Austin Trout: “I’m really world title minded and rematch minded. After that, there’s no reason to stay at 154lbs”

Austin “No Doubt” Trout is the former WBA light middleweight champion and a fighter who holds a win over the current middleweight champion, Miguel Cotto. Now having won three fights in a row, Trout is looking to win back a title in 2015. In my “On The Ropes” boxing radio interview with Trout, I discuss with him his recent with over Luis Galarza and what direction he is looking to go in next. Trout also talks about Canelo Alvarez’s thrilling win over James Kirkland and the possibility of getting another shot at Alvarez. Additionally, Austin gives his thoughts on Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, and talks about how far he sees himself from a world title. Here is what Austin Trout had to say.

Jenna J: You’re coming off of a win, you defeated Luis Galarza by seventh round TKO, how do you feel about your performance?

Austin Trout: It was good, we got the right outcome. I can’t really complain about anything, we got the win in good fashion. I’m very happy with the win and I’m happy with the performance. Ultimately we made the best of what happened.

Jenna J: The opponent you took on wasn’t the opponent you were supposed to take on, you were supposed to take on Anthony Mundine. How was it like making that last minute adjustment?

Austin Trout: Like I’ve said before, the realms of the unknown are dangerous. Not knowing what this guy got and what he’s been doing, it kind of leaves a little worry in the back of my mind, but we just implemented our will on him. That’s what we ended up doing. It took seven rounds to get him out of there, but a couple of those rounds were figuring out what he doesn’t like.

Jenna J: You’re on a three fight winning streak. How do you feel being on the right side of things?

Austin Trout: I feel back to myself and ready to make a run for the title. My original opponent for this Saturday was Anthony Mundine and I believe that fight is still on the table, so we’re definitely gonna try to scratch that tree and get that number one ranking.

Jenna J: Do you think if the fight with Mundine gets rescheduled, that you might have to go to Australia to fight him?

Austin Trout: No, he’s still gotta come over here because it was for the Premier Boxing Champions series and they haven’t made any schedules to go out of the country that I know of. If he wants to come and be seen, he’s gotta do it in America.

I’m not saying I have any problems going to Australia, it’s actually on my bucket list to visit that country, so I’d be more than happy to go that way if it was possible. For viewing wise, it would be in our best interest to stay and do it on the PBC network.

Jenna J: What do you think about the Premier Boxing Champions series? How do you feel about that outlet?

Austin Trout: I’m very excited and I’m very honored and flattered to be a part of that. Even thought they just showed highlights of my fight, it was twenty seconds on a huge network, so I’ll definitely that that. I’m just looking forward to being in more fights, if they want to film the whole ones, then put the whole fight up. The exposure was great.

Jenna J: Besides the number one ranking, what are you looking for in the 154lb division? What are your goals?

Austin Trout: I want to be champ again, I want to get a belt and possibly unify it and also get rid of some of those losses that I have on my record. I’m really world title minded and rematch minded. After that, there’s no reason to stay at 154lbs.

Jenna J: One of your former opponents, Saul Alvarez, is coming off of a very exciting knockout win over James Kirkland. Did you get a chance to see that fight?

Austin Trout: Oh yeah I definitely did, I saw the fight. He looked strong but Kirkland was the perfect opponent for him.

Jenna J: Were you surprised of how that fight played out?

Austin Trout: I thought Kirkland had a lot left in him. He looked a little sluggish from the get go, but then again, catching that uppercut can make anybody look sluggish. I pray for James’ safety and hope he reassesses his career and his future.

Jenna J: Do you think it was good for the sport to have a fight like that? One week earlier there was the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight that disappointed a lot of people. Do you think the Canelo fight was refreshing for fans?

Austin Trout: I don’t know. That’s a good question because I enjoyed the Mayweather fight, even though it wasn’t what people thought. For me it was more on Pacquiao, I thought Pacquiao was gonna be able to bring it more. He was semi-successful, he just didn’t do it enough.

Floyd showed a masterful performance and something I love to watch, people with skills showcase their skills. The Canelo fight was exciting but we kind of knew what was going to happen. Canelo just went out and did more. I think you need both, I think you need the drama, the blood and guts, and you also need the sweet science. That’s the whole spectrum of the boxing game.

Jenna J: A lot of people don’t seem to be giving Floyd the credit that he deserves for beating Pacquiao because the fight wasn’t exciting. Do you think Floyd’s win is getting underrated?
Austin Trout: Absolutely. He made the guy who people thought was the number two pound-for-pound great look like an amateur. I thought Maidana gave a better fight. It shows you how great Floyd was, and again, my disappointment is in Pacquiao because not only did he not lay it on the line, it looked like he was either tired or gave up around the middle rounds and that’s not normal of Pacquiao.

Jenna J: Turning things back to yourself Austin. You talked earlier about avenging your losses. Between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, who would you want to fight if you could only pick one?

