Jeff Mayweather: “Floyd’s not going to allow Adrien Broner to make eight to ten million dollars off of him!”

Former IBO featherweight champion, ‘Jazzy’ Jeff Mayweather is known his work as a boxing trainer and also for being the uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Jeff has been referred to by fans and media as the quieter of the Mayweather brothers, but he has never been one to hold back on his opinion. In my interview with Jeff Mayweather, I get his thoughts on Adrien Broner’s recent call out of his nephew and views on where Broner career would be without Floyd. Mayweather also talks about Pacquiao vs. Bradley 3 and gives his prediction for the bout. Additionally Jeff shares his thoughts on a potential Pacquiao-Crawford fight and who would win in that match. Here is what Jeff Mayweather had to say.

Robert Brown: Adrien Broner got a victory over Ashley Theophane last week and then he proceeded to call out Floyd Mayweather. What were your thoughts on that?

Jeff Mayweather: What happened was exactly what I thought would happen. Don’t get me wrong, Adrien Broner is no different than any other fighter that wants to get an eight figure dollar payday. Of course he would call Floyd out, why not?

Robert Brown: Would Adrien have gotten where he is and would the public even care who he was without Floyd Mayweather?

Jeff Mayweather: I don’t really think so, I think that his whole career and everything about him was based on trying to be the image of Floyd. The one thing about it is that it actually worked for him, even though he’s a loose cannon outside of the ring, it’s still working for him because he’s made it where people hate him so much that they’ll just come see and hope that he gets beat and that’s always good for a fighter because that means that people are paying. And as long as people are paying, he’s going to continue to make good paydays.

Robert Brown: Do you think Floyd would even entertain the idea of a fight with Adrien Broner?

Jeff Mayweather: Of course not. The one thing he’s not going to do, he’s not going to allow Adrien Broner to bring him out of retirement and make money off of him. That’s the one thing, Floyd’s not going to allow Adrien Broner to make anywhere from eight to ten million dollars off of him, he’s not going to do it.

Everybody that knows anything about boxing knows that realistically Adrien Broner has no chance anyways, so what’s the point of it? If he loses to Floyd, so what? Everybody else did too.

Robert Brown: What do you think about the Pacquiao-Bradley fight that’s coming up? Do you believe it will be the same as the first two?

Jeff Mayweather: Yes, I think that this fight isn’t even about Pacquiao or Bradley because to be honest, nobody even cares. When it first happened, it was a big deal. The first fight was entertaining, the second fight was boring, no one really cares. Then what Pacquiao said about gays, all that did was kill the fight even more.

It’s one of those situations where in order for that fight to happen and even try to put it on pay-per-view — it should be on free TV — they’re basically trying to build the fight by building the reputation of the trainers. Two top trainers going against each other, and whether Teddy Atlas has made a great change, and he really hasn’t, he was just in there with a guy that has been in so many wars and it was just time for him to cash it in, and that’s exactly what Rios did.

Robert Brown: If Teddy Atlas wasn’t in Tim’s corner, would this fight even be happening at all?

Jeff Mayweather: I wouldn’t say that it wouldn’t be happening, because I think Pacquiao has a choice of who he wants to fight. Maybe because he has a loss to Bradley he would want to fight him again anyways. I think the fight could have still happened but I just think that with Tim having a new trainer, that just gives them something else.

Robert Brown: Assuming that Pacquiao gets by Bradley, do you think he will have a final fight against someone like Terence Crawford or do you think he will pack it in and retire?

Jeff Mayweather: I think he’ll pack it in and retire, he definitely doesn’t need any more money, so there’s really no need for him to fight again. If Pacquiao is going to fight anybody, it would be Floyd again because no one else is going to bring that kind of money to him, or even close to it, unless he goes up to fight Canelo.

I don’t see him wasting his time fighting some young kid who is much bigger than him, much stronger than him and has a great chance of beating him but with no gain or reward. The only person that gains in that situation is Crawford.

Robert Brown: If Pacquiao did fight Terence Crawford, do you think Crawford would beat him?

Jeff Mayweather: I think so, I think Crawford is one of the hottest young fighters out there right now. I think that he just needs a big name to actually help raise his stock as one of the future stars of boxing.

Crawford beat Gamboa, he’s beaten a few decent fighters but he still hasn’t had a marquee name to take him from the background to the forefront and that’s what he needs. But Pacquiao’s not going to take that kind of a risk. Everyone wants to go out a winner, and I think that the fight with Bradley is a safe fight and that’s what he’s going to do. He’ll probably take that fight and retire.
