Peter Fury: “I think Klitschko is up for a Tyson Fury fight so I can’t see any reason why that fight would not take place”

Following Tyson Fury’s definite win over Dereck ‘Del Boy’ Chisora last Saturday, I had a chance to talk to Tyson’s trainer, Peter Fury. I got Peter’s breakdown of how the fight played out and if he expected the fight to be as one sided as it was. Fury also discussed Tyson’s standing in the heavyweight division and his thoughts on possibly landing a big mega fight with current world heavyweight champ, Wladimir Klitschko. Here is what Peter Fury had to say in part one of his interview.

Robert Brown: Tyson Fury had a masterful boxing display against Dereck Chisora this past Saturday. What did you think about Tyson’s performance?

Peter Fury: I’m very happy with it. Nobody had dissected Chisora the way Tyson did. He gave him a perfect boxing display and it just shows you what world class boxing skill can do to somebody who is also on the fringes of the world level himself. It was a masterful, tactical display by Tyson, something that the public has not seen before.

Robert Brown: Did this exceed your expectations for the fight or was this what you expected to happen?

Peter Fury: If you look at my past interviews before the fight, it went exactly as I said it would go. I said that Chisora was not on Tyson’s level and when fight night comes you’re gonna see the difference between a genuine world class fighter and one that isn’t. The class showed on the night and basically the fight went exactly as we planned it and it worked out exactly to plan. I’m very happy with it because it went exactly as we thought it would.

Robert Brown: It seemed as though Tyson could have put his foot on the gas and put Chisora out earlier. Was Tyson’s plan to go out and show his boxing skills?

Peter Fury: He was gonna get the rounds in anyway because he’s been inactive and we just said, “Look, as long as Chisora keeps coming onto the shots, lets just be happy and get the rounds done, lets enjoy the night and also don’t take any chances because there’s a lot at stake.” Basically, he just stayed back boxing and he let the fight go the way we wanted, winning every round and Chisora was getting caught a hell of a lot.

There’s no rush to go in and knock him out and give him a one percent chance. Like I said, it’s an eliminator for a world title and we were very happy the way the fight was going. They pulled him out because he needed pulling out because he wouldn’t have made another round. It was good by the corner to pull him out when they did.

Robert Brown: Do you think it was the right decision to pull him out when they did? Do you think he could have been pulled out one or two rounds earlier?

Peter Fury: Yeah you could argue that, but it only takes one punch in the heavyweight division and they gave Dereck all the chances he could to try and land a big shot but unfortunately, it was just not going to happen. No disrespect to Dereck Chisora but Tyson is on another level and when he boxes, there’s not many heavyweights in the world that can get anywhere near him.

Robert Brown: Dereck too such a sustained beating, do you think he can come back from this loss?

Peter Fury: I think Dereck can come back from it. He’s fought for a world title, he’s fought some of the best men in the division, he’s achieved a lot of status which no other heavyweights have. He’s been a British champion a few times, he’s won the European championships.

Dereck’s done very well for himself in boxing and also financially, so if he wants to bow out at this time, he’s done very well in the sport. If he wants to continue, he’s still a good heavyweight, he can still give many heavyweights trouble out there. It’s just that he came up against a very elite fighter in Tyson. It’s very difficult to judge just how good Dereck Chisora is because he definitely will put up a good fight against anyone.

Robert Brown: There was no over the top celebration from Tyson, was it the fact that you guys know this is only part of the job done and you will celebrate when you have the world title?

Peter Fury: Yeah and also the fact that we know Dereck and his team and we got respect for Dereck Chisora, we like him as a person. We give him full credit for hanging in there and taking the punishment he did for ten rounds. It shows where his heart and determination is, and he wants to be proud of his achievements, he’s done very well in boxing.

Robert Brown: Was it a plan from the beginning of camp to fight southpaw?

Peter Fury: Yes that was the plan we had. I sent for Tyson to come out orthodox in the first round, and then in the second round switch up to confuse him a bit more. It’s not just about boxing tactics and skill, it’s about controlling the other fighter and giving the fighter too much to think about and wrecking their gameplan. More or less it’s just tactical maneuvers to throw the other fighter off, it makes them feel very uncomfortable. They were all parts of the strategy that I used to break down another fighter.

Robert Brown: Was that also a message to Wladimir Klitschko?

Peter Fury: Yes and lets not forget that Chisora boxed Vitali Klitschko and although Vitali Klitschko won nearly every round, Chisora gave him a hard fight — he was on him 24/7. He’s never been broken down in a such a one sided manner in all of his boxing career.

He’s made a statement to show what Tyson can do just relaxed, taking his time and not moving out of second gear. He’s relaxed, he took his time, controlled the distance and Tyson showed what he’s capable of.

Robert Brown: When I spoke to Tyson, he said Wladimir Klitschko would rather vacate the WBO title or retire than fight him. Do you think Wladimir will give Tyson the shot?

Peter Fury: Yes I do. I think it’s all about money and business and the timing. I think it’s a fight that can be made. I think Wladimir is up for the fight so I can’t see any reason why that fight would not take place.

  1. Fury is big and has some skills, but he has no shot against Klitschko. He’s not a powerful puncher, and he don’t have a good chin. Klitschko ko 8

  2. Chirsora is totally done. he got ruined over the rounds and i dont think he will be the same after that beating.
