This Saturday night in Macao, China, the Filipino national hero, Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao, puts his World WBO welterweight title on the line against undefeated and now former WBO World junior welterweight champion, Chris Algieri.
There is a certain controversy surrounding the stripping of Algieri’s strap. Manny Pacquiao 58-5-2 (KO 38 – KO% 60.32) was in a similar situation, also with the WBO when ‘Pacman’ faced off against Mexican hard man Antonio Margarito, back in 2010.
Pacquiao, at the time held the 147 pound WBO belt whilst he stepped up to face Margarito for the 154 pound title (fought at a catchweight of 150). Normally the sanctioning bodies give the fighter the opportunity to decide if and when said fighter wins the new belt at the new weight, they then decide which weight they will choose to defend at. This, unfortunately, for whatever reason, has not happened in the case of Chris Algieri 20-0 (KO8 – KO% 40)
Manny Pacquiao, 35, has not had a KO victory since he stopped Puerto Rican star, Miguel Cotto, back in 2009. It certainly seems that Pacquiao’s ferocious power has not carried up to welterweight and looks unlikely to at any stage. I mean, it’s not like the power was going to keep rising in parallel with ‘Pacman’ as he made his monumental charge through the weight classes, laying great fighters in his wake along his path. It had to stop at some time. On the flip side of that, they say your power is the LAST thing to go. Make of that what you will.
Chris Algieri, 30, is hardly a concussive puncher. He is however, a very slick and highly skilled boxer. Algieri is also a former kick boxing world champion. Last time out, Algieri outpointed the very, very tough ‘Siberian Rocky’ Ruslan Provodnikov. Provodnikov had Algieri down twice in the first round, with Algieri suffering a terrible mouse to his right eye, all but closing the eye. This certainly did not throw Chris Algieri off his game plan. Most would have wilted and shrank, against the juggernaut that is Provodnikov. Algieri stuck to his boxing and got the decision victory over the Russian on the scorecards. This showed huge heart from Chris Algieri and this is why I give the American a good chance against the somewhat declining Pacquiao.
I will attempt to try and make sense of how I have weighed things up.
Pacquiao did not (in my opinion) at any time look like he had Tim Bradley going anywhere near the canvas in either of the two bouts between Pacquiao and Bradley. I will add to that, the fact that Bradley lifted Pacquiao of the canvas, with a shot to the body. Bradley has no real power.
Provodnikov had Tim Bradley seriously concussed (Bradley admitted as much himself) and on the canvas and pretty much out on his feet numerous times in the bout between Bradley and Provodnikov. Bradley is super tough, a great chin. Provodnikov is a lethal puncher.
Provodnikov sparked Algieri to the canvas twice, in the first round of the two mens clash a few months back. Algieri went on to claim a points decision over Ruslan Provodnikov.
Now, bare with me here. If Provodnikov can have the very strong chinned Tim Bradley, basically running for his life around the ring, and Manny Pacquiao couldn’t have Bradley running for his life (Pacquaio did have Bradley running, don’t get me wrong, but not for his life) then how can Pacquiao with his seemingly diminished power trouble Algieri at all, when Algieri took Provodnikov’s best licks and totally out-boxed the come forward mauler?
OK, the fight is at a catchweight of 144 but even so, will that prove to deliver the KO Roach and Pacquiao seem so desperate for? I personally don’t see it. The Pacquiao power is gone I’m afraid and its been gone for a long time.
Lets factor in the advantages Chris Algieri has at his disposal over Manny Pacquiao.
Algieri: Age 30.
Pacquaio: Age 35.
Algieri: Reach 72 inch.
Pacquaio: Reach 67 inch.
Algieri: 5′ 10″ / 178cm.
Pacquaio: 5′ 6½″ / 169cm.
I will add to all of these advantages Algieri has to his benefit, the fact that Chris Algieri is an undefeated professional boxer, and while it has no real effect on the sport of boxing, Algieri is also an undefeated kick boxing world champion. My point here is Chris Algieri DOES not know how to lose. This a huge factor in any sport.
Algieri is also very, very hungry. He believes in himself, that much is crystal clear. I will stick my neck out on this one and go for a points victory on the scorecards for Chris Algieri.
With everything I have mentioned, and especially the betting odds for Algieri, you would be a fool not to take a gamble, in my humble opinion. I am not hating on Manny Pacquiao at all, how could you not like Pacquiao? I just think ‘Pacman’ will struggle with Algieri’s skills over the 12 rounds, at this stage of his long and tough career.
