Former 2-time junior middleweight champion, Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade is looking to return this fall and he is looking for a big fight at middleweight. Andrade is undefeated, carrying a record of 25-0 (16KOs) and he is regarded as one of the most avoided fighters in the sport.
Demetrius is now 30 years old and is currently a promotional free agent, though rumors suggest he may be joining promoter Eddie Hearn with Matchroom sports. I recently ran into Demetrius and had a brief interview with him to discuss his future at 160lbs and I talk to him about the Canelo Alvarez suspension situation. Here is what Demetrius Andrade had to say.
Jenna J: Demetrius you are looking to return to the ring soon and when you do, you are returning to a division that had some disappointment after one it’s biggest names in Canelo Alvarez received a suspension for testing positive for a banned substance. What are your thoughts on coming back to this division?
Demetrius Andrade: If the Mexican fans need a real Mexican fighter, I can be the next Mexican guy. I represent the United States, in the USA, but the Mexican’s are a fan-friendly advocate of boxing, so therefore I can be that guy for them. I just want to put on the best fights as one of the greats and I want to do great things just like Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin, Pernell Whitaker, and now today, Floyd Mayweather. Floyd Mayweather is one in a million, but if I can carry the sport I am willing to take that role.
Jenna J: You were actually avoided by Canelo back when you were at 154lbs, now that you are at 160, will you be attending the rematch Alvarez has coming up with Golovkin to see about fighting the winner?
Demetrius Andrade: Nah, I don’t support people that use drugs. If you use drugs, I don’t support you. If he needs to try and turn into a robot to beat a human being in a sport that is already deadly, then f*ck you.
Jenna J: So I take it you believe Canelo Alvarez is guilty? His excuse was that he ate contaminated meat, you don’t buy that?
Demetrius Andrade: Three times? I’ve been to Mexico, I ate their food, my tests didn’t change.
Jenna J: Demetrious, there have been a lot of rumors about you and Matchroom sports. Who is going to be your next promoter?
Demetrius Andrade: When it’s time for us to reveal that, everyone will know. For now we will sit back and take my time, continue to stay in shape and be ready for whatever is best for me.
