Lucas Browne: “I think it’s about time Deontay Wilder gets one put on his chin and everyone sort of finds out what he’s really about”

I recently had a chance to speak to #5 ranked WBA, WBC, IBF heavyweight contender “Big Daddy” Lucas Browne. Browne is undefeated with a record of 22-0 (19KOs) and is coming off of an impressive victory over former contender Chauncy Welliver. Lucas speaks on his most recent win, and talks about his future in the heavyweight division. Browne also talks about potentially facing Wladimir Klitschko and who he would like to fight next. Additionally Browne gives his thoughts on Mayweather-Pacquiao and who he would pick to win that fight. Here is what Lucas Browne had to say.

Robert Brown: You scored a win over the durable Chauncey Welliver last month, how do you feel about your performance?

Lucas Browne: It was a good performance in regards to me getting together a few little things that I’ve been practicing this year. He was an awkward fellow, in regards to him turning southpaw and things like that, so it created a little bit of frustration in the first few rounds.

Once I figured out what I was doing by the third and fourth round, it was all over from there. I was very happy with the performance as a whole but there’s a lot more learning to come.

Robert Browne: To be able to do a performance like that against a guy that’s never been knocked off his feet, did that give you some satisfaction to be able to do a performance like that?

Lucas Browne: Yeah well and truly. I still would have liked to have put him on his ass and I think if it went another round it would have happened but full credit to him for staying in as long as he did.

I believe he may have had a fractured eye socket, so I’m sure that didn’t help him in any way but that’s just the beauty of myself, having the power to be able to stop a fight like that. It’s just a matter of me now working on the fitness and technique to continue with the bigger boys.

Robert Brown: How did you and Jeff Fenech get together and why did you decide to employ the services of Jeff at this stage?

Lucas Browne: Basically, I’ve had a few trainers here and there that haven’t been world class and I haven’t learned as much as I would like to, that’s why I made the move back from Perth over to Sydney to work out with Jeff. It was just a nice little Facebook conversation and then we had a phone conversation and he had a few things to offer, obviously the man can talk.

He sold a good sell to me and we’ve hooked up since then and the thing that I like about Jeff is he’s got knowledge to burn sort of thing, he’s got the connections all over the place but I actually listen to him at the same time.

One of the things that I’ve had trouble in the past was that myself and the trainers didn’t really see eye to eye or I thought that maybe I was a bit too experienced than what they were, so I didn’t want to listen to what they were saying because it just didn’t make sense. I know he has a thousand times more experience than I do and he’s only a little fellow but for some reason I just sit there and listen to him like a little schoolboy, so it’s great.

Robert Brown: Who are you looking to target next?

Lucas Browne: Personally, I would like to target people like Ruslan Chagaev who currently has the WBA world title. That will basically put me in place to fight Klitschko for the bigger titles. People like Tyson Fury, I think everybody in the UK would love to see that fight.

From an American point of view, I think Deontay Wilder would be a great fight for me because he’s 32-0, 32 KO’s — he hasn’t faced the highest quality of people but I think it’s about time he gets one put on his chin and everyone sort of finds out what he’s really about. From my point of view, that’s what I want.

Robert Brown: Lucas, I’d like to change things up for a few minutes and get your thoughts on a hot subject in boxing today. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Do you think that fight will ever happen.

Lucas Browne: I don’t know, obviously everyone wants to see it and I think it will be the biggest money maker in the history of boxing, so why not? Everything is pointing towards a positive for it to happen, but I think it’s maybe Mayweather wants to keep his record as a zero and I think Pacquiao might be too much of a threat to that.

Robert Brown: Do you think that’s the reason that Mayweather is hesitant to fight Pacquiao? And if you had to put your money on one of them, who would you pick?

Lucas Browne: Yeah I think the only one that is a threat is Mayweather is Pacquiao, for sure. I’d probably still put money on Mayweather, he’s just too slippery

Robert Brown: Back to yourself Lucas. Given the fact that Australia hasn’t had many serious heavyweights over the years, do you revel in that pressure and feel pride to be a serious Australian heavyweight?

