Floyd Mayweather: “All Gennady Golovkin does is fight smaller people. Believe me, Andre Ward will spank his ass!”

(Transcribed by Michael Readman) Floyd Mayweather Sr’s son, Floyd Jr, has long been considered the best pound for pound fighter in the world, as he fought many of the best fighters in his era and won every fight. Now that Mayweather has been out of the ring for over a year, many point to undefeated IBO middleweight champion of the world, Gennady Golovkin, as the best and some have suggested that the two pound for pound fighters should meet in the ring at a catch weight to determine who really is the best fighter in the world today.

In part 2 of my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Floyd Mayweather Sr, I get his thoughts on his son fighting at 40 years old and how he thinks his son will do at that age. Mayweather also talks about Gennady Golovkin and the view that he only fights smaller fighters. Additionally, Senior shares his views on who he thinks Golovkin should fight next and what happens in a match between Ward and Kovalev. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to say.

Jenna J: How do you feel about your son having that one last fight, being the fact that he will be 40 years old by the time he steps back in the ring and that’s not an age that’s kind to most boxers?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Well, you’d be surprised, you will be surprised how Floyd will do, you will be surprised. If he gets ready to fight, I will make sure that he’s in there to win, and he will win. I know a lot about boxing and I know a lot of things to do to beat some of these guys that are still out there that are thinking they are gonna be the next Floyd.

Those guys that’s out there, just like I said, I can still get Floyd to do what he’s been doing. I’m telling you, I’m pretty sure of that. I think Floyd can still win against some of those bigger guys that are at a higher stage right now in the boxing game, I think Floyd pretty much still whoop all of them. But he ain’t be out that long though! He’s been out long enough, but he ain’t been off that long.

Jenna J: Well, you mention that maybe Floyd can fight the bigger guys out there. I have to mention this one name. Gennady Golovkin recently fought and beat Kell Brook, who is a welterweight champion. I’m curious if Floyd Jr. would ever consider facing Golovkin?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: What Golovkin needs to do is to fight Ward. That’s who he need to be really fighting. He needs to fight somebody that can fight . He just wants to fight little people or somebody that cant fight.

Jenna J: So you think Golovkin should face a bigger man and not face smaller men?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: That’s all he does is fight smaller people, that’s all hes doing. Believe me, Ward will spank his ass! Believe me. It wont even be a fight. No contest.

Jenna J: So your son would never consider Golovkin because he believes that Golovkin should be facing bigger guys like Ward?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Yeah, I believe that, because anybody just like the guys you’re talking about right now, Kell Brook was probably beating him and stuff but, at the end of the day, even with Floyd, the guy is too big, he can take your punch, you can’t take his punch. He can take your punch, but you really cant take his punch and he can take what you give him but you ain’t gonna be able to take what he gives, and plus he can smother you too. I’m just telling you that it’s not a good break for my son.

You know, I don’t doubt my son on nothing he can do. Kell Brook did it, you see what happened though, he got hit and his eyes closed and he couldn’t see nothing. I’m just telling you that those kind of things can happen. They can happen and they will happen, so I wouldn’t even suggest that. Let him go fight somebody his own size.

Jenna J: Floyd, we were talking about Ward a minute ago. Ward is facing Kovalev in Las Vegas on November the 16th, a fight you may well attend. I’m just curious what you see of that fight? Ward vs Kovalev.

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Kovalev’s undefeated too, isn’t he?

Jenna J: Yes, he’s undefeated.

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Well, guess what? I’m picking Ward. Ward can beat these guys a lot easier than he’s doing, if he would stay in the ring, he would beat these guys even more easier if he could stay in the ring and take care of his business. It aint gonna make a difference anyway, because hes gonna still whoop him. Ward can fight, Ward is good.

  1. what is your point? It’s okey for your son to cherry pick his opponents and not 3ple GGG. lol!!! It takes one to know one.

  2. This dumbass talks without thinking!
    Blah, blah, blah!
Believe me Flomo Sr. Andre Ward will not fight Golovkin becAuse this coming november, kovalev will kick his nigga ass out! Kovalev will annihilate him so fighting Golovkin wont be needed anymore.

