Former world title challenger and current trainer, ‘Iceman’ John Scully is one of the most personable people in the sport. He not only actively chats with boxing fans through social media, but he also hangs out with the fans at the many boxing events he attends. I had a chance to speak with John Scully and in part 2 of my interview with him, I got his fan and trainer perspective of some upcoming fights, discussing in detail Errol Spence vs. Kell Brook and Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor. Here is what John Scully had to say.

Robert Brown: What are your thoughts on the upcoming welterweight showdown between Errol Spence and Kell Brook?

John Scully: It’s a very good fight, I’m actually surprised that Errol Spence is going to England, but I think a lot of times when a fighter does something like this, where they do something unexpected, it’s because they either feel something or they know something about the opponent. My gut feeling is that they either know or feel that Brook is maybe damaged goods from the Golovkin fight. That’s my general consensus.

I’ll say one thing, Brook went up in weight and he looked physically really strong, like he really did a heck of a job physically. The problem is, now he has to come down in weight and lose all that muscle, similar to how Roy Jones did when he went up to beat John Ruiz and then he came down to fight Tarver. If Brook doesn’t come down, if he doesn’t lose that muscle in proper fashion, then he can be in a lot of trouble because Errol Spence to me is the strongest welterweight out there right now.

If Brook has any real difficulty losing that muscle and he loses the weight too fast, he can get overwhelmed by this kid, because this kid is the real deal and he’s very strong. I think a lot of the fight is going to depend on how Kell Brook takes that weight off.

Robert Brown: Who would you be favoring in that bout?

John Scully: If I had to bet, I think I’d go with Errol Spence. I think the timing is more in his favor than the other guy. That’s how I feel, as far as the timing of the fight going in favor of Errol Spence.

Robert Brown: What are you thought on the talks of a Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight?

John Scully: Me personally, I hope the fight doesn’t happen. I would never pay to watch that fight, I promise you I will never pay to watch this fight. It’s going to be ridiculous. I cannot believe that there’s people even in the MMA world that actually think that Conor McGregor could beat Floyd Mayweather, it’s just mind boggling to me.

I know twenty guys that would dominate Conor McGregor in a boxing ring, I have no doubts. I have seen him box on tape and I know amateurs that would be way too skilled for him. If they ever do it, it’s actually going to turn out to be just not eve a sparring session. I can’t even see him hitting Floyd, let alone winning a round.

Robert Brown: Do you think this fight would do irreparable damage to Floyd’s legacy?

John Scully: These types of things are not good for boxing. To me it taints it, it kind of dilutes it. I just wish Floyd wouldn’t even do it because it’s beneath him. It’s beneath him to even compete against this guy, to give this guy an opportunity. It’s clearly a business move, and it’s not for the fans, it’s for fans who don’t know any better.

No real self respecting boxing fan is going to really take this fight seriously. The only ones who are going to watch it and are ultimately going to be disappointed are going to be half way casual boxing fans because they think it’s going to be competitive. It’s going to be very obvious that Floyd is going to carry him, and they will be able to tell that. I don’t think it’s a good look for boxing at all and I wish they wouldn’t do it.
