Nonito Donaire nearly upset by Vic Darchinyan. Has the blue print to defeat Donaire already been written?

Nonito Donaire and Vic Darchinyan met in a rematch 6 years in the making this past Saturday night at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. The second fight, much like the first ended with Nonito Donaire coming away with a thrilling stoppage win, but besides the ending of the bout, the two fights could not have been more different.

Donaire, who was a heavy favorite to win the bout, was consistently getting beaten to the punch, being outboxed and was losing the fight on two of the official judges scorecards. The first round of the bout started with the now 37 year old Darchinyan coming out much differently than we have seen in previous fights, as he was carefully choosing his shots and seemed cautious of Donaire’s left hand that had halted him in the first bout.

After a close first round, the second saw much of the same ring action, as both fighters were not engaging, until half way through the round Donaire landed a solid right hand that wobbled Darchinyan, and caused him to fire back and excite the crowd. The third saw Darchinyan regain his composure and start to land clean, well timed punches on Donaire and this would be the start of what would be a repeating theme through the night.

Donaire looked sluggish, and seemed unable to pull the trigger, and aside from the second round, he appeared to lose the majority of rounds leading up the the ninth. Darchinyan’s improvement in both defense and boxing ability had him leading 78-74 on two of the scorecards going into the ninth round, and it seemed that Darchinyan was on his way to a huge upset victory.

Before the start of the ninth, the urgency in the corner of Donaire was clear, as Robert Garcia pleaded with his fighter to throw more punches and seemed concerned that time was starting to run out. At the beginning of the ninth round Donaire started faster and was getting off a bit more, boxing on his toes and looking to land a big shot.

The shot would come before the half way mark of the round and it stunned Darchinyan and got him defensively firing back and that ultimately set up the left hand counter that floored the “Raging Bull” and had him getting up from the shot on shaky legs. After the knock down, it seemed only a matter of time, and while Darchinyan tried to move and hold, he found himself caught in the corner under heavy fire. After two constitutive left uppercuts, the referee wisely decided to stop the fight and Nonito Donaire escaped with the TKO 9 victory.

With the stoppage win Donaire keeps his name among the top fighters in the world, but this fight here showed that his climb back to the position he was in before the Guillermo Rigondeaux loss will be a long road, as it appears that the blueprint on how to beat Donaire has already been written, and if a fighter like Vic Darchinyan who has never been known for his boxing skills can follow it and nearly succeed with it, then other more talented boxers in and around the division can too.

Some will say that Nonito Donaire lacks the motivation to be at the top, or will claim that his performance is a sign of decline, but the reality of the fight was that Vic Darchinyan fought well and was more controlled than he had ever been in his career and deserves credit for his performance. While he came up short in his effort, he showed that with the right game plan, and a certain amount of discipline, that Nonito Donaire is quite beatable by a number of opponents out there, and it’s just a matter of time before another fighter follows the blueprint to defeat him once again.

    Stupid article. Stop writing.

Truly is an stupid article, From start of the fight, Donaire has been iterating the same counter left hook which off course Vic already knew that punch, However his father and Robert did not see the straight right hand that landed flush during first or second round. If Donaire just realized to use the st right hand earlier more in the fight it could have ended early.

    • shawn rey says:

hes just explaining what happened? that is a fair article…theres no stupidity in it its just an analysis of boxing. anyone that understands boxing will not comment like that, a stupid comment

      • Jason Aquitania says:

Firstly, how can you even ask/say that darchinyan uncovers blueprint to defeat donaire while Donaire already defeated by Regondeaux? Then there was the nearly upset by darchinyan? You could say that if the fight was close or the fight ended up with a split decision.

        Exactly!

Exactly! The article is on point about the fight.

Anybody that is saying the writer of this article is bias or don’t know what she’s talking about are in denial and bias themselves! I’m a donaire fan but I’m not a delusional fan. She’s just pointing out that donaire is very beatable and he is. We all know he won the fight by knockout but he looked awful last night against a washed up Darchinyan! Now she’s clearly stating that if a shot fighter like Darchinyan can execute that game plan and damn near win (because he was winining before the ko) imagine if it was a fighter that’s more talented than Darchinyan use the same blueprint. That will be Donaire’s 3rd loss and I think she right!

your exactly right, there are many who likes to comment harsh and very offensive because they are so narrow minded people..i dont know why

Jenna J, what the flying frack are you doing outside the kitchen?!?!? Get back in there and fix me a sandwich. Then clean my pipe when you’re done. Oh, and stop this stupid nonsense about your dream being a boxing writer. It’s satan’s way of distracting you from doing what you know best.

  2. jojiezappy says:

How can that be a blueprint to beat donaire when darchinyan lost using that blueprint? If you want a template to beat nonito, look at the rigondeaux fight.

    • shawn rey says:

the article is right, hes just explaining that nonito is beatable so that we should be wary about it..and nonito himself can learn from it..be a broadminded guys, dont be stupid

    • GuyWhocares says:

Try to read this paragraph again:
“With the stoppage win Donaire keeps his name among the top fighters in the world, but this fight here showed that his climb back to the position was in before the Guillermo Rigondeaux loss will be a long road, as it appears that the blue print on how to beat Donaire has been written and if a fighter like Vic Darchinyan who has never been known for his boxing skills can follow it and nearly succeed with it, then other more talented boxers in and around the division can to.”

My understanding is that, the writer was indirectly saying that Darchi utilized the same blueprint in the Rigondeaux fight – boxing. I saw Donaire very tentative with his punches and look sluggish maybe due the flu he suffered before the fight.