    1. This guys interviews are a joke. He said the same thing over and over. Talk about a catch 22 he says GGG should fight bigger guys… Floyd can’t fight GGG because he is bigger than him and might get hurt… Ha-ha what an idiot. What I see is GGG taking fights that come his way that are economically fair and make sense (Eubanks obviously didn’t). Brooks was doing great in their fight it didn’t seem like there was a talent mismatch just a power mismatch because Brook didnt really sit at his new weight long enough to build power. I personally would not pay to see GGG fight Mayweather, Mayweather is retired and should stay there. He had a boring career and frizzled out with his last joke of a fight he should live with that and stay out of the ring. Boxing is better off without him.

        1. Floyd junior ran from his opponents plain an simple. He would fight washed up has been fighters an ran around this ring the whole time. An Pac man had he been healthy an his shoulder not dislocated he would’ve knocked Floyd out probably. If he ever faced GGG it would be his first loss.

      1. Shaun, you are the JOKE. By the way u speak, i can tell you dont know nothing about boxing..U call Mayweather boring, i call your stupid comments boring clown!! I hope you are a girl because u spell ur name like one u idiot.

  3. Wow. Some of you commenters are truly nuts. One guys a straight racist the rest of you are criticizing someone who has forgotten more about boxing than you will ever know. An ex boxer, current trainer, brother of a champion boxer, father of pound for pound the greatest boxer in the world and you couch potatoes know more from watching boxing on the TV? SMH ???

    1. Dude please we all know he runs from people he is fast an he can box he just chooses not to. He runs from his opponents an watching him later in his career was boring an not worth the money his last fight was a joke. He never fights anyone who challenges his style except pacman an he was hurt floyd will always have that stigma of running around the ring from his opponents. A Rocky Marciano he will never EVER be. That was a true champ.

      1. And I guess package man didn’t fight some of the same.fighters after Floyd had already whooped them..funny they never say the fighters are old when pac.an fought them after Floyd only when Floyd beat them..and pac.man and Bradley 3 was worth the the money.. or pac.man vs.algeri..stfu..

  4. Floyd Sr. has brain damage, but his son is just illiterate.Kov will KO Ward and Triple G will defeat Ward and Kovalev.

  5. U Mayweather haters are all some clowns..all of u..a bunch of fools who doesn’t know boxing . You say Mayweather runs but the object of the game is to hit and not get hit jerks. Mayweather should spit in all your faces!

  6. Interesting how people seem to think they know about boxing when they obviously don’t. To start with Mayweather fought anybody and everybody who was anybody in his weight divisions. Even the people he didn’t fight, he beat the people that beat them. His last two fights were a masterclass in boxing. You wanna watch people punch their brains out, go to the UFC. When other fighters do what Mayweather does. You all ho on about that person is skillful with amazing reflexes. Sugar Ray Leonard did the same to Hagler, yet he was called amazing. He beat Canello convincingly, yet you celebrate Canello, Cotton, etc . Enough with that talk about Pacquio, he’s younger than Mayweather. He’s not at the top of his game, neither was Mayweather.
You may not like him but he is arguably the best of his generation. Why should he fight GGG. Why not ask GGG to fight Anthony Joshua, David Hayes or Deontay Wilder.
Y’all a bunch of sheep that have no clue what you’re talking about but jump on the bandwagon of what is fashionable to say. You need to think. If you were a boxer, would you fight like Mayweather or get your brains scrambled?

    1. Very direct and true statement without race being the center of the issue. If they knew or boxed they’d know that the name of the game is hit and not be hit and that how you have longevity in the sport.

  7. Listen up all you mayweater riders, its an absolute fact that he ran from fighters who were good in their prime, that would have beaten him…let’s look at a couple of incidents since a lot of you are jumping on Floyd’s nuts, he ran from mosely in his prime, so much that after one of his fights mosely literally ran in the ring and step to Floyd and ask him when he was going to give him a match, when Miguel cotto was beating blood out of dudes and had nobody else to fight Floyd claimed hell fight him who was the only contender at the time for Floyd but then Floyd says he’s retired then comes out of retirement when cotto loses to margarito when margarito cheated with the plaster in his gloves…now let’s talk about the late Larry merchant who called Floyd out on H.B.O after his fight and told Floyd to his face that he hand pics his fighters Floyd then flipped on an old man I might ad, and murchant told Floyd had I been 20 years younger he’d kick his ass and that’s why Floyd went to showtime…lol you fake boxing fans kill me, Floyd was a boring boxer the majority of his fights went the distance, i promise you this if he even thinks about fighting triple G he’s going to get knocked out that dude is a tech in every aspect of boxing……??????

