Does Manny Pacquiao have the style to do what Maidana did to Mayweather, only better?

On Saturday night Floyd Mayweather walked out of the MGM grand casino as the unified 147lb and 154lb champion, notching up a 46th straight career victory. Whilst Mayweather emerged victorious, the routine Floyd performance most had expected failed to materialize. Landing 221 of 858 thrown, Marcos Maidana had connected more frequently on Floyd than any other opponent in his career.

Mayweather has shown the ability to adapt to any style, find the holes in his opposition and exploit them. Having landed 230 of 426 thrown, Mayweather once again found a way to win following a turbulent beginning. Floyd’s mixed performance against a pressure fighter once again raised the comparisons with Manny Pacquiao, and how ‘Money May’ would contain the ‘Pacman’ should they ever exchange leather in the ring.

When we breakdown and analyze Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, fans and critics spin into a whirlwind of accusations and theories into why the bout to break all box office records has not taken place. If we leave those points to one side, we can paint a clearer picture of what may happen in the ring. Taking into account that Manny Pacquiao has racked up more mileage on the career clock, as evidenced in recent years, this remains the fight the world craves to see.

Floyd Mayweather speaking to assembled media in the lead up to his clash with Marcos Maidana, reinforced why he has continued to experience success in his twilight years, “They can go to the body good, I still find a way to win. They can have power, I still find a way to win. They can have a great jab, I still find a way to win.” Few could dispute Floyd’s statement.

Many will argue that Jose Luis Castillo should have gotten the decision over Mayweather. Whilst Castillo arguably should have gotten the nod on the scorecards, Mayweather convincingly defeated Castillo in their rematch months later. The ‘May-Vinci’ code remained largely unsolved.

Oscar De La Hoya pushed Floyd in a closely fought bout in their 2007 clash, but fell short in the final stretch. Oscar’s ‘blueprint’ is somewhat flawed. Pressure fighting may deliver cracks in the ‘May-Vinci’ code, breaking the code is another scenario altogether. Enter Manny Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao’s aggressive style has brought him world titles in eight divisions and worldwide acclaim. Pacquiao’s willingness to violently trade blows with any opponent has produced an icon in the sport, and a fan favourite. However, the ‘Pacman’ has metamorphosed from a slugger to a technically apt boxer puncher. Blurring handspeed fused perfectly with knockout power in addition to sublime footwork guiding the Filipino in and out of range, Pacquiao is a formidable force in the ring.

When matched against an effective counter puncher, Pacquiao’s aggressive style can expose numerous openings to capitalize on. In no other fight was this more apparent than Pacquiao’s rivalry with Juan Manuel Marquez. Styles make fights, and Pacquiao’s attacking style blended with Juan Manuel’s counter attacking style to produce a beautiful yet brutal series of fights.

When Floyd earned a lob sided decision over Marquez, many fans believed Mayweather had the remedy to nullify ‘Pacman.’ On the flip side, Manny’s powerful left hand and mesmerizing combinations can overwhelm opponents. Hardened fighters like Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera, have come out on the wrong end of exchanges with Pacquiao.

Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and most recently Marcos Maidana proved in closing the distance and applying calculated pressure, Floyd can be placed in difficult situations.
Manny Pacquiao fights out of a southpaw stance, something Floyd has never endeared to, would bring an intractable style for Mayweather to contain. Floyd’s patented shoulder roll may prove to be a hindrance, arguably designed for an orthodox opponent. Whilst Floyd rolls off the right hand, Pacquiao’s left hand may find a home around the right glove.

On the end of velocious Pacquiao combinations, Mayweather would have a challenging task to pick his spots and counter. Floyd has altered his footwork in recent years, choosing to hold his ground more frequently than years gone by. Another element that may work in Manny’s favour.

Floyd’s most successful weapon in his arsenal has arguably been the right hand. Gauging the distance with impeccable precision, Mayweather’s right hand has found the target often and cleanly before moving out of range. Marquez and most recently Timothy Bradley experienced much success with the right hand against Pacquiao, an opening Floyd would likely look to utilize.

