Timothy Bradley: “I just think it’s gonna be one shot. If Pacquiao and Marquez fought again, I don’t think it’s gonna go the distance”

It has been over a week since we saw Juan Manuel Marquez turn back the clock and put on a master class display of boxing skill and craft against Mike Alvarado. With the win, Marquez opened the door to a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao, but also opened himself up to questions on how a man nearly 41 years old, is getting stronger and faster with age.

In part 1 of my interview with Timothy Bradley, I get his thoughts on the performance of Juan Manuel Marquez, and why he believes Marquez looked so good in the fight. Tim also talks about what’s next for Marquez and if he thinks we should see a fifth between Pacquiao & Marquez. Additionally Bradley gives his views on a fifth bout, and how he ultimately thinks it plays out. Here is what Timothy Bradley had to say.

Jenna J: Tim, recently Juan Manuel Marquez returned to the ring against Mike Alvarado, and at the age of 40 he looked as good as ever. Why do you think he looked so good?

Timothy Bradley: Well Mike was pretty much tailor made for him. Mike comes forward, a little bit slower than Marquez, a tough guy — Mike is a very tough guy, he can take a lot of shots, he’s got a beard on him, but he was tailor made for Marquez.

Marquez typically has problems with guys that can move in and out on him, that has a little bit more speed then him. If you look at all of his loses, he lost to mostly boxers, so Mike was pretty much tailor made for him.

Jenna: One of the biggest moments of the fight was in the 8th round, in which Marquez landed a counter fight hand that floored Alvarado. Were you surprised that Alvarado was able to recover from that shot?

Bradley: I wasn’t really surprised that he got up from that. Like I said, Alvarado is a tough guy, he can take a punch, he has a strong beard on him. It was a big shot by Marquez — that would of ended anybody’s lights that night.

Mike Alvarado is tough, tough guy, huge heart, and he got up and finished the fight. You got to respect Mike Alvarado, he always comes to fight, he always puts on a great show, and he always puts his heart into it. Tough guy, he’s a warrior.

Jenna: Having seen the performance of Marquez, where do you think he should go from here?

Bradley: I don’t know, its up to him. He’s fought everybody, it’s all up to him and what he wants to do. He said that he’s gonna go back home and rest and think about what’s best for him. I’m sure everybody is talking about a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao.

I don’t know how difficult it’s gonna be because they’ve already announced that Manny Pacquiao will be in Macau fighting his next opponent, and they’re hoping that Marquez agrees to go to Macau and have a fifth fight there.

I know the next question is gonna be, do I think he should fight Marquez? It’s always a good fight, it’s always entertaining — why not? Yeah it’s the fifth time, but a good fight is a good fight. It doesn’t matter how many times you fight, it’s a good fight.

Jenna: In the past you told me, “Why would we want to see a fifth Pacquiao-Marquez fight, haven’t these guys beat up each other enough times?” Is your opinion still the same?

Bradley: I mean, it’s still the same but the fact that Manny Pacquiao beat me and the fact that Marquez looked sensational in his fight, that’s the only real road these two guys can actually go right now. It makes sense, it’s been over a year since they fought. I think this fight is definitely materialized and warmed up and I think it’s time.

The fact that Manny beat me — Manny wants to redeem that knockout loss he suffered about a year ago to Marquez. Manny’s given Marquez a lot of rematches, give Manny his rematch and got at it for a fifth time.

Jenna: Pacquiao wants to redeem himself, that’s something that you felt when you were pursuing the Pacquiao rematch. How much of a burning desire is that for a fighter, when you have that hanging over you?

Bradley: Well, it’s like I couldn’t sleep at night. I can sleep very well now, but it was just something that I felt I had to revisit in my boxing career before I could actually move on and move forward in my career.

It just always eats away at you — I know Manny’s seen the pictures and different things of him on the ground being knocked out. I know he wants to erase that from people’s minds, especially his fan’s minds and knock out Marquez if he can.

Jenna: You are a recent opponent of both Pacquiao and Marquez. How do you think that fight plays out now based on the way both have fought recently?

Bradley: Oh man, Marquez is just tough, Pacquiao is tough too. These guys — two different styles — I don’t know, I honestly really don’t know. I think it’s gonna be an entertaining fight.

Marquez is always smart, and Pacquiao is a lot quicker than Marquez — he can get in and out on him. I’m not even sure how that fight is gonna go. I just think it’s gonna be one shot. If they fought again I don’t think it’s gonna go the distance, I really don’t.

Jenna: Do you think Pacquiao will go out the way he went out last time, going in there looking for a KO, or do you think he will be more cautious?

