shot being greedy. He got greedy and he got caught.

Jenna J: Ok Shane back to your fight with Anthony Mundine, what is your official prediction? and I know you say every time that you’re gonna go for the knock out.

Mosley: Knock out, I’m going for the knock out. I’m going to his back yard in Australia and I’m trying to knock him out. When I was over there in Mexico I was trying to knock the young kid out. I’m going for the knock out.

Jenna J: Alright and if you don’t get that knock out, do you think you can get a decision in Australia?

Mosley: You know what, I’m gonna be in great shape but I’m going for the knock out though, I’m gonna make it interesting and exciting. Every time I fight I want a knock out.

Jenna J: Alright final question for you, all the fans out there, all the people that support you, people that follow you on twitter, any message you want to pass along to them?

Mosley: I’m going for the knock out all the time, no but thank you for being great fans, it’s @SugarShaneM on twitter so go ahead an follow me.

  1. I think Pacquiao’s arrogance was his downfall, ever since he became a Christian he started thinking he had more power, it got to his head and he ran head first into a right haymaker. RIP Pacquiao’s career

  2. I think Shane was right. Pacman thought JMM was ready to go and he rushed and got caught. The Pacman and Freddie were overconfident that they guaranteed there will be no 5th fight because Pacmand will KO JMM for sure. That was the fight plan and nothing else. This time against Rios, it is the same fight plan -KO Rios. Again, Manny and Freddie are overconfident because they think that they will KO Rios for sure. Manny did not utilize his Strenght and Conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, to do the plyometrics that is why he got KO’d. With the plyometrics, Manny was able to withstand the power of De La Hoya, Margarito, and Cotto. Now, he fired the poor Ariza and will fight Rios without a S&C coach, although one is coming a month before the fight, which is not enough to toughen a boxer. JMM did it in 4 months, although with the help of PEDS.

  3. i dont care if manny got ktfo….this is boxing….you give it and you take it….well…shane is just there for the money….after that shameful display against manny…i will never ever watch him again….

  4. Maybe SHAME would like to fight Pacquiao again. In the last fight SHAME begged Richardson to stop the fight.
