Gennady Golovkin demolishes Rubio in just 2 rounds. Will Miguel Cotto be next?

This past Saturday night at the StubHub center in Carson California, Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin defended his IBO/WBA Middleweight title belts against the hard punching Marco Antonio Rubio. The bout was expected to be one of the toughest in Golovkin’s title reign, as Rubio had withstood heavy handed fighters like Julio Caesar Chavez Jr and David Lemieux, but as the fight unfolded it quickly became clear that ‘GGG’ was something that Rubio had never faced before.

Gennady Golovkin wasted no time and began stalking Rubio from the start of round one. Rubio did not look intimidated and landed a couple of solid left hook to the body of the unbeaten Golovkin. ‘GGG’ landed a hard combination in the later part of the round but Rubio seemed to take the shots well and fought back.

Golovkin followed up on the success he had in the first round and immediately attacked Marco Antonio Rubio in round two. Golovkin was landing thudding shots which pushed his opponent back. Keeping the pressure on, ‘GGG’ landed a right uppercut which stunned Rubio, then followed with a looping left hook that sent Rubio crumbling to the ground and left him unable to make the count. Gennady Golovkin KO 2.

Golovkin shared his thoughts on the fight in a post fight interview and said, “I like the fight, this was a true fight. Rubio does not step back, he’s a good fighter. I respect him”

When asked about his future Golovkin replied, “Look at me, I have three belts. I’m staying here, I want to fight everybody. I think next year, the next fight I’ll fight with great champions….I think first with Miguel Cotto. I respect him, he’s a great champion.”

One fight of interest posed to Golovkin was a potential fight with Canelo Alvarez, to which Golovkin was very much open to it, “Of course, I respect him, he’s a good boy. Chavez Jr too I want to fight”

Gennady Golovkin proved once again that he is one of the most dangerous and exciting fighters in the sport and with each knockout win he inches closer to a big fight that could make him a PPV attraction. For now Golovkin remains must see TV and if he follows through with his planned 4 fights in 2015, he will surly increase his already growing fan base.