Bradley: Pacquiao is a little different. Honestly, from the first time I fought him he’s a little different. He does have that killer instinct — he will try to finish you — but at times in the ring it felt like he was being very cautious, especially when he fought me, and I’m not a big, big power puncher. I know Marquez has that dynamite in both hands, I’ve been in the ring with him too.

It will be interesting to see how he holds up and deals with Marquez’ power this time around. Marquez I think has definitely done something to him, but Pacquiao has a lot of ability still left. He threw quick combinations and was able to move on me and land some great shots on me, so he’s still a deadly opponent for anybody.

An honest opinion from a great fighter. But I dought on the way Marquez fight with excellent speed without olympic type of drug testing.

  2. Tom Cruz says:

JMM loves to fight the Pacman, he is not afraid of him and he (Pacman) is the only fighter that can give him (JMM) many dollars. The only question is, is JMM ready to take the VADA test that he refused when he fought Bradley? This is the test that will impose by the Pacman if the fifth fight materialize.

  3. Norberto says:

Having fought both fighters, Timothy expressed the best opinion. How he feels about Marquez and Pacquiao. If the fight will push through, Pacquiao will try to redeem himself, while Marquez will surely make a stamp of his previous victory over Pacquiao as no joke. Like what many have said it will be an entertaining fight, so why not both promoters arrange for this excitement.

  4. noel says:

Lets face the fact, JMM won the 4th fight against Pacman. But another fact was he’s loosing the fight up until that perfect punch in the 6th round. He got pacman down on the 3rd, but he was down himself in the 4th. If the knockout did not came, JMM was in the brink of being knock-out, the ref might stop it, or Nacho will halt it if the fight continues. Just compared their faces after the fight, we might say that JMM suffered more beatings than the Pacman.
As a gentleman, JMM must give Pacman a rematch because the latter gave him 3 rematches. The 5th fight, whether win or loose must close the chapter of their rivalry. or JMM will no longer take the rematch and retire.

    • Wei says:

Absolutely right Bro! Same observation! The price of beating pacman took a lot in Marquez!

  5. Gerald says:

JMM is not getting any younger, but from JMM recent fights, try to review and notice that he’s getting faster and stronger. Human cannot deprive for his longevity, but endurance and strength cannot be reset without the wonders of science especially when you are in the field of Sports. I guess.

  6. UrSuperHero says:

how can u not like timmothy bradley . Good role model for alot of ppl

  7. Hfortu says:

I doubt Marquez will fight Pacquiao again if there is VADA testing involve.

    • baratingas says:

I was just about to say something but you did it already…perfect and sharp observation. Before and especially after JMM beats Alvarado there are some indications that he will not fight Pacquiao. Nacho said he will never allow Marquez for the 5th time, why? million dollars more? because they’re sensing that the VADA testing will be imposed.

  8. floydcot says:

he will fight manny if the price is right. But if marquez is on PED’S and manny impose the test,I don’t think the fight will happen.

  9. Sonny of Sydney says:

It is fear if Peeman refuses 5th – he really got bashed by Pac hefore that lucky punch.. Nacho KNEW, hence he would not like him to SUFFER again – Pweh! Pac never gave away a rematch! he he he.

According to Anabolic Steroid Bible –

      ACNE:

Rampant acne is one of the more obvious indicators of steroid use. When taking anabolic steroids, an adult will commonly be confronted with this same problem. This is because the sebaceous glands, which secrete oils in the skin, are stimulated by androgens. Increasing the level of such hormones in the skin may therefore enhance the output of oils, often causing acne to develop on the back, shoulders and face. The use of strongly androgenic steroids in particular can be very severe, in some instances causing blemishes on the skin or spots. By washing your face and always showering after exercises it will reduce this effect. If you have very severe acne see your dermatologist, but in most instances even a dermatologists can’t do anything until your cycle is over.

      AGGRESSION:

Aggressive behavior can be one of the scarier sides of steroid use. Men are typically more aggressive than women because of the testosterone difference, and especially with the use of steroids (especially androgens) can increase a person’s aggressive tendencies. Yet some bodybuilders and power-lifters like this effect for the use of lifting heavier and more explosive. A steroid user who cannot manage to control themselves should seriously rethink there process of cycling, because thinking doing more is better might be right or wrong know your body first.

  10. Juan has nowhere else to go, he wants to become the first Mexican to win world titles at 5 different weight classes.

Marquez doesn’t care who it is, he wants a shot at a title and with Arum having the WBO in his pocket and Manny also, its the only fight for both men, fight wise and money wise.