Lucas Browne: To be honest, there’s no pressure. I’ve done about twelve years of security on the doors as a bouncer, so when it comes to being in a controlled environment in a ring with a referee, I’ve got no problems whatsoever with any of that, so that’s sensational.

In terms of the pride aspect, I want to be able to represent Australia, represent my family. I want my kids to be able to look up and say, “Yeah that’s my dad,” and be proud of things that I’ve achieved and look back at their lives and aspire to be like their dad. Things like that are what drive me and what pushes me further.

Also, I just want to be paid. We do all this for the love of it but at the same time we can’t pay the rent with nothing, so we want to be able to buy a house and just live the dream at the same time.

Robert Brown: You mentioned a desire to eventually fight Klitshcko in the future. How can you break the code, what can you do against Klitschko that the other fighters can’t?

Lucas Browne: The thing that people continuously do is try and box him. You don’t try and box someone who’s perfected his art over the last ten years and does it to perfection. My gameplan would be to come in at the lightest and fittest I’ve ever been — I’m looking at 112 kilos.

I’ve been fighting at sort of 120 kilos for a while, I think if I can come in at about 112kg, have the agility but still have the strength and the speed and power, and basically just school yard bash him. There’s no technical thing about it. Use the power, get in underneath, push him up against the ropes, bully him around and just bash him.

Robert Brown: Do you think the key to fighting Wladimir Klitschko is getting on the inside, which fighters have failed to do up until this stage?

Lucas Browne: Definitely, he sort of keeps that left hand out as a measuring stick so to speak. I think that alone gives him the advantage because he stays up nice and tall, he’s got good footwork and he stays at the right distance. I think if you sit there and bash that arm a little bit, or at least get it out of commission, you’re opening up a few more chances for the right hand, you can do more inside work. He’s very good also at coming to a clinch, so I think a nice little wrestling background like myself would come in very handy there.

Robert Brown: Do you think your background would help you in terms of getting on the inside and working Klitschko’s body?

Lucas Browne: One hundred percent. I’ve got no problem whatsoever, I feel very comfortable in a clinch or in close. There’s a lot of people who stray away from that or like Klitschko does, he actually comes up and holds, so he doesn’t do anything while he’s there. Some peoples’ whole gameplan should be to get in close and actually try to capitalize while you’re in close to throw those body punches and uppercuts.

Robert Brown:In closing Lucas, what do you think Hatton promotions plan is for you in 2015?

Lucas Browne:In regards to Hatton’s plan, I think they want me to have a defense of the commonwealth title. I’m not too sure who against, I think it may be Gary Cornish at this stage, he’s from Scotland I believe, and hopefully Ruslan Chagaev as well. They’re pushing for the Chagaev front but also having the commonwealth title defense. I don’t know, I don’t even have a date about anything but definitely early in 2015.

  1. Browne is a ok heavyweight and he is right about Mayweather being worried of risk. I got to be honest here though I think Pacman would ice this guy, as he is club fighter level.

    1. OK fist of all may setting the date for may 2 in public so how is that being afraid of a lost? Bob arum walled out on at least 3 negotiations but he doesn’t have the balls to walk away from this one due to pac money issues

    2. Too much talking, money is there, all conditions, forget statistics, just fight just beat each other for us to know on that day who is right.

  2. A coward is a coward is a coward. He who has a thousand and one excuses not to fight a boxer is a coward is a coward is a coward plain and simple!!!

  3. I do believe Floyd is worried to have a loss in his record. But what good is a perfect record when he
is reluctant to face the best challenges that come along the way. The record seems meaningless.
With that attitude , can he be considered to belong to the level of Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis and the like? No, I don’t think so.

