Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 43-1(KO31) returned to the squared circle against fellow Mexican, Alfredo ‘El Perro’ Angulo 22-4(KO18) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, following his shut out loss against Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, back in September of last year.
Round 1: The bout got going in the first round with Canelo showing lots of aggression.
Very little movement from either fighter at this stage, both men standing dead center of the ring, right in front of each other. A beautifully timed uppercut from Canelo landed flush on Angulo. The younger Mexican is landing clean jabs with a great deal of snap behind them.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 2: Canelo started off in the same vein once again, landing the heavier more accurate shots on Angulo. Canelo is by far looking physically stronger than Angulo.
Canelo Alvarez timing the uppercut once more with ease, seems like Angulo is waiting for something at this juncture, as little aggression is shown by him. Canelo landing at will, as in the opening round. Alvarez is clearly taking the Mayweather loss out on Alfredo Angulo with some ferocity.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 3: Canelo is timing the uppercut magnificently right now, seems so confident of it landing every time. Alvarez continues landing flush shots at will. Toe to toe dead center of the ring. If Angulo doesn’t do something soon I couldn’t see the fight going much longer if it stays on this path.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 4: Everything is connecting for Canelo; the uppercuts from Alvarez really are crisp and well timed. Alvarez growing in confidence by the second. Combos from Canelo are unanswered. ‘El Perro’ showing real heart, grit and determination to keep walking forward.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 5: Canelo starts off working the jab and still landing it at will. No adjustment whatsoever from Alfredo Angulo and his corner up to now. Angulo still very brave, looking for Canelo, but has no answers to Canelo’s ability. The face of Angulo is starting to look marked up. Blood now emerges from over the right eye of Angulo.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 6: A bit less activity early doors in the sixth. Angulo is still hunting for Canelo with nothing coming to fruition thus far. Good looking uppercut from Angulo inside, Alfredo Angulo’s best shot thus far. Cleaner shots landed by Canelo, but a lot closer round. Angulo looks a beaten man for me at this stage.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 7: Angulo is getting picked off with powerful shots from Canelo. Angulo continues to walk forward bravely. Alvarez has pushed Angulo off him a few times, still no warning from experienced ref Tony Weeks. Good combination from Angulo. Canelo seems to see almost everything coming from his Mexican compatriot. Seems like Canelo is taking a breather slightly in this round, but still it’s a Canelo round.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 8: Canelo continues to land flush heavy shots from the start of the round.
Angulo still searching for Alvarez but he is very low on actual scoring shots. Lovely work from Canelo in the corner of the ring. Canelo misses wildly to the body of Angulo.
Alvarez waves Angulo forward for the tear up. Canelo clearly sees the stoppage coming.
Angulo shows huge heart after the bell and continues to stalk Canelo on his way to his corner! Angulo wants the Mexican stand off. Really hard to give any round to Angulo at this stage.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 9: Nice body work from Canelo in the opening of the round. Angulo looking stronger at the start of this round though, but his face is showing damage, as he is now cut over both eyes. Alvarez showing great defense, bobbing and weaving. Beautiful hook from Canelo gets through. Angulo landed a good looking combination at the end of the round. A closer round, but clearly still one that goes the way of Saul Alvarez.
10-9 Alvarez
Round 10: Concern in the corner of Angulo between the round, as Virgil Hunter tells Angulo that he won’t see this go on much longer if Canelo continues to land at will. The round starts with a great left hook from range by Canelo, who is showing no signs of slowing his attack.
After another Canelo surge, referee Tony Weeks steps in to call the bout off with two minutes and fourteen seconds remaining in the round. Canelo landed a heavy shot that sent Angulo a few steps back and then instantly struck a thudding uppercut within seconds of the first shot landing on Angulo, this being the last shot Weeks would allow. Alfredo Angulo is very disappointed by the stoppage, as is the crowd.
Alvarez TKO 10
I can’t disagree with Tony Week’s call. Good stoppage for my money. Canelo clearly showing what he can do at the correct weight, come fight night. I was really impressed by the manner in which the young Mexican superstar dealt with Alfredo Angulo. It was a great way for Canelo to come back from that Mayweather disappointment. It doesn’t seem to have dented Canelo’s confidence whatsoever.
This was a good fight for Canelo to get back on track and to winning ways. I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes next for Canelo. This young Mexican has it all in front of him now.
Who comes next for the young Mexican? Who would you like to see him get in the ring with? Erislandy Lara is now set to face Ishe Smith, so the Cuban is off the list of possible opponents for Canelo at this time.
Who would you like to see as Canelo’s next opponent?
this was so much cheaper than watching the fight. Thanks!
Welcome 🙂
Angulo was the perfect guy for Canelo. I watched the fight and it was a one sided slapping. Freckles needs a better challenge.
That stoppage was horseshit man…one shot and the ref stops the fight? ffs man
“One shot”? Did you even watch the fight? The stoppage happened in the 10th round.
Was a well timed stoppage I thought. It was only gonna get worse for Angulo. He has heart.
The only people who will see it as bullshit, are likely to have had money on Canelo via points victory.
This fight is a fights between “The Turtle and The Duck”. Canelo the turtle looks better than the Duck Angulo.
Canelo was hit by Meyweather at Money’s will.