In terms of adapting to your surroundings, Floyd has shown the ability to readjust on the job and make technical alterations off what an opponent has offered in the ring. Pacquiao has shown this aspect to a lesser extent.

Following Mayweather’s victory on Saturday night, legendary heavyweight Muhammad Ali took to social media to congratulate Floyd and press the issue of a Manny Pacquiao fight. Ali echoed the boxing fraternity’s desire to see ‘Money May’ and ‘Pacman’ collide in the ring. Whilst time has not been kind to both fighter’s in equal amounts, let us hope this fight is not left to the historians of future generations to speculate who was the greatest of this generation.

      Correct absolutely right

      I’m a Filipino and I’m a big Pacquiao Fan. I would love to see this fight happen. However, I still believe that the pacman would be in a huge disadvantage if he doesn’t change his style. His current style is perfect for Duckweather”s superb counterpunching. The slugger version of manny would have been a big problem for Floyd but I don’t think that pacman is willing to go back to that style of fighting. Sad to say, Pacman has completely forgotten how to be a brawler and is now more comfortable being a counter puncher (which he has been pretty good but not at JMM or Duckweather’s level)

    • LEAGUE 40 says:

      Let’s give credit to Fraud’s punching power. He may not posses the same punching and KO power as Pac but his punches are enough to keep his opponents on a safe distance. Duckweather would never KO Pac unless if Pac pulls an Ortiz type of carelessness. Pac has the Power to KO Floyd but he would need to land a perfectly timed clean punch which I doubt will happen. Pac’s chance is to go back to his brawling days and emulate a Maidana type performance which I also highly doubt since Pac has been very comftable countering his opponents. I hope that Pac proves me wrong and does KO duckweather!

  2. Nevermind says:

    The fight between them will never happen because floyd doesnt care about the legacy, for him it’s all money but i’m still hoping they will fight in the name of boxing and for the fans who they owed their money since day 1 of their career..

    • Anonymous says:

      he never cares about his fans! all he care is his health… And still his fans defend him from not fighting the Pacman. He thinks he’s TBE… but to be the best ever you have to fight the best in your division!

  3. rickmayfield says:

    Mayweather always find a way, alibis not to fight, conditions to look for advantages:
    May I enumerate:
    1. drug testing issues
    2. promoter issues
    3. purse share
    4. ppv shares
    5. weight issues ( Marquiez fight)
    6. latest glove issues (colors, padding, brand……and blah,blah)

    Let may clarif,y the result in mayweather-maidanas fight would be different, if maidana wears his comfortable gloves….end of story! KNOCK OUT

  4. Henry says:

    Frank, obviously you don’t watch Pacquiao’s fights. Are you really a boxing writer? Or this is the first time you write about boxing? Mayweather will fight Pacquiao with the the ultimate condition. Wrap Pacquiao’s hands with 20-inch cotton pillows, then he will finally agree.

    • fraud gayweather jr says:

      lol! lol! lol!