This is the kind of stylistic match up that would serve Manny Pacquiao well, if he was to be going into a bout with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather next time out.
I’m of the opinion that Mayweather and Pacquiao and the whole “will they, wont they” thus far, I kind of think it’s down to if they did fight each other back in 2010 lets say, and one lost by a wide margin or was knocked out cold, that would dent the earning potential of the loser of the fight, in future bouts.
I would not be surprised if both men had an agreement in place to stay away from each other so they can both continue to make good money without facing each other, until possibly their final bout.
Stranger things have happened, especially in the sport of boxing.

BOXING STARS ON PACQUIAO-ALGIERI: PREDICTIONS FROM TIM BRADLEY, PAULIE MALIGNAGGI, BRANDON RIOS, KEITH THURMAN & MORE
Dont mix thing or confused the situation mr.Algieri is young in boxing and not a young man at all,he is 30 years old. Apparently Algieri is food for god boxer.
Pacquiao will KO this DelaHoya wanabe . Algieri will be out on his feet in round 3, and on the floor in round 4, and out in round 5. BET IT.
Hey Mr. Readman, u say Algier doesnt know how t lose?
What does this look like?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7aHx5wzIn0
Your boy got knocked DEAD.
PACQUIAO!!!!
Hey dude. As I said, in the professional game. This is actually an unsanctioned fight.
Algieri fought this cat in the pros and beat his arse man.
Algieri aint my boy mate, I just think he has what it takes to beat Manny at this stage. Manny aint showing me anything that proves otherwise of late. If he had, I would be backing Manny. It basically down to that. I love all boxers, even the annoying ones. Just because I don’t agree with how you see things, or vice versa, does not make someone ‘”My Boy”
Peace dude, good luck to Manny and to Chris tnite. May the best man win.
I will add that the former version of ‘Pacman’ goes through Chris like a knife through hot butter. Easy.
That Pacman doesn’t seem to be around no longer, unfortunately
Well, you just proved yourself wrong. Manny won! LOL
hehehe, there’ll be another pac fight next year, you can try your luck on your next article.
Hahaha
I got you budy…nyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaha ha ha ha! stick your neck out now! nyaaaaaaaaaaaaha ha ha ha ha!
You are plain stupid
It is my belief that Pacquiao will drop this bum like a used CONDOM !
You have a very shallow analysis Mr. Readman, this only mean that you lack of in-depth knowledge about Pacquiao’s boxing records, pacman is used to fight taller guys like Jorge Solis, Antonio Margarito, Oscar Dela Joya, Miguel Coto, etc. they’re all averaging 5’10” in height, these guys were all massacred by Manny. I will wait until fight time if the height and reach advantage you have boasted about your boy Algieri will work on your favor.
Indeed my man, the former version of Pacman.
That man is gone dude.
Manny aint doing shit to nobody, nobody. Why you think he fighting all these lighter weight an lighter punching guys? He’s been knocked the fuck out by Marquez, OK a possibly juicing Marquez, but that kind of levels things up huh.
Why you think Manny aint fighting no punchers now? He got knocked the fuck out by Marquez an his ass got knocked the fuck out in sparring. Why the fuck you think Freddie the joke coach Roach has his ass hidden away downstairs at the basement in the Wildcard? So no muthfucker sees that shit except team Pacquiao.
We know this for a fact.
Fuck outta here with your retarded Lord Pacquiao rhetoric.
Pacman is a legend an always will be but them days of knocking muthfuckers out are gone nigga, so far gone yall ass cant even see man. Take them muthfucking tinted glasses off for a second an get in the real world. The world of getting knocked the fuck out an outboxed by Algieri the none punching weak ass basement dweller….Shit!
Simple.
My respect to Mr.Mayweather Sr. who helped the Goldenboy made his career legendary. He certainly knows what he is saying coz he eats and breathes boxing.
My only wish is for Floyd Sr. helped us open the eyes of Floyd Jr. that Pacman is no longer a myth nor a boxing God that can knock him out cold. As he has said it in plain english, Pac’s power has long gone…
So please tell your son that his understanding of boxing as sweet science is more than enough to beat Manny the mortal Pacquiao. Nothing to be scared at this point.
Mr.Mayweather Sr., l appeal to you, the entire planet is begging, please convince your son to fight Manny. Please let the entire boxing galaxy see this ultimate match.
Plain and Simple.
