Former four division world champion and reigning WBO super bantamweight title holder, Nonito Donaire, is looking to continue his career resurgence as he is set to face off with undefeated contender Jessie Magdaleno. The fight is set to happen on November 5th, on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s comeback fight with Jessie Vargas.
In part 1 of my interview with Nonito Donaire, I get his thoughts on his upcoming fight and what he thinks of his opponent, Jessie Magdaleno. Nonito also talks about his training for the fight and how his experience will play a factor in the bout. Additionally Donaire gave talka about his future and if he could see himself facing the winner of Cruz-Frampton II. Here is what Nontio Donaire had to say.
Robert Brown: How do you feel about your upcoming fight and how is preparation coming?
Nonito Donaire: It’s been incredible, it’s a different training session with my new trainer, Ismael Salas. It’s been incredible and we’re very excited for this fight.
Robert Brown: What were the factors in you deciding to change trainers?
Nonito Donaire: I’ve seen Salas train in the Top Rank gym a lot and he’s a very likable person. I’ve seen him training with the likes of Jorge Linares, Rances Barthelemy, Yuriorkis Gamboa and I said, “You know what, I’m going to try him out because he lives in Vegas and I live in Vegas.” We just clicked very fast in the first week.
Robert Brown: Are you worried about anything Jesse Magdaleno brings to the table?
Nonito Donaire: No, I’ve seen it all. I’ve fought guys who are fast, I’ve fought guys who are smart, I’ve fought guys who are in shape, I’ve fought guys who strong, so nothing surprises me. I’ve been in the game for quite a while, so I’m just going to go out there and win this fight. I don’t worry about anything else that he does or the things that he comes out with. I have one objective and that is to win.
Robert Brown: How much does your experience play a factor in this fight?
Nonito Donaire: It definitely is because with my experience, I am very calm and I’m very collected when it comes down to it. I know how to tackle the situation for whatever comes at me. For him, he’s never fought a guy who is on the level that I am. A lot of it is in his head, and I’ve faced a lot of guys who were undefeated in the past and I’ve given them the one. We’re going to do the same thing in this fight.
Robert Brown: Who would you like to fight assuming you get past Magdaleno?
Nonito Donaire: After I get past Magdaleno, I would definitely like to mix it up with the likes of Frampton and Santa Cruz.
Robert Brown: If you get to face Santa Cruz, do you believe that your precision punching will be able to get through and cause Santa Cruz some damage?
Nonito Donaire: The thing about it is, even with Nicholas Walters — who was so much bigger than I was — he felt my punches. Especially with the new trainer that I have and the new fighting style that I will be showing you guys in the fight. No one will be able to contest my style.
Robert Brown: What is your official prediction for your fight with Magdaleno?
Nonito Donaire: My objective is victory, but when I do see an opportunity to knock him out, I’m always going to go for that one. He says he’s going to go for a knockout as well, so we’re expecting this fight to last less than twelve rounds, that’s for sure.
Good luck Nonito! Mabuhay ang sambayanang Pilipno !!!
..I like nonito because he definitely do what he wants. Magdaleno is shooting his mouth up these days even calling donaire past his prime. Believe me, juarez is way tougher than magdaleno, i give him just 4 rounds to mix it up agaisnt donaire no more, no less. Nonito will kick jessie’s vegan ass on fight night!
Go Nonito!! Show ‘Em!!!