    • You know Frank Walsh you write as if you’re just born last year 2000. You don’t know anything about real boxing. Pacquaio won the highly coveted “Fighter Of The Decade Award” last 2009 over the highly fancied and over rated “Woman Beater” Floydiot “The Greatest Evader” Gayweather, given by the American Boxing Writer’s Association to little fella, one-dimensional, ordinary fighter, yellow Asian fighter and Conressman in the Philippines, named Manny Pacquaio, whom Mayweather had been ducking until now by giving alibis by alibis by all costs. Pacquaio won the award because of the qualities of oppositions Pacquaio had during that 10 year span which cannot be said on Mayweather who kept on cherry picking opponents by saying, I’m the boss, I fight who I want to fight, Pacquaio is not on my level. See? Mayweather gives excuses after excuses. If Mayweather is a real man he should have fought Pacquaio 3x by now. You’re blinded by your emotions Mr. Writer instead of you using your senses to tell the truth to the viewing public. You compare Pacquaio’s fight Mayweather on the following fighters they have fought:
      Mayweather vs. Dela Hoya=Win: Mayweather by split decision
      Mayweather vs. Hatton= Win: Mayweather by TKO in Round 10
      See this:
      Pacquaio vs. Delahoya= Win: Pacquaio by TKO in Round 9 ( dela hoya quit on his stool, and
      Pacquaio administered a facial surgery at Dela Hoya which
      Mayweather did not
      Pacquaio vs Hatton=Win: Pacquaio by Round 2 KO( Hatton’s trainer was Mayweather Sr., after that fight they accused Pacquaio on using PEDS but they were defeated in the court of law).
      You better ask yourself first Mr. Writer with these ff. questios:
      1. Does Mayweather have the balls as big as Pacquaio’s coconut tree like balls to fight Pacquaio in the ring and not in the social media?
      2. Will Muhammad Ali and Lennox Lewis and the viewing public who are clamoring for Mayweather to fight Pacquaio, be able to grow Floyd’s balls to man up and fight Pacquaio to realize the fight that has been pending for almost 6 years now?
      3. Does Mayweather have the guts to borrow Ali’s balls to fight the the boxer whom Floyd called the little fella and ordinary fighter, single dimensional fighter Manny Pacquaio?
      That’s why we must be objective Mr. Writer in writing. I believe that if Mayweather’s conditions are all meet he will finally fight Pacquaio with these conditions:
      1. Pacquaio’s blood must all be drained;
      2. They will fight in a boxing ring as big as the NBA court;
      3. They will use a boxing glove as big as pillow and as soft as cotton to protect Floyd’s pretty face and avoid the same beating Pacquaio gave to Margarito(broken orbital bone), Cotto, Barrera, Morales, Diaz, Dela Hoya, etc.;
      4. Pacquaio’s left hand must be tied in Pacquaio’s balls as big as coconut so Floyd’s face will be safe; as Pacquiao will not be able to use his 7-10 lightning quick and razor sharp combos;
      5. they have to fight at Las Vegas only becauseit’s the only state where Floyd Gayweather is allowed to inject” xylophane” a drug used to numb Flod’s hand because Floyd has a brittle bones in his hands;
      6. Pacquaio’s socks must be inserted with thumb tucks to stop Pacquaio from moving fast;
      7. If Pacquaio wins, his purse must be given to charities world wide;
      8. If Mayweather loses, he gets all the purse plus PPV, plus he will not be vanished in america, the land of the brave;
      9. Finally, Pacquaio must be blind folded during the fight for Mayweather to finally fight Pacquaio. Now beat that!

      • Rey says:

        Man, you summarized everything! Great job!

      • Andrew says:

        and if pacquiao never accept any of these ridiculous offer by the gay..every mayweather die hard fans will believe pacman duck mayweather. WTF

  5. Edgar says:

    I agree with Nevermind. This fight will never happen because Duckweather is “a coward, a rich coward”. He doesn’t care about his legacy when the Pacman is involved. He will just lie his way to an excuse for avoiding the fight that the whole world wants. Duckweather Jr. is The Best Ducker Ever and the Greatest Ducker of All Time and he will be true to those epithets until he retires.

  6. Jerry Lynch (not related to the writer) says:

    As a boxing fan I have never paid for a Mayweather fight. I have paid for Pacquiao fights and if the 2 fought I would pay “the big bucks” to watch the fight on big screen rather than on my TV in my house. At this juncture, both fighters have lost a bit, but I believe Pacman has better speed, better movement and the stamina necessary to take down the money guy.

    A 50/50 split of the purses should be in order, or maybe a 60/40 with the winner taking the 60%.

    • wilwins4 says:

      I second the motion. I, too never paid any PPV for any Mayweather fight. Good assessment.

  7. Valendad says:

    Floyd’s legacy will always be tainted w/o a fight w/ Pacquaio… he will not be remembered as being great but as mayweather who was afraid to fight Pacquaio.