Austin Trout: I would say Canelo, definitely. I felt that there were a lot of things that were stacked against before I stepped into the ring, and I felt like I still did enough to win the fight. But at the same time, there were things I could have done to make that an even wider margin. It was not my best performance by far and I would love another chance to right that wrong, but I do want a rematch with Lara as well.

Jenna J: How far do you see yourself from a title shot?

Austin Trout: I hope I’m two fights away. If we can get this fight with Mundine, that puts us number 1 and I prey the next fight after that would be for a title shot. One or two more fights, we almost there.

Mayweather always fight like an amateur.

  2. dms says:

manny won the fight..mayweather misses a lot..pacman strategy is countering the counter…manny hits mayweather with solid punches..mayweather tried to pretend that pacman is missing, but pacman made floyd miss a lot also..

  3. darwin barro says:

    austin trout who?

  4. barry gil r. pilar says:

Oh yeah and Lara who was a nobody made Trout a punching Bag. Floyd was fast! indeed very fast in running like a chicken, clinching like a leech and headlocking like a paddlock.! Mayweather? Nah its a waste of time! Floyd Sr. kept yelling at his son in the duration of the fight to stop fighting like a fuckin’ scared!

  5. floydcott says:

another manny’s hater, dont u watch the replay? manny made floyd like scared amateur. watch it first austin before you judge.

  6. Leone Arnols says:

mayweather fights like an amateur no Manny. mayweather potshots to earn points. That’s what amateur fighters do.

  7. Floydiot says:

You observe and talk like an AMATEUR yourself dude! Did you watch the fight? or you just watched with eyes closed and listening only to the biased commentators?

  8. glen says:

Floyd didn’t took Maidana seriously at the first time. He moved out of his comfort zone by attempting to bang with Maidana for a little bit. Floyd knew he can not do that to Pacquiao that’s why he run and hug 2 times more than any fight that he ever had. He was scared to take chances. That is the truth.

  9. anonymous says:

Austin Trout looked like he has an “amateurish” thinking for saying Floyd made Pacquiao look like an amateur. Hahahahaha! Is he greater than the great champions who thought Pacquiao gave a good fight like Shane Mosley, Bradley, Andre Ward, and Roger Mayweather, to name a few. Holyfield seated at ringside thought Manny won and landed more punches. Meanwhile, Roger Mayweather even wants Floyd to rematch Pacquiao because he and his brother Floyd Sr. didn’t like Floyd’s performance over Pacquiao. Floyd Sr. even said àfter the fight that he will have to undergo “soul-searching” due to Floyd’s showing in the fight. He thought it was close and he was so apprehensive in the corner. FYI, Austin, Manny dodged more punches than Mayweather did! Maybe a Floyd fan-boy like you wants Manny to run scared around the ring just like what Floyd did so you can say that Manny did great. Your statement does not even have weight as you’re a nobody.

  10. John says:

Funny how pacquaio fans say that Floyd ran, when in fact Chris Algeri moved all over the boxing ring didn’t hear any excuses on that fight. Mayweather was right in front of pacquaio and at times leaned against the ropes, pacquaio did nothing. Why did pacquaio fail to put punches together? Answer: Floyd Mayweather’s right hand counter punch. Days before the fight paquiao and roach said he would knock Mayweaterh out.. After the fight you come up with some lame excuse about a shoulder injury.

    • anonymous says:

Because Floyd punched Pacquiao’s shoulder injury (Team Mayweather knew of the injury, you should know this if you followed both training camps and if you saw Floyd’s Sr. &Ellerbe’s interview, they knew), not just he kept pulling Manny’s right hand. Go over the fight for you to see.

    • Potoytoy says:

The face of mayweather on that fight looks very scared…. we all know that., you should see it !

    • JOJO says:

Simple! Mayweather is a better runner than Chris Algeri.

    • anonymous says:

Pacquiao never said so. Meanwhile, Roach kept flip-flopping but he also said that. And you know, Roach always predict those things in every Pacquiao fight. It was a mere strategy but he was actually worried about the fight. It showed in the final day of training camp and when the injury happened. Videos on his interviews would support what i said.

  11. anonymous says:

Maidana is a 165lbr, Floyd is 160lbs+, Manny is 152lbs. So you think Austin, that Manny can bully Floyd the way Maidana did to Floyd? You’re nuts, Austin, for expecting too much from Pacquiao. He was way smaller than Floyd who was on steroids on fight night, and he got a pass for being so because he’s friends with Tygart and USADA has a history of covering up Floyd’s positive drug test in the past which has been disclosed to the public in the past. Americans are cheaters!!! All of them conspired so that Floyd wins even by dirty means! Fyi, the Floyd that Manny fought is way stronger than the Floyd that Maidana (2nd fight) fought. Marquez has said in the past that Manny is stronger than Floyd. But now, it’s the opposite. It doesn’t take.rocket science to explain why.

