Demetrius Andrade: “I don’t want to be the reason why Floyd Mayweather gets his first loss. I want to see the man go undefeated!”

I recently was afforded an opportunity to speak to undefeated WBO light middleweight champion, Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade about his future and some of the opponents he would like to face. Andrade, 21-0 14 KOs, talks about a possible Erislandy Lara bout, and how he thinks that fight would go if they were to fight. Demetrius also speaks on fighting Saul Alvarez and who he thinks will win the Canelo-Kirland fight later next month. Additionally, Andrade shares his views on fighting Floyd Mayweather and who will win the upcoming Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Here is what Demetrius Andrade had to say.

Robert Brown: There has been a lot of back and forth talk between you and Erislandy Lara in the media. What is your side of the story on all of that?

Demetrius Andrade: I fought him in the amateurs when I was about sixteen or seventeen years old. If you look at my age today and his age today, you will see the differentials. He won the decision when it was finally said, just like Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson — they just fought and that was a fight where a lot of people thought Peterson won the fight, and when you look at the fight, you see there was some damage being done from Lamont Peterson and looking at the fight, you guess who won the fight. That’s pretty much how me and Lara’s fight went down.

He got the decision because we were overseas in a different country, not the USA. At the end of the day, we fought for four rounds, amateur bout. The score was 4-9. I, Demetrius Andrade the champ currently, scored four points in four rounds, meaning I hit him one time in one round. He must run really fast not to get hit, he must run really fast and then throws pitty pat slapping to score points.

Robert Brown: You think if Lara stepped in the ring with you and decided to stand and fight with you, he would lose?

Demetrius Andrade: Definitely would lose, regardless of what goes on in that ring.

Robert Brown: The 154lb division has a lot of names in it. How do you feel overall about the talent and the fighters in your division?

Demetrius Andrade: I believe we have great talent in our division. I believe our division is one of the best out there to tune in and to watch. Out of all that, I believe I am the greatest one out of all of them in that division.

Robert Brown: When are you hoping to get back in the ring?

Demetrius Andrade: I would like to get in the ring with somebody that I want to get in the ring with. That would be nice for me. I should be able to pick who I want to fight, that’s kind of what I would like to wait for. I don’t mind sitting down because I’m that great in my eyes and my abilities that I can sit for a good amount of time and still be the best and the greatest at what I do when I step into the ring.

Muhammad Ali, he went to jail and they took his license so he couldn’t box, he came back and he became champion of the world. Floyd Mayweather did it, he sat down for twenty one months I believe, and he came back and fought Marquez. Who is gonna follow after those footsteps? It’s going to be Demetrious Andrade. He sat for a certain amount of months and is a world champion.

Robert Brown: Would you like to face the winner of Saul Alvarez and James Kirkland? Who are you tipping to win that fight?

Demetrius Andrade: I would like to take who I like to pick. Either one of them would be good, no matter wins and who loses because they’re still both credible and worthy opponents in the 154lb division. It doesn’t really matter to me who wins or who loses.

Robert Brown: Floyd Mayweather is still a champion at 154lbs. If he beats Pacquiao, would you like the opportunity to fight Floyd? How do you think you’d do against Floyd?

Demetrius Andrade: I don’t want to fight Mayweather, I do not want to fight him, no. The reason why I don’t want to fight him is because I want to see him be that minority, that black person living in America being the best ever, undefeated.

Him being Mayweather and me being Demetrious, stepping into the ring, I don’t want to be the reason why he gets his first loss. I want to see the man go undefeated. The guys he’s fighting, he’s beaten, but if he steps into the ring with somebody like me, he will not know what hit him.

Robert Brown: So you think if you stepped into the ring with Mayweather that you would give him his first loss and he would no longer be undefeated?

Demetrius Andrade: Yes.

Robert Brown: What are your thoughts on the big mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather? As a boxing fan, are you looking forward to the fight?

Demetrius Andrade: Yes, a Mayweather fight is always exciting to watch. Pacquiao himself is a person you always want to go see fight. Them two together are bringing the whole wide world to tune in of all ethnicities and cultures out there. I would have got on that card and fought for free, I’d have fought Lara on May 2nd or even Charlo on May 2nd for free that day!

Robert Brown: Who do you think will win and do you think it will go twelve rounds?

Demetrius Andrade: I just want to say, may the best man win and God bless them.