  4. Based on the articles I read, it seems that the date May 2, Mayweather picked will be in conflict with the Cotto-Canelo fight (which is an HBO fight), which if not followed will be a ground for this fight to not happen again. To really secure that Mayweather will not have an excuse not to fight Pacquiao, why don’t HBO/Arum and Showtime/Mayweather put a boxing event with Cotto-Canelo and Mayweather-Pacquiao on it, this will be great for the fans and will be sure hit and a mega-boxing event of all time. All walks of people will surely buy the fight, especially the Latino community since this is their “Cinco de Mayo” festival season, they can raise the PPV price if they want to, its reasonable. THE GOAL IS NOT TO GIVE MAYWEATHER A CHANCE TO DUCK PACQUIAO AGAIN, COZ FOR SURE HIS MONEY DEMAND (FOR HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THE FIGHT WITH PACQUIAO) WILL BE SATISFIED WITH THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THESE TWO GREAT FIGHTS WILL BE GENERATING. ITS ABOUT TIME THAT THE BOXING FANS TO BE GIVEN A TREAT LIKE THIS, THROUGH THE YEARS OF BUYING BOXING PPV WHICH MOST OF THEM ARE NOT SO ENTERTAINING, MOSTLY FROM MAYWEATHER FIGHTS. PEOPLE ARE JUST WATCHING TO SEE HIM LOSE. LIKE PACQUIAO SAID, HE — USES “HUMBUG” TO SELL HIS FIGHTS AND MAKE HIS FIGHT EXCITING.

    1. I like the idea but will Mayweather like it?….I don’t think so….that will be his excuse for now.

    2. May had that date for how long now? That’s nothing new . your talking about excuses he’s still fighting on that date so all Manny has to do is sighed or watch Floyd fight someone else. So where is the conflict? Bob arum does not own that date no fighter does, there no conflict see which fight the public prefer to see cotto vs Alvarez or mayweather vs pacman? Then choose your fight

  5. Mayfag is a waste of good oxegen !

He and the rest with his family name should all be forced from the planet .

    1. You are such a waste!!! The way you talk, this is every thing to do with race an nothing to do with boxing. You are exactly what’s wrong with the world today. You believe what the media says he offered Manny 40 million an he turned it down. Stop worrying about his lifestyle an worry about him beating Pacman. You thought Canelo would beat him then what happened. Any boxing veteran analyst will explain to you the what Pacman leaves himself open he is susceptible to the right hand in the (poctket) an after an adjustment in a round or too, Mayweather will Box!!!! his way to a comfortable unanimous decision just remember floyds bigger an stronger than you think. Here’s some FACTS!!! CHECK THE LAST SIX FIGHTERS RECORDS THAT FLOYD HAS FACED, THEN check Manny Pacquiao last five fighters recorods. Had floyd beat up Algeris He’d have more hell to pay!!! Admit it!!! Young black an rich an you hate it because you worked all your life an don’t have anything to show for it except the hate in you heart. Just need an excuse to hate!! Turn the mirror on yourself, Like what you see??? I’m putting you out with the Trash you are. Let’s get back to Boxing!!! that’s what this site was solely created for, not racial Your profiling. If you can’t talk boxing stay off the BOXING site!!!!!

  6. What people dont understand. Is money may is preping himself for this fight.trust me its gona happen as soon as the mula get right everybody think that the money team scared when that shark come out the water he gona eat packy azzzz zup lmao it wont last 9 rounds

  7. i wonder why floyd is not fighting this small, exposed, level B fighter, lot of problems in life, poor with huge debt on taxes, slow,no more knock out punch and keep bringing the u,s dollars out of u,s which floyd really hates. So ,why not fight and give a heavy punch just like JMM did and bring this guy into retirement so that he will stop bringing the u.s dollars to the phil.AND END HIS ERA IN BOXING AND NEVER BE REMEMBER!!! MR.FLOYD PLEASE FIGHT THIS DWARF AND END HIS FAME.HE’S NOTHING!!

