Floyd Mayweather: “I think Canelo wins real good and real easy. He just needs to jab and hook off and Golovkin will never find you!

Trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr, returned to his son’s corner back in 2013 and ended that year with a highly anticipated bout against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. At that time, Canelo was only 22 years old and was outclassed over 12 rounds by Mayweather Jr. in a bout that sold over 2 million PPV buys. Since that fight, Canelo has gained experience in the ring and has become a PPV star in his own right heading into the biggest fight of his career against Gennady Golovkin.

In part 3 of my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Floyd Mayweather Sr, I get his views on the perception that Manny Pacquiao was focused more on a rematch with his son, than Jeff Horn. Floyd also shares his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin and talks about Canelo’s improvement since facing his son. Additionally, Senior gives his prediction for Alvarez-Golovkin and gives his final thoughts on his son’s upcoming fight with Conor McGregor. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to say.

Jenna J: Some people believe that Manny Pacquiao lost his last fight to Jeff Horn because he was not fully focused on that fight and was looking ahead to a possible rematch with your son. Do you think there is any truth to that?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: No, please. He better put who is on his mind when the fight come up, he better put Jeff Horn, that’s who he better have on his mind. I know if he’s got anybody else on his mind, it’s done already anyways. Pacquiao threw some good shots and he hurt the guy one good time but overall, I think he got beaten, I really do.

Jenna J: What are your thoughts on the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin fight? Who do you think will win that match?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I’m gonna tell you this right here, I think Canelo can beat him if he uses his jab a lot and he just moves around and makes sure he stays at a distance from him. Don’t get in close, just keep using the jab. Jabbing to the body, jabbing back to the head, hooking off the jab. I think Canelo can do that too, he can.

Jenna J: So you feel that Canelo can win if he boxes?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Yeah, I think Canelo wins real good and real easy. I think he just needs to box, and like I said, whenever that dude ‘Triple G’ is coming in, you have to keep your hook ready because all you gotta do is jab and hook off and he will never find you, believe me.

Jenna J: Do you think the loss Canelo suffered to your son improved him as a fighter?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: Of course, some fighters get beat and they get beat brutally where it harms them real bad. Canelo fought Floyd and he can’t whoop Floyd anyway, I’m just saying, he can’t whoop Floyd, that’s a fact. I think Canelo is going to do very good.

Jenna J: Floyd says his fight with Conor McGregor will be the last fight of his professional career. Do you believe that?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I hope so, but I don’t care. If he does his thing right here, he doesn’t have to do anything more anyway to tell you the truth. I hope it’s the last one but you can’t tell a grown man what to do when they get to be grown. He was a kid when I was raising him, but he’s a grown man now and he’s making his own decision. You have to let them make their own decisions and do it their own way and let it pan out their way.

Jenna J: What do you want fans to know about the upcoming fight between Mayweather and McGregor? What can fans expect from your son and Floyd Sr. on that night?

Floyd Mayweather Sr: I’m gonna tell you about us. Whatever we got behind the doors, you will all see it after the 26th.