IMO, big punchers like Manny and Donaire were realy having trouble fighting intelligent boxers.

the darchinyan fight is almost the same with the rigondeaux fight, nonito was outboxed and behind on points…and only rigondeaux managed to get up after his knockdown unlike darchinyan..you did not understand what the article is trying to imply

  3. Ron peralta says:

This writer is biased.Maybe a fan of this “Fallen bull”, blueprint kuno, yes blueprint to lost.

  4. John Axl says:

Jenna j? are you a boxing writer or a stupid biatch out there what blueprint are you talkin about? you should stop writing resign and eat a lot of rice damn *ss

    • Rhoncris says:

Author is absolutely correct brother… Vic almost steal the show…

      • danny says:

I don’t think so. Darchinyan has a weak chin, and it appeared that donaire was closing in on knocking him out. Everytime Darchinyan is hit with a clean shot whether a straight or uppercut, he wobbles. It could be felt that the wobbling bull could not last long anymore.

      • danny says:

Darchinyan doesn’t know how to beat. Donaire. His fighting style was really tailor-made for the Filipino Flash..

      • shawn rey says:

your right bro…some really dont know about boxing and keep commenting like a stupid or dumb..the article just gave the correct analysis of the fight, its a fair article.

      • riki says:

@rhoncris: the author and you are absolutely wrong brother…donaire is still the better boxer!!!

        • Anonymous says:

you simply did not understand what the author means, or you dont understand what you are reading…

  5. RCD says:

This writer’s statement quote “with the right game plan, and a certain amount of discipline, that Nonito Donaire is quite beatable by a number of opponents” as a template to beat Donaire, is a plain and simple stupid boxing analysis. It’s just like saying that Nonito will always fight that way everytime he fights.

If Doinaire only listen to his trainer and up the tempo as early as the 3rd round instead of the 9th round, Donaire could have knockout Darchinyan as early as the 5th round. Considering that Donaire is a thinking fighter and having one of the best boxing trainer out there in Robert Garcia, he won’t make the same mistake again.

    • shawn rey says:

the article is true brother, dont be too defensive…remember rigondeux did that already only he got up and still fight after the knockdown..and almost darchinyan did that too…its true that theres a template to beat nonito, and every boxer and boxing analyst who watched the fight knows it..nonito looks sluggish and slow when fighting the likes of fighters with fast movements..thats the truth and nonito himself knew it. if he did not caught darchinyan with his solid shots he surely lost…he was behind on points prior to the stoppage

  6. Rhoncris says:

Guillermo keep this so called blueprint.. Almost replicated by vic with different style….

  7. Jerry Lynch says:

I had the fight about even before the end but had been telling my wife that Donaire needed to start imposing his will because he looked sluggish and tentative against a guy he is still capable of taking to school.

Having made that point about the fight; it must be said that the writer needs to learn the English language before writing in English. The grammar is abysmal and much of the vocabulary is indecipherable as far as meaning.

  8. ohno says:

hmmm. like that dude owner of ringtalk perdo, this writier wanna be totally gave the blueprint that talk machines are poor writers.
this time its not just poor in writing but also thinking and analysis.

  9. francis says:

Nonito was just giving Vic a moment, look if Nonito was in aggression the only thing Vic has to do is to runaway and cover. He just want Vic to be comfortable so that when comes in Nonito can counter, and that happens after Vic has been countered he goes down with his knees.

  10. Mr. Bean says:

Bitterness is in the air for Darchinyan’s fans 🙂

  11. Zorann says:

Jenna J, what the flying frack are you doing outside the kitchen?!?!? Get back in there and fix me a sandwich. Then clean my pipe when you’re done. Oh, and stop this stupid nonsense about your dream being a boxing writer. It’s satan’s way of distracting you from doing what you know best.

  12. riki says:

a very stupid author of this article…still donaire is the better fighter among the two.. he was hit several time but donaire was not stunned by darchi,,

  13. leon says:

i thought rigon did it already. by neutralising nonito’s left hand and dont be caught by it at all cost and finish the fight are the keys. darchi almost did it too but fell short. nonito should stop falling in love too much of his left hook and wait for the KO opportunity to come. he has to work for it. he has also potent power from his right hand that he needs to utilise more. and that will eventually set up for KO’s opportunity he’s been looking for.

  14. Jenna says:

Jenna J is an amazing writer, remember that people? that is why its a great article she created.

  15. Jowo says:

The writer wasn’t biased. She was just saying it like it was. Nonito won a spectacular fight against a worthy opponent in Darchinyan. It’s just that he did seem to be sluggish and complacent in the 7th and 8th rounds. It was like he gave up similar to the Rigo fight. He seems to have difficulty fighting good counterpunchers which he seriously needs to address in his next fights, most especially if he wants to face Rigo in March next year!

  16. Antonio Jr. Tee says:

    Very intelligent writer! Excellent analysis.

  17. Glen says:

Personally, Donaire won like everybody expected. But he is a different guy now. Rigondeux took a lot from him. He became too cautious, as if afraid to engage. He became flat footed and slow. And became fat…. His body is not belong to that weight class. All he have is FAT. And what makes it worst is his corner. It was in CHAOS!. His father got to learn his place. He just there as mare motivator. He is not the Coach. He transformed from an exciting to a boring class c boxer. And agree or not, the baby looks alike like me… Me and Rachel’s one night stand came to fruition. And Nonito thinks that that baby is his…

  18. jenna you still writing? how about learning how to first.