  8. tolin says:

    Sugar Ray Leonard’s way defeated Floyd Mayweather Sr. That’s how to do it against Floyd Mayweather Jr. ( Same face same style )

  9. pitty boy gayweather says:

    flodiot gayweather has no ball facing pacman . instead making up so many allibis gayweather will become the greatest in boxing the greatest coward and ducker of all time

  10. PACMANUSA says:

    By no means am I a fan of that bumm Mayweather . But I wonder if he thought Maidana was going to eb the ultimate pushover and didn’t train very hard . I mean based on all the crap video wise you saw before the fight he seemed as if boxing was the furthest thing from his little mind .

    I truely suspect “if” the fight ever came to be the bumm Mayweather would most certainly train harder for Pacquiao .

    But thats just my opinion , plus the fact that I think Mayweather to be the lowest form of life on the planet ..

    FMJ IS TRULY A TBE…TWO BALLS EXTRACTED

  12. B.Jader says:

    Maidana exposed Floyd in that fight.As comparison Pacquiao is far better than Maidana so in my opinion the more Floyd will avoid Pacquiao to fight.Floyd knows that it is a very risky for his zero record.Btw. Floyd already got 3 losses.

  13. Tedceldor says:

    Enough with the analysis. Let’s get it done. It doesn’t matter anymore who wins.

  14. B.Jader says:

    Floyd cherry picked the wrong guy Maidana. Floyd loves cherries.Floyd the pound 4 pound cherry picker

  15. B.Jader says:

    Ted,It really matters because it helps to orient the paying public the corruption in this sport of boxing. Las Vegas is Floyd territory and way that he will lose the fight unless you knock him out because judges are all blind.

  16. B.Jader says:

    Missing word: no (I mean no way)

  17. a nice observation and and a nice article from the author. i’d been following articles write ups all about boxing today, just a keen observation, am not being racist, all of those articles i had read especially if it’s about mayweather tand his future opponents pacman,s name is not included or even a bit mentioned. interview with mayweather’s they keep not to touch the thing or anything against pacman, man, is this a sign that the greatest pound for pound ranked champion of today is a coward avoiding someone to squareoff in the ring, observed all his picked opponents are not in the list of the top ten pound for pound of today, and those opponent he easily beat are all orthodox style punchers and not so much excellent in footwork. pac learned a lot from his defeats and now turned to a fine elite fighter… ideas, opinions are at stake why not shake the prove boxing go let the pac and floyd square off in the ring to prove who is the best. Am not so absurd to nullify the ring magazine’s pound for pound ranking as mayweather is the champ. but a recent unofficial survey ofh who is the best boxer of his era, it’s the pacman garnered the votes than mayweathers, i mean am not so technical about boxing but its the people who vote and say that.ugh! give us those fine fghtlet the pac and mayweathers square off for sure they will earna lotof money on this. if not mayweather will look like an ball less coward of his prime forever preventing to fight pacman and he will be had that boxing monicker as “duckweather, gayweather” quack!QUACK! QUACK! to the rest of his career.

  21. erning says:

    if manny will set aside his gentleman hat, and assemble a credible presscon to personally challenge Mayweather after all the cries and clamour for them to fight.. i think mayweather will be pushed to make his decision and will not be able to duck anymore

    • I agree PACQUIAO should step up and keep on calling MAYWEATHER to fight him unless pacman does not have the balls to fight FLOYD.thats just my opinion/

  22. Anna K says:

    Manny is too nice, he doesn’t have the inside fighting style of Maidana or Cotto. He fights better when the other guy is not too close to him, he’s too nice to hit back when they’re in a clinch. It’s gonna be a close fight with Mayweather, I don’t know if Pac still likes to even fight toe to toe, he’s very cautious now.

    Also Pacquiao is now a playing coach in the Philippine Basketball Association/Congressman. Freddie Roach must be really happy right now.

  23. Mateng says:

    Mayweather can’t throw a punch and only tries to cover when an opponent is throwing 4 or 5 punch combination, he’ll be mostly in his shell if he fights pacman, maidana doesn’t have speed, no foot work no side movement, just imagine what PACman can do to this duck.