    1. You called pacman dwar. I don’t wanna say anything. Lets bring it on…then I talk after the fight..ha!

    1. Manny can’t hurt Floyd, Oscar hits harder in that weight division then Floyd, we already know that Manny can’t take a punch we already seen Floyd rocked and recorpoate yet we seen Manny knocked down off of a pop shot before getting knocked out

  8. you know I get sick and tired of people saying that Floyd Mayweather has never fought anybody. Floyd Mayweather has beaten boxers like Zab Judah, Sugar Shane Mosley, Canelo Alvarez, Robert Guerrero,Victor Ortiz, oh and not to mention the guy that knocked out Manny Pacquiao, Marquez. and he totally dominated that fight. so I say to those that really know boxing, really is this the fight that we really want to see or could it be that fight fans/ Mayweather haters pray that this guy is the only one that might and I mean might have a chance of winning. the only chance that Pacquiao has of beating Mayweather is if its two pacquiaos in the ring at once. my question to you is once he beats Manny Pacquiao then what? Danny Garcia? Amir khan? Lol!

  9. If Floyd wasn’t black, would you still back him? Just cause he is black and you are black doesn’t mean you have to like him. If he were Asian,

    1. look man this is boxing this has nothing to do with race. if Mayweather was a white man yes I will root for him if Mayweather was Hispanic I would root for him if Mayweather was any other race I would root for him because he’s a great fighter not because he’s black white Hispanic or any other race. why does race have to be implemented in everything that we do or say these days. I’m a black man and Dale Earnhardt was one of my favorite race car drivers it had absolutely nothing to do with his race. let’s not let the whole world know how immature you are….

    2. Knocked that bs off in America we have lots of black champion but you’re point is moot because I haven’t seen one Asian going for Floyd, I like Manny, JMM, Oscar, tito etc. I guess I like Larry Holmes more than I do Larry Holmes because he’s black. Your the type that society doesn’t need, just go away

  10. Seriously. Floyd isn’t ducking anyone. Yiu guys also said Money was ducking Canelo, Marquez (pacman fought this one), Ortiz, De la Hoya, Shane Mosley, Cotto, and Maidana. Its getting OLD haters.

    1. Manny is a different monster. Relentless and overwhelming. Manny would keep the pressure on him and could win on points or K.O. Floyd would fight a cautious fight while Manny who reminds me of Aaron Pryor to some extent would keep it coming.

    2. All the comments i read seems full of emotions coming from mouth or mind hopefully its not from your heart. Boxing is always a boxing, one will be defeated by another, in the of case of floyd and manny one of them i can say….one of them is an athlete and the other is a real fighter, now these business man including both camps are involved in making or generating a huge $. I agree with other comment that floyd wants to know keep his excellent records 0 loss…..it is his right!, manny is great FIGHTER im sure even no $ involves just for the sake of boxing history he will fight floyd (it is sick idea huh) bcoz what you have in mind is $, even the comment of mr economist manny is bringing $ to Philippines i smile bcoz before you exist in this world america bringing out $ outside, if still ur in the right state of mind figure it out. Whatever comments we have fight might happen dollars, euro, yen and other currency will be generated in all parts of the world at the end one will still be a fighter and an athlete, both will have $ in their pockets spend how they want it pay tax, gamble, donate, invest. How you who is reading this comments of mind what do you have? another comments?

  11. This is one of the silliest things I’ve ever heard.I don’t believe Floyd has been knocked out or defeated why would He be afraid of the Pacman a steroid taker.

  12. Pacquiao has no chance of defeating money. People would love to see that happen, but Floyd is just to damn skilled of a fighter to let a smaller boxer land shots on him. Manny will get tired of chasing him around the ring; and, then goes to the bam bam bam stick and move. Paca gets hit and slap his gloves as usually and he will get knocked out the f$$$ out.

  13. Bigkev I agree with you 100%. Haters will be haters all day long. People will make excuses when he defeat this bum.

  14. This tattoo fool never heard of him. He is not ready for the klisko guy. All talk trying to sell a fight. Who made up his record? Where’s he from. He couldn’t beat Floyd himself. Tattoos to look like a bad guy. Fake record must be dealing with don king making up records.

  15. Sad day in2014 we still got people still racist as ever. I wish I could see you coward ass hillbilly I would beat that sheet off your punk ass, says this nigga…
