The fight the world wanted to see did finally happen on May 3rd of last year. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao broke every box office and PPV record, made the fighters more money than any fighters had been paid for a fight in history and it had the sports world’s attention for that night. Sadly the event did not live up to the hype with the actual action that took place in the ring, but even with that disappointment, a rematch is the most talked about fight for either fighter.
In the third and final part of my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Floyd Mayweather Sr, I discuss with him the possibility of rematch and get his thoughts on Pacquiao returning from shoulder surgery. Senior also shares his thoughts on Amir Khan vs. Saul Alvarez bout and gives his prediction for the fight. Additionally, Floyd talks about where the sport is now with his son retired and if he thinks boxing will ever see another fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to say.
Jenna J: Floyd, a lot of people feel that Manny Pacquiao would have to look really good against Timothy Bradley to draw interest in a rematch with your son, due to the first fight with Floyd Jr. being so one sided. Do you you agree with that view?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: What you said is so true. Pacquiao already knows he’s gonna get whooped before he gets whooped. He already knows, the world already knows, what more is there to do?
Here’s a man who knows he ain’t got a chance to win, he wants to sit around and tell lies about him hurting his arm. He never hurt his arm before, but it just happens to be one time that he was fighting somebody that could beat his ass, and that’s why his arm got hurt.
It’s all on my son and what he chooses to do. If he chooses to go back and spank Pacquiao again, that’s what we’re going to do, simple. If he wants to do it again, oh well. I tell you one thing, we sure ain’t fighting these light heavyweights and big middleweights, Floyd’s not trying to fight those types of guys. If Floyd did fight them, he’d whoop all of them for sure.
Jenna J: What do you think of the upcoming fight between Saul Alvarez and Amir Khan?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I think Floyd said that if he decided to fight on that particular date, there’s another problem. Overall I think Canelo is going to beat the hell out of him anyways. Me and Amir are the ones that had words, him and his daddy, he said, “Oh Floyd won’t fight me, Floyd won’t fight me.” Fight you for what? He beat people that have knocked your ass cold, what are you talking about? Get out of here, this man has been stretched so many times it’s pathetic.
Jenna J: Amir Khan said that he’s going to follow your son’s game plan to beat Canelo. Do you think that is possible?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: Nope, no way. We already know what that fight would be like, that fight won’t be but a one sided fight, he won’t get no points. I think Canelo is going to do some bad damage to him, Canelo is going to put something on him, especially if he hits him once, he can forget it. If Amir gets hit with one good shot, he can call it a fight, good night.
Jenna J: Do you think boxing will do fine with your son out of the game now?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I’m gonna tell you right now, anybody that said boxing is not going to have problems, they’re wrong because Floyd was boxing and now he’s not there anymore. He was a man to beat if they want to get beat, he was fast it’s amazing, ain’t no jive, Floyd comes alive. With moves and grooves the fools better recognize who’s the man. I know the fools don’t want to fight even though they came here tonight, but their pockets are looking tight so it’s forcing them to fight. I’m just telling you the truth and that’s the way it is.
Jenna J: In closing, do you think the sport will ever see another fighter like your son?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I’m not gonna say that there can’t be another fighter like that, the only thing I can tell you is that I don’t think it’s going to be nowhere soon. It may not be nowhere soon or it may be never because that’s the way it is. Floyd’s ahead of the game, why do you think he came out with no losses? It ain’t because he didn’t fight nobody, he fought everybody and he beat them all. What can we say? He’s the best, for all the rest there’s no contest.
Stuff your big mouth with this writer’s papers who seem to write nothing but praises to you guys… Shut-up!