Boxing Fan
I cannot agree with this blogger on his analysis on Mr. Manny. Sure it does not help that manny is fighting bigger foes making it hard for him to knock them out. But it clearly shows by the way of the battered faces of bigger foes proves Pacquiao’ power. Then Manny shifted strategy. He began to showcase some boxing skills not just brawl. Rememeber that a lot of critics say that Paquiao’s a one dimensional and not a very intelligent fighter. Throw in the fact that he is now a born again Christian and an occassional evangelist ti boot, it is clear he now wants to box and the instinct to put an opponent is not the primary concern. Now those are saying Manny is declining all because he decides to show his boxing skills and some intelligence and on his fights Manny occassional brawls in between tounds just to please fans. Unfortunately, this gives these critics aren’t impressed and in their self-endowed eminence and intelligence, they declared Manny a has been. These critics aren’t impressed because Manny is not AMERICAN or at worst, white. They rather heap praises on boring fights of Mayweather or B-Hopkins.

Pactards will be pactards.
U ass hole will be an ass hole.

watch p8ck hater
You were saying?
Wow everything was so opposite.haha better change profession wanabee! let mayweather fight pac and pac said he wants to fight undefeated fighters so that they would experience defeat!XD
Mr. Readman, Mr. Mayweather Sr. Lets celebrate! Manny just got his ass whooped! Manny keeps running away from Algeiri and his ass touched the canvass 3 TIMES! Your right bought of you, Manny’s a goner I believe you now. Floyd Jr. doesn’t have to fight Manny now coz he’s done for! Algeiri u your the MAN!
you are a pac hater …..come on man see the result of the fight you are a funny guy hahahahaha
you spoke too soon ………..everything you said here goes into your mouth
mr. michael readman must have a very good meal today. he must start eating his own words including his lowly analysis on paquiao vs. algeiri fight.
Wonder what you’re having for dinner tonight……
Your article mister is very accurate…BUT only if your prediction should be taken in reverse order. You predicted exactly the opposite result.
Next time, I will hang around here and wait for your nostradamus-like prediction and then place my bet on fighter you’ll consider has little chance of winning the fight.
I’m not pro-pacman nor pro-algieri myself. I am a fan of boxing, not boxers. Being somewhat of a gambler, I was now hesitant to place my bet on Pacquiao for the same reasons that Mr. Readman narrated. The big question for me was how Pacquiao would deal with all those advantages that Algieri had, at this stage of his fighting career. The author was making an intelligent assessment of the facts at hand, and it just didn’t play out as envisioned. I totally agree with his analysis. Unfortunately, Algieri was inexperienced in huge events like this one. I think he was mesmerized and froze. He trained well ahead than Pacquiao and religiously stuck to the regimen till the end, but the enormity of the event just overwhelmed him. The moment the first bell rang, Algieri hopped on his bicycle immediately after just a tense feeling out minute. He was out of his game, the Algieri we saw against Provodnikov. He performed amateurishly and disappointed fans. Swarzeneger and Stallone took turns going to the men’s room, and entertained themselves at the hotdog counters instead.
Good assessment my friend.
I don’t think Algieri’s corner helped him too much. No plan B at all. You cant let Pacman take the first 4 rounds and then hope to knock Manny out, later in the fight.
I made a few quid from backing Manny to win on points (not mega money, it was a calculated bet).
I didn’t think he had the power to put Chris away. It made me more money than I lost backing Chris to win over the distance.
That was also a calculated bet.
I too, am a lover of boxing over any individual fighter. I love all fighters, (even the annoying ones)
I have respect and admiration for them all.
By now Mr. Readman you already what happened to Algieri? Nice try but I think you should work harder in calling the outcome of the fight… hope you’ll get it right next time. Hahaha!!
This writer is funny.. He knows nothing, now that Algieri has beaten by Pacman what can you say Mr. Readman?
LOL on you Mr. Readmam.
Hey guys, I’m here! I take the shots, I don’t run from my predictions.
Props to Pacman, excellent performance, he has more left in the tank than I thought.
Good luck to Manny, he is a legend, I am NOT a Manny hater guys, I just say what I see.
I love Manny, (no homo) that wont ever change.
I just call the fights with what I see.
Hey, sometimes you get it wrong!
Lets hope the Pacman vs Money fight gets made so we can put this all to bed once and for all.
Check my follow up article soon.
Yes guys, I am eating my CROW!! 😉
Nice try, Mr. Readman. Many so-called -experts already admitted they lost a couple of times predicting the outcome of the game. Hope you have learned your lesson. Manny is an extraordinary boxer just like Floyd. Hope they will fight in the squared ring once and for all. I have been waiting for years.
