Former boxer, Micky Ward, is one of the most well known boxers to come out of the state of Massachusetts. Hailing out of Lowell, Ward was most known for his trilogy with Arturo Gatti, and also for the 2010 film “The Fighter” which was a biopic about his boxing career starred by Mark Walburg. With this weekends’ upcoming Premier Boxing Champions bringing back championship boxing to the Boston area, Ward recently joined media members and the fighters of that event at the historic Fenway Park.
I had a chance to briefly interview Micky Ward while he was in attendance and talk to him about boxing returning to Boston. Ward also talked about the event itself and what fans can expect from the main event. Micky also gave his thoughts on the recent Mayweather-Pacquiao fight and shared his views on this fight card appearing on free television. Here is what Micky Ward had to say.
Jenna J: Micky, you are at Fenway Park for press conference for the fight between Andre Dirrell and James DeGale, what do you think of this fight being in Boston?
Micky Ward: It’s great for the sport, it’s great for the city, it’s great for both fighters. It’s for a world title, it’s going to be a great fight, it’s going to be a great night.
Jenna J: Are you surprised that it’s taken this long for big boxing to return to Boston?
Micky Ward: Yeah it’s taken a little while, but at least it’s here now. So hopefully it’s here and it stays here.
Jenna J: Fight wise, Dirrell vs. DeGale what do you expect in that fight?
Micky Ward: I expect a great fight, I expect a great tough fight.
Jenna J: People are saying this event on free TV could take the taste of paying $100 for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight out of their mouths. What did you think of the Pacquiao-Mayweather event?
Micky Ward: It went like I probably thought it would go. Pacquiao, he’s just a great fighter, he’s a Hall of Famer, but Mayweather is just a different breed, he’s the best, the best of our generation.
Jenna J: This fight between Dirrell and DeGale being on free TV, is it making up for that other event?
Micky Ward: We will see come Saturday night. But this fight on paper is going to be a great fight, I think it will be a excellent fight. I think it will bring all the people back to the game that kind of got bitter over the Mayweather fight. It’s not even the fighters fault, Floyd’s just Floyd, he adapts to anyone’s style. It’s not Floyd’s fault, it’s just the way it was.
Jenna J: In closing, what’s the latest with you? Are you still training fighters?
Micky Ward: Me, I’m just myself and I’m just like me. Not training fighters right now, too many injuries.