If Manny can win and win well then he is in line for a shot at Floyd, any sort of less than average performance and Manny wont get the shot, but then on the flip side, if Manny fights his best fight ever he still may not get the Floyd fight for obvious reasons.

If Marquez wins, what does it set up for him fights wise? Not a great deal really.
A big ask but if Marquez can go to 154, there is a fight with fellow Mexican Canelo, a big ask like I say, but other than that he has nothing else to prove to anyone.

  11. iriga city boy says:

Marquez was about to be taken cared of on the 5th and the 6th ,if not for that timed “punch’ on the last second(6th).That was a ‘gargling blood ” experience for him. What a figfht!!.What a blood wasting and pouring. He’s now 40 years old and moving to 41 .He and Nacho might be cautious now of the rigors and punishment in fighting Pacquiao again. Both “peleadores” had their shares of brutal punishments. He might be hesitant now .He said there is no need to prove against the Filipino.More so, that Pacquiao might insist stringent “testings”.
He’s now sounding off about family, flag and Mexican people.
Want to quit,Juan? The blue skies of the Mexican horizon is all yours to gaze.
Enjoy your “yellow HUMMER” driving through Zocalo.

  12. Kojie says:

Well said Tim Bradley. Glad to know you’ve moved on and is on to bigger and greater fights. Looking forward to that. As for Pacman and Marquez, I’d still go with Pacman on this one. You can clearly see how much punishment Marquez was getting and how his trainor wanted to stop the match before that lucky instance (not lucky punch mind you) where everything fell into perfect timing for him, but we know he was getting beat up so bad he looked like hell.

  13. vincent says:

Marquez is not afrai to fight Pacquaio as long as he could use steroids. If he can’t there’s no way he’ll fight Pac. If they fight, marquez must be examined thoughrolly to make sure he doesn’t use steroids. This dude is a cheat and would do anything to defeat pacquiao. Look at what he’d done to alavarado. Look at those acne all over his body!

Dude, I take Dianabol (Steroid) I havent got one spot on my body..NONE. It effects everyone differently. I do think Juan is on PEDS because his chest has not gone like that before in previous bouts.

This says to me that the use of PEDS has been upped more than his previous dosage, thus why the acne.

  15. vincent says:

Whatever marquez do, he will not emerge as a true fighter. He will have to erase those acne first before he becomes one.

  16. Tedceldor says:

Marquez will not take this talked about 5th fight with Pacquiao. Bradley is right, it will be one shot but Marquez will not give Pacquiao the chance to unleash the EQUALIZER.

  17. PACMANUSA says:

With PEDs he got the lucky shot on Pacquiao . Without PEDs he looked slow and old against Bradley . With PEDs against Alvarado he looked quick and young again . He is without a doubt the Worlds Best Cheater !

  18. Let em both use roids. Shit.

Manny aint knocking shit out with no roids.

    Simple.

  19. BERNIE says:

Marquez is on PED. This is evident with him being stronger and faster at 41, Angel Heredia a well known and documented Chemist who have been involved in numerous PED cases is now working with Marquez. Pimples on Marquez body is a strong sign of symptoms of PED use. Marquez refused to fight anybody if VADA will supervise the PED testing. In fact the fight with Alvarado did not have any kind of testing.

  20. rotsen says:

Marquez should fight Manny to settle things once and for all. He was lucky to have that lucky punch but he is already beaten up and next round maybe his trainer or the referee will stop the fight. Also, he should agree VADA testing to remove all speculations against him if he is realyy true clean fighter.

  21. amy says:

Mexico is best in the world with drugs.what do you think where marquez is from?the VADA is the only controlling measure if we want the sports and the fight really clean to know who’se who? it’.s just fair

  22. robokin says:

Coach Nacho B.is an old hand in boxing,he has literary seen it all,if you read his statements and you are a fight fan of the Pacman, you will see the truth in what he said:The fifth fight will be very dangerous on Marquez,Manny will be on a mission for revenge, manny would go all out and when he goes all out he really do e.g.Bible study,Chess,Dart, basketball…there is no half hearted way for the pacman when he really wants to.After 4 fights,Coach nacho knows this and he is afraid.

  23. Seeing is believing says:

    Wow ma…Pactards have it BAD!

  24. Mon Pelaez says:

Actually im a fan of bradley too his my number 2 best fighter. Pac is of course the best ever not floyd TBEE The Best Evader Ever. Hmmm maybe thats the reason why marquez always wears a jacket on practice n training to sweat out and cover whatever are coming out ftom his body.. I still believe marq owes pac a rematch… For sure its going to be an explosive again.