    • jess says:

      Yes bro. The sucker puncher knows this very well and this is why he avoids fighting Pacquiao and cherry picks opponents. Fraud Jr has the skills to win against boxers he cherry picks but not against boxers like Pacquiao. By the way, Fraud Jr. used to be a Pacquiao fans. Did you see him cheering like an ordinary fan at the ringside for Pacquiao when Pacquiao was about to KO Morales during the second fight. Yes folks, Fraud Jr. was practically jumping and sitting when seeing Morales was getting hurt by Pacquiao. Perhaps until now Fraud Jr is a fan and admirer but he is just not showing it. That time he did nopt know that Pacquiao will become a welterweight invading Fraud Jr’s division. He started hating Pacquiao when he started defeating welterweights and soon enough the path was clear for a match between him and Pacquiao. But history of cowardice gets in the way which is why boxing fans will not ever see this match up.

  24. jess says:

    Fraud Jr can do all things he wanted in his boxing career and looked very good. This is all because he is not fighting Pacquiao. If he fights Pacquia he will not look good because it is clear that he is scared to death to fight Pacquiao. He comes up with a one-thousand -and-one excuses why he does not want to face Pacquiao. When he is asked why he will not face Pacquiao he gets very angry, he stutters, he tried to avoid the topics related to Pacquiao. When he fought other boxers he did not have any excuses. If one thinks very deep, his alibis are indeed moronic. For instance his demand for olympic style blood testing is stupid because NSC has its own system which has been applied to all boxing matches in Nevada including fights of Fraud Jr. Fraud Jr should retire now and stop robbing fans with their money by cherry picking opponents, sucker punching, cheating on weights, engaging in domestic violence, beating women in clubs, breaking bones of his ex-employees suspected of robbing him with his blings, shooting rink skaters, and getting angry with boxing media folks.

  26. MAYWEATHER is TBE of all time. “The Beater of woman Ever”. Why? Floyd can’t beat Pacquaio 1000% in Floyd’s mind so he will just beat women including the mother of her( Floyd’s) children, and cherry picked his opponents to protect Floyd’s bum record. Floyd was a bum from the start of his carrer, a frankenstein, created by HBO and SHOWTIME, to protect Floyd zero lose at all times so they could keep on milking dollars from Floyd’s nonsense and boring fights all the time. AMEN!

  27. Floyd’s undefeated mentality leads him to a diminishing legacy. What if Floyd manned up and fought Pacquaio, and beat Pacquaio in their fights? Mayweather could have gone down as an icon of the sport in America and all over the world. Floyd could have seized the opportunities in putting himself in the echelon of boxing immortality as THE BEST EVER by backing his claim in defeating the pretender on Floyd’s throne in a high note. Now, the clock is ticking down and soon Floyd will never be able to have the opportunity again.

    • Rommel Aniag says:

      Its a big “IF” Juel. Here’s why:

      The simple reason for all these excuses from Mayweather, is that his elite team of boxing experts realize that he will be in deep trouble against the Pacman, because the skills and resources of Manny are exactly what will work against Mayweather. Consider the following:

      1. Southpaw stance – this will negate the shoulder roll defense of Mayweather. He was built for orthodox fighters since he was a little kid, and if you look at all his fights against southpaws, Mayweather always have some problems. Consider Zab Judah. This makes Floyd uncomfortable.

      2. Blinding hand speed – How many times have you seen Mayweather go up against a fighter with comparable hand speed? Asnwer: Never. And the hand speed is always his biggest weapon against power punchers, which earns him the points to win his fights. With Pacquiao, he will be facing someone with equal, if not greater hand speed than him. That is real formula for disaster for Mayweather. This makes Floyd really wary of fighting Pacquiao.

      3. Punches in bunches – Mayweather may have a very good defense, and can probably avoid the first one, two maybe even three punches coming from Pacquiao, but those combinations do not end there, they come in bunches of combinations stringed together, sometimes totaling 7 to 12 punches in one go. No way can he cover against them. This drives Mayweather to duck Pacquiao.