    1. Dude get your facts straight Shane turned down the fight to fight Floyd when they were both young, you can’t please everybody no matter what he does the media and are gonna rip him apart, he’s beaten everybody in this Era, when he beat Shane Mosley he was too old then afterwards Pacquiao fought him and it was all good, when he beat Canelo Alvarez he was too young ,dude just do some research and stop going by the media primarily white, being a knock out artist doesn’t make you great, he’s one the best boxers hands down look at who he’s beaten, you make not like his style and feel it’s boring the facts don’t lie he’s beaten the top fighters majority when they were top fighters, I don’t necessary like brawlers style but if it’s a brawler that no one can beat and he’s fighting the top fighters gotten given credit, dude its double standards Pacquiao probably last 5 fights have been ridiculously easy even the guy he fights in Nov not saying he wasn’t a great fighter but floyd can’t fight a bum, the facts do your homework or go talk to an older boxing historian white folks hated muhammad Ali when he was young of course because his stands on racism of course and because nobody could beat him he danced and moved around when he was younger and didn’t get hit alot, they didn’t respect his greatness until he got older and sick.

  8. Floyd liked to punch and run, he used that aspect of boxing to his advantage, like he used who not to fight and who to fight, its a fact that he waited until boxers in their prime got older and washed up, I’m not mad that he did that he used a lot of things to his advantage and that is a fact…he saw a way to remain undefeated and that’s why he’s undefeated, not because he was better than his opponents cause mist of the big names he fought were way past there prime and used tactics outside of the ring like hand picking his fighters to keep his undefeated record going lol a lot of you people commenting are delusional, and because you on his bandwagon you talking crazy about other people commenting like y’all really tough guys on the internet, everybody is entitled to their opinion on what they believe or know to be a fact, and it kills me to see fake tough guys come out the woodworks stop it please…

    1. So what I hear you saying is that you don’t quite like MW’s style and you feel he cherry picked.

To those points: I appreciated his style as it’s not an easy thing to emulate. The athleticism, conditioning, and skill it takes is incredible, especially given his age to hit and not be hit – just incredible.

I agree about the cherry picking but then what boxer at that high level doesn’t? I even remember Shane Mosley running in the ring to challenge Floyd (I would’ve liked to see that fight, btw). But did you know that Sugar Shane turned down a fight with Floyd when Shane was considered P4P king and MW was attempting to make a name for himself? At the time it’s was said of Mosley that he was ducking MW.

I contend that at different points over many a storied career some cherry pick to make profit while others do so to ‘tune up’ for an up coming fight and etc.

Concerning styles: I prefer pure boxers over brawlers. I was never a fan of Haglar, Hopkins, or Duran, for example. But more preferred Sugar Say or Ali. Still, I believe a fan comes across less than reasonable or credible if that fan can’t acknowledge a champions’ accomplishments regardless of styles ?

To that end, is it fair minded to imply cherry picking is MW’s standard operating procedure when he’s fought and defeated more champions than anyone else? And somehow deduce from his 49-0 undefeated record that he wasn’t better than the 49 he defeated because he didn’t fight then in what is subjectively considered their.

But then you’re a hay rider yourself as shown by your tearing down champions with nothing more to back it up than your opinion.

Some opinions are best left unstated.

  9. Y’all crazy …….
Tell pacman or canelo to fight triple g
But y’all worried about money may….lol
    What’s the difference?

  10. sr is rough around the edges but makes absolute sense. With GGG’s power he weds to fight someone his size.

  11. This is for the idiot talking bad about Mayweather don’t know anything about boxing if you did you would understand he hasn’t beating everybody in this Era young and old it doesn’t matter who he beats it’s always an excuse the were either too old or too young, he beat Shane Mosley he’s too old but when Pacquiao fought him after him it was ok, when he beat Canelo Alvarez he was too young, call whatever you wanna call it’s all because he young BLACK filthy rich cocky and don’t have t o answer to the white folks, he’s his own boss, never if he was the uncle tom type things would be totally different for him, they would really like him, say what a smart, intelligent fighter he is and so forth

  12. Mayweather cannot be considered the best pound for paund he did fight a lot of good boxer but they not go out with a bang he cherry pick his last fight and all his fight he lost about 2 fight but they gave it to him just because he’s Mayweather I love the guy until his last fight he had to go out with a big bang I really don’t know how he can live with that fight I think he should fight triple G and just stop talking about the guy he is scared that’s why he talks about him does fight him a weather and get it over with you don’t have a chance and you know it to be the best you need to go out with a bang end this is your opportunity just do it
