The trainer and father of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Floyd Sr. has always been out spoken when it has come to his feelings on both Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach. He has questioned Pacquiao’s accomplishments in the ring and also questioned the training methods of Freddie Roach. With Roach winning the trainer of the year award six times and Mayweather yet to receive the same recognition, one has to wonder if 2014 will be yet another year where Floyd comes up short despite his achievements with his fighters.
In part 2 of my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Floyd Mayweather Sr, I discuss with him the lack of recognition he has received for his success as a trainer and if he thinks this year might be the year. I also get Floyd’s views on the upcoming bout between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander and if he thinks Khan would make a good opponent for Mayweather if he were to win. Additionally I get Mayweather’s views on Pacquiao’s six knock downs against Algieri and how he sees Mayweather-Pacquiao going now. Here is what Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to say.
Jenna J: You had a very good 2014, you trained your son to beat Maidana twice. How do you feel about the year that you had and do you think you’re finally going to get the recognition you deserve from the boxing writers?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: It don’t mean nothing to me. They can do what they want to do, they give it to Freddie Roach all the time and he can’t fucking train no damn nobody. Let’s be for real, you can put us both on stage and you’ll find out who’s the best. He’s nowhere near me, he’s not even in the same class, nowhere near. But like I said before, they’ve been giving him all the accolades but I don’t give a damn. You got to go through all that bullshit to get a fucking trophy? Fuck them, I ain’t thinking about them.
Jenna J: Why do you think they always prefer Roach even though some people feel other trainers are more deserving?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I don’t know. I’m not saying because something’s wrong with Freddie but I’m not saying it’s because of Freddie, it’s because of them. It’s them feeling sorry for Freddie and that’s where all that bullshit is coming around.
It is what it is however way you want to do it because either you’re in the game and win — if Freddie Roach would have done what I did this year, hey, there would be no question in anybodies mind that he would get the accolades again. We’ll just wait and see what happens. I thought very seriously that they’d honor me but all they want to do is cheat, steal and all that shit.
Jenna J: The last time we spoke you said you wanted your son to fight Amir Khan. Amir has a fight coming up with Devon Alexander, do you think Amir will get through it?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I don’t know if Amir Khan will get through it or not but I know Amir Khan’s got a glass jaw. I know once you hit it, it’s gonna shatter all over the place. If you hear me Alexander, just do like I told you, hit him on the chin and his ass will be gone. He won’t be around long.
Jenna J: Do you think Amir Khan is even a good opponent at this point for Floyd?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: Honestly, I can’t see Amir Khan getting past anybody. He comes from England but I’m just saying, I don’t see where he’s whooping nobody. Who is he whooping? Who has he whooped? What names has he whooped?
Jenna J: I want to turn things back to a potential Pacquiao-Mayweather match. Based on Pacquiao’s last performance and the way that he looked, how do you think the fight goes down today?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I’m gonna be truly honest with you, I didn’t even see the fight, I never did. I heard that he got knocked down six times, something like that, nine times somebody said, five times. I don’t really know how many times he got knocked down.
Jenna J: Based on what you heard about the performance, do you think Pacquiao is any better or does this not change your mind on how he does?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I ain’t saying he’s better because he knocked down some nobody. Floyd knocked Diego Corrales about six times and Diego Corrales was a good fighter. Floyd knocked him down about six times. It’s only obvious that if they fight, I’m on my sons side so there’s no other way to look at that but one way. I wouldn’t be looking his way just to be looking, but whatever my son said about it, I don’t believe Pacquiao can whoop him anyways, simple as that.
Jenna J: The new year is coming up, what can fans expect from Floyd Mayweather Sr? You got any other projects going on?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I got a couple of guys that are supposed to be coming down here. They’re telling me that one guy is supposed to be weighing 130lbs, supposed to be 6’2. I told them, “Who in the hell are you bringing to me, a skeleton?” A guy 6’2 weighing 130 lbs, my goodness but that’s what they said they’re gonna bring to me so that’s what I’m gonna deal with.
I got another guy coming down next week, we’ll see what happens and check him out, if he has something we’ll let him know, if they don’t have something, we’ll let them know that too.
Jenna J: I recently saw you in a video sporting a new t-shirt with a message from you. A lot of people are asking where they can get that t-shirt. What can you tell us about that?
Floyd Mayweather Sr: I’m planning on getting a whole lot of them made up. The shirt is about $60. You can lay down in them, you can sleep on them and they don’t wrinkle or anything. They got the most glossy color and the colors don’t fade. It makes you look like yourself. I’m going forward with that.
Jenna J: Well I know I would be interested because “Don’t worry about the rest because you’re training with the best”
Floyd Mayweather Sr: Look here, that poem right there, a guy told me, “Floyd you didn’t give me no poems so I had to come up with that” and I told him he did a good job.
