Dereck Chisora: “I’m gonna fight Deontay Wilder if he wins the title and I’m gonna knock him out!”

(transcribed by Michael Readman) In part 2 of my “On The Ropes” interview with heavyweight contender Dereck Chisora, I get his thoughts on a potential rematch bout with Tyson Fury, and if he thinks those two will only meet if Fury has a title belt. Chisora also discusses his position in the heavyweight division, his plan to fight 6 bouts in 2014, and his hope to have a rematch with former heavyweight champion David Haye. Additionally Dereck talks about getting a title fight before the year is through, and the fighter he believes will be holding the WBC belt, Deontay Wilder. Here is what Dereck Chisora had to say.

Jenna J: Dereck, you say that you want to have six fights in 2014. There is one particular guy out there that actually mentioned your name on my radio show, that being Tyson Fury. He said he would like to face you but not right away. He would like to have a title belt when he has a rematch with you. What do you make of Tyson Fury wanting to fight you?

Dereck Chisora: There is one thing with Tyson, he respects me and I respect him. He doesn’t insult me, he doesn’t go on Twitter and start having a go at me, I don’t have a go at him, you know.

He answered the question himself, he wants to get a title then he can have a match with me, which is fair because when he fought me, I had titles and he didn’t have none so I think when I fight him he should have a title so I can take his title off him. I think the fight with me and Tyson will happen by the end of this year.

Jenna J: He mentioned on the show that you were ranked number six and you were ranked ahead of him. What do you think about where he is right now in the heavyweight rankings because of the big delay he had with David Haye?

Dereck Chisora: No it’s not that, the reason why I have six fights with Frank Warren is because we came to an agreement money wise, instead of me making about two hundred and fifty thousand a fight, I make half of that, so now I can ask for six fights.

If you ask for so much money, a promoter can only promote you once a year or twice a year and the TV wont be able to sustain paying you, so we ask for less money and we fight more times.

Tyson and his TV deal is gonna expire soon so he needs to milk it so much, so that’s why he’s only had one fight last year and this year I think he wants to do six fights, but I don’t think its gonna happen. He might be signing up with our TV station.

Jenna J: What did you think of him having the fights set up with David Haye but David Haye twice pulling out. Were you surprised that happened?

Dereck Chisora: No, there was an injury there, David had an injury. That’s the same injury Wladimir had when he had to retire. That’s a bad injury to have as a boxer because you take a long, long time to heal from that.

What I think David Haye’s done for himself was the better way for him to say, “You know what, I’m retired now, I don’t want to rush back into boxing, I wanna take my time until I know my shoulders fine and then I’ll come back.”

Jenna J: Do you think that David Haye will ever return to boxing the way that he was?

Dereck Chisora: Yeah he will, he’ll come back. We’re all fighters, all we know is fighting since we were young, so he’ll come back. The only problem we got is we have to get old.

Jenna J: In regards to him and in regards to Tyson Fury, do you look at them both and think those are two guys you want a rematch to show the differences in yourself?

Dereck Chisora: Yeah, I’m the only guy that can bring David Haye out of retirement.

Jenna J: Do you think he will want to rematch you ever?

Dereck Chisora: Yeah, one hundred percent.

Jenna J: Why is that?

Dereck Chisora: Because we generate so much money with the English public, he knows that. Forget any other fight. You see, me and David Haye’s fight last year was the number one fight in Europe, we had everybody watching that fight.

We had people standing in the rain, people got soaked because they wanted to watch that fight. We sold thirty six thousand tickets outdoor in the rain, it was dripping raining and people still came to watch the fight.

Jenna J: With that fight Dereck, what happened with you with that? It was surprising to a lot of people that it wasn’t the competitive fight they thought it was gonna be. What wasn’t particularly right with you for that one?

Dereck Chisora: It happens in boxing, you think you’re focused and you’re not focused at the time and I wasn’t focused, so I lost. Now I’m focused, now I’m ready.

Jenna J: Dereck, the six fights in 2014 that you want to have, do you think one of those fights will include a title shot?

Dereck Chisora: Yeah, that’s what were aiming for.

Jenna J: Where do you think that title shot will come from? Do you think it will come from the WBC where you are highly ranked, or do you think Wladimir will give you that chance?

Dereck Chisora: Whoever wins the WBC next in March, we are gonna be challenging them. If Deontay Wilder don’t go for it then we’re gonna go for it. It’s exciting times in the heavyweight game.

Chris Arreola is gonna win it and then he’s gonna fight Deontay Wilder and he’s gonna get knocked out by Deontay Wilder, then I’m gonna fight Deontay Wilder and I’m gonna knock him out and bring it back to Europe again and then we start making money in Europe from the title.

Jenna J: Back to your fight that you have on February 15th. What can fans expect from that match up?

Dereck Chisora: Right now I can’t say much because I’m not fit, but come February the first, you can call me and I’ll tell you exactly.

Jenna J: One final question for you Dereck, you have a lot of fans out there, a lot of people that support ‘Del Boy’ anything you want to say to them?

Dereck Chisora: I just want to say I hope you all had a great Christmas, a great New Years, lets love one and each other and lets stay in harmony and peace and keep supporting the sport I love and that’s boxing.
