Floyd Mayweather Sr: “Most people don’t think nobody can whoop Floyd. He’s gone way up to 154 and dominating them, that’s a bad man!”

(Transcribed by Michael Readman)During the most recent edition of “On The Ropes” boxing radio, I was joined once again by trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. Floyd spoke in detail about his son’s upcoming bout with Marcos Maidana, and how he believes it will play out. Mayweather also gave his thoughts on the future of his son and if he would be open to seeing his son face Miguel Cotto again, for a middleweight belt. Additionally Floyd talked about his son’s impact on the sport and if he could have ever imagined he would become the star that he is today. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to say in part 1 of his interview.

Jenna J: Floyd, it’s now less than a month until your son’s next fight. How do you feel about the match up he has with Marcos Maidana?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I feel that my son’s gonna win but I don’t only think he’s gonna win, I think he’s gonna stop him.

Jenna J: Why do you think he’s gonna stop Marcos Maidana?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Well because my son’s got all the capable abilities. He has the speed, he has the knowledge, he’s got the know how, he’s got the wherewithal. Hey, that’s it right there. Maidana’s not as fast as him, Maidana don’t move his head, Maidana is a straight headed walker, like a mummy, he’s there to be had.

Jenna J: Floyd, how did you feel when your son decided on Marcos Maidana instead of Amir Khan? Last time I spoke to you, you seemed sure it was gonna be Khan.

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Well, I wasn’t necessarily sure. I said I would like it to be Khan, I told you I didn’t really care for Khan. That’s a personal thing and that will be exploited whenever Maidana gets in the ring with my son.

Jenna J: In talking about that fight coming up with Maidana, odds makers have your son a ridiculously high favorite, as high as 14-1. Do you feel the odds are correct with that? Compared with his last fight he was only a 2-1 favorite?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Yeah that’s because he was fighting with a much bigger guy when he was fighting Alvarez. He’s fighting with a guy whose record states that he’s the bigger puncher and that he’s knocking everybody out and things like that, and he’s a much bigger fighter. Then after the weigh in he’s gonna go eat and make him even bigger but he didn’t know it was gonna make him much slower and that’s what happened.

Jenna J: Floyd, you as a trainer, do you ever watch film of fighters? Do you watch tape or do just take the guys as you’ve seen them in the past?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I believe in looking at fighters — my son don’t believe in that. I’m thinking, let’s see what’s gonna happen before it happens because more than likely ain’t nobody’s gonna change everything.

Some things you’re gonna see that you’ve been seeing all the time. I think it’s very necessary to watch an opponent and see what they got, what they can do and what they have done. I think it’s very important.

Jenna J: Floyd, seeing as you’ve watched some film of Maidana, what did you think of his last fight with Adrien Broner and do you think he has improved since having Robert Garcia as his trainer?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Who the hell is Robert Garcia? Shit, he’s just like the same one who’s gonna get his ass whooped that night. Robert Garcia, who the hell is he? I know he hasn’t boxed, he’s nobody.

Jenna J: Well, he was a former boxer and a former champion.

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Well he’s gonna be a former trainer after this. I can’t say he’s gonna show his face, but hey it is what it is and you know more than likely he ain’t gonna be able to talk about what happened.

Are they speaking about Maidana in some kind of way? Like in a good way like Maidana’s gonna dominate this and Maidana’s gonna dominate that in any kind of way like that?

Jenna J: No, not this time around. I don’t think you’re gonna find many people that really believe Maidana is gonna beat your son.

Floyd Mayweather Sr: You know what, to tell you the truth, and it’s not no boastful thing or a bragful thing, but most people don’t think nobody can whoop Floyd. I’m not saying if you get out of the weight limit and plus if the guy can fight then that’s a difference. What I’m talking about is body within range because there ain’t nobody that has been able to do it, in range.

From 154 lbs, from junior middleweight on down ain’t nobody been able to do it, that’s saying something. Little Floyd, like I told you once and I’ll tell you again, he’s not a welterweight, he’s only a 140 lb. fighter. He’s gone way up to 154 and dominating them, that’s a bad man that’s all I can tell you.

Jenna J: Floyd, you have influence a little bit about your son’s opponents. Would you ever let your son fight a natural middleweight, even if that middleweight came down in weight?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I don’t think that’s looking out for your fighter — let alone your son. That ain’t looking out for your fighter, period. How are you gonna let a guy fight a guy that’s outweighing him, because I’m telling you right now he’s only a junior welterweight. How are you gonna let a guy start off having a 20 lb. weight on your son and then when he goes and eats, he has 35 or 40 lb. weight on your son? That don’t even make sense.

Jenna J: Do you think that would be playing with fire if Floyd fought much bigger guys it would be too much risk where he could get caught?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Well you know, I can’t say that it can’t be done by Floyd. I can’t say that it can’t be done but I’m just gonna say that if it was left to me, it would not happen, that’s all I’ve gotta say. I think even if Floyd chose to do it, that would be on him and I can’t even say that he can’t do it because I might be telling a lie to myself.

Jenna J: There is an upcoming fight that could impact your son’s future, it’s a fight between Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto and Cotto is actually going up to middleweight to fight for that title. Who do you see winning that one?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Cotto is on his way pretty much out I believe. I think Cotto is on his way out. I don’t see too much more he can do, to be honest.

Jenna J: You don’t give him much of a shot against Martinez?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: No. I would like to see him win, don’t get me wrong, I would like to see him win but it’s gonna be tight.

Jenna J: In the case that Miguel Cotto does win, boxing fans are gonna want to see Floyd fight Cotto again in a rematch for a middleweight title. Does that fight interest you even if it was at that weight?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: No, he’s gonna come down to junior middleweight and we’re gonna whoop his ass again, that’s what gonna happen. He’s gonna have to come back where he was if he wanna fight and he’s gonna wanna fight because hey, he’s only getting paid like this by Floyd. So if he wanna fight again he’d better break that weight and bring your ass down and get what you got coming, simple.

Jenna J: Floyd, when you brought your son up and you started him as a fighter, could you ever have imagined that he would be making these kinds of pay days and that people would be paying this much to see him fight?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I tell everybody who asks me about that, I say, “I never imagined that in my life, that my son would be this big and doing what he’s doing.” How many people in the world can say that? Nobody.

I mean, it’s crazy, what can I say? It’s good you know, it’s good that it’s happened because everybody wants to take care of their loved ones and things. Floyd is doing his job; Floyd’s doing what Floyd’s supposed to do. I’m not saying that everyone is supposed to get money, but hey, so far he’s doing pretty good.

Pacquiao-Rios, that’s domination. Tyson-Spinx, domination, Pacquiao-Diaz,Margarito, dela Hoya, domination…. There is a difference between domination and dodging. Domination in boxing means you hurt your opponents real bad, physically. Dodging opponents and sneaking pot shots to win a round is not domination.