      4. Power – There is no doubt about this one. From Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Dela Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Mosley, Margarito, Rios and Bradley, the last 7 fighters even being naturally bigger than Pacquiao, but all 10 of these great boxers felt his destructive power. The same punching power that either put them to sleep, badly disfigured their faces, knocked them down or simply just kept them from steam rolling their way into Pacquiao, all of which are a testament to that power. Floyd does not have a comparable resume to speak of. Pacquiao will hurt Mayweather once it hits him, and there is NO power behind Floyd’s punches that can seriously discourage Manny from attacking him, just like Maidana. The big difference is that Manny’s punches are faster and will come from more weird angles that Floyd will not be able to anticipate most of the time. That has the potential to knock Floyd down (and out). And this plainly scares Floyd.

      Footwork – No one comes close to Manny’s footwork in the ring, except maybe Floyd, but the latter’s footwork is still not as good as Manny. This helps him with his in and out movement against bigger opponents like Margarito, Rios and ODLH. They could hardly touch him, even as Manny was methodically re-arranging their facial features. And this gets Pacquiao to the angles that he want to launch his combos, and his power shots. And this makes Floyd insecure.

      Strong chin – barring any “ROID-powered, Marquez-like, perfectly-timed, foot-stepping, lucky punch, while Pacquiao was carelessly walking into the punch with hands down, trying to finish an embattled opponent”, Mayweather does not have any chance of a knockout. To this day, its hard to fathom, how Marquez can have that natural punching power at near age 40, when he NEVER had that power his whole career. The same power was again absent when he fought and lost to Bradley recently. Explanations can only come from his new found conditioning coach, the non-traceable PED specialist “Memo Heredia”, whom pee-drinker specifically hired just prior to his 4th bout with Manny. Manny took the best uppercuts and right flushes from the likes of Barrera, Cotto, Morales and Margarito during their fights and came out unscathed. And this adds to Floyd’s aversion of Pacquiao.

      Stamina – there is no one who can be comparable to both Manny and Floyd when it comes to staying fresh and explosive throughout the entire fight. This is one element why these 2 guys may have a competitive fight in the beginning of their ‘fight clinics’, but, almost always, the second half their fight fully belongs to them. Yes, they are able to figure their opponents more during that period, but the bigger factor is that in the latter stages of the fight, both of them normally have so much more in the tank compared to their opponents. They both have boundless source of energy. For Floyd, this will be the first time that he is facing a pressure fighter with the same reservoir of energy as he has. Maidana came very close to giving Mayweather that “L” on his record, but he ran out of steam. Manny will not ran out of steam, and Floyd knows it. And this adds to Floyd’s fear of Manny.

      It will be very problematic for Floyd to face some one with all these gifts (speed, footwork, southpaw stance, power, combination punches in bunches, strong chin), on top of these gifts, Pacquiao works perfectly with angles, driven primarily by his awesome of footwork.

      Still we know that with Floyd’s brilliance, he will be probably be able to deal with some and maybe most of these threats from Pacquiao’s arsenal. BUT he will DEFINITELY NOT be able to deal with ALL of these threats. And he and his team knows it. He just plainly can’t. And when he loses a fight, Mayweather knows its the end of his charade with greatness and high PPV. And that is what he is trully scared off. It will simply kill Mayweather ego, that is state worst than death for him!

    Nobody can beat Mayweather unless the referee will not allow him to hold, he should have been beaten by Mosley and Maldana had the referee not allowed him to hold…he cannot be knocked out by a single punch and holding is his best defense better that his elbow.

    Frank Walsh,it’s so obvious that you are just a fan like Justin Beiber…or you are just a simple barker of Floyd for how much?
    Think about the real boxing world…first the records that I’m going to evaluate to you.
    1) Who is the only boxer in history that holds the records of 8 Division Championship?
    2) Who holds the records (but not yet on the record) but this is must be on the boxing history,the boxer that send more opponents to their retirement?
    3) Who is the natural Featherweight Boxer in size that dominates Welterweight Divisions?…yeah!,this boxer dominates cause Floyd afraid to test the real acid of his event.
    4)Who is this boxer that make the boxing world exciting in terms of moves in the ring and no fear whoever boxer put infront of him..
    Frank,maybe you had been blinded by his talkies or you are just on his payroll…..obviously.