  12. Anonymous says:

If the Mayweather that stood his ground against Maidana in the first fight, is the Mayweather that fought Pacquiao, Pac will knock him out with one arm.

The moving Mayweather is the Mayweather that fought Maidana the second fight and fought Pacquiao.

  13. jose medina says:

of course pacquiao loked tired, he wasnt allowed to his ”sealed water” his ”vitamin suplements” and he also was denied a ”pain” shot.
the little bastar tried and tried to cheat but he wasnt allowed to, therefore his poor performance.
    Floyd was right after all

    • anonymous says:

Manny is not a cheater. It is so easy for you to accuse someone of crime without basis. It speaks well of your character. And you must be ashamed of yourself. Fyi, Manny is not a liar especially at the present time. His religion condemn lies. Well, Arum is a liar. Pacquiao’s injury started not in 2008 but in 2009. It was Pacquiao’s fault, his committed adultery in that year came back as a price he had to pay in the most important fight of his career. That injury, over the years stayed there but the pain was manageable enough to let him still fight at elite level. It did not heal totally over the years considering how active Pacquiao was and being in fights 2x a year. Snake Ariza knew it and disclosed that weakness to Floyd himself when he hired him. So when the fight was done, they knew the plot to stage: PURPOSEFULLY INJURE that already minor injury that wouldn’t heal to make the fight easier for Floyd. And so the “planted moles” in the person of the hired sparring partners were successful on the 4th of April. The shoulder was so bad that sparring partners were sent home and had to cancel the sparring sessions for at least a week. People were inclined to dismiss the injury but that is a true story. Pacquiao fought with the injury without pain-killers (NSAC didn’t allow him for clerical errors) because it was the whole team’s decision. People say “hey.Pacquiao didn’t look like injured for how he was able to fight and he didn’t look like he was injured”. Why? It is the same reason why they had to conceal the injury during training camp: NOT to give the opponent a tactical advantage. Pacquiao had to fight through with a guarantee that he’ll be given medication and painkillers. Truth is, he was advised by doctors to rest 30-50 days to heal but it was already impossible being that the fight is around the corner. Another point is, boxers feign being hurt because they do not want their opponents to get the confidence and may finish them if they looked “hurt”. And why Pacquiao was able to raise both hands during weigh-in? 2 simple reasons: adrenaline rush and pain-reliever still in effect on his body. So Pacquiao’s injury should not be blamed at him but at Mayweather camp who plotted to get Pacquiao “hurt” in the training càmp. TRUE STORY. PERIOD.

  14. julius says:

Where was Maynny’s bruised face? And why did Mayweather have to cover up with a hat afterwards to conceal those bruises on his cheeckbones? It’s obvios, Austin Trout is gave an exaggerated comment. If Mayweather really made Pacquiao look like an amateur then Mayweather would have dominated the fight by beating Pacquiao convincingly by actually out-boxing him. Not by playing it safe and doing just enough to get by in some rounds. That’s not real boxing. If your bigger and and taller and claim to be a great boxer then use those tools to box, not evade and juke a fighter and call it brilliant deffense! On the contrary, Pacquiao had way more counter punches while being the agressor and had more power punches and also had the better deffense by making Mayweather miss with big swings. The videos don’t lie unlike those crazy stats. Ultimately, weather Pacquiao won or you believe Mayweather won it was a closer fight than the scorecards and that ridiculous compubox and that is why I beleive that Mayweather Promotions is a mafia for controling EVERY aspect of that fight from the bias commentary and scorecards. 118-110 was a joke! The spying by Mayweather outside the ring was disgusting and even more was the excessive 14+ blood testing. Despite all that drama Mayweather created, Pacquiao still put u a good performance! Manny Pacquiao will always be the people’s champ and the real winner of that corrupt May 2nd fight.

p.s Paulie Malanagie as a commentator for the fight was a joke! And so is Austin Trout with his uneducated analysis of the fight.

  15. LeBaldking Flopper says:

    I don’t want to see a rematch.
Freddy CockRoach watched too many porno flicks instead of seriously studying Floyd’s fight films, his tactics, & tendencies. Fraud Jr. would just easily outsmart Roach & Manny again.
As Trout said = JailWeather Jr. made Pacquiao look like an amateur

  16. John says:

@anonymous get your facts correct mayweather has never weighted 160lbs according his largest weigh on fight night is 151lb were you got 160lbs is beyond me

    • anonymous says:

Haha! That’s what you know. He has been fighting at Welterweight even before he fought Hatton. Didn’t you ever realize why Floyd would opt not being weighed on fight night? They have always wanted to sell that Floyd is a small guy like he’s 150lbs or 151 as they tell you. No it can’t be. The fact is he is just a little bit smaller than Miguel Cotto who is now fighting at Middleweight because he’s pretty lazy getting his weight down (tho he is taller than Cotto). But he is really not small. He keeps his weight down for keeping himself in gym even between fights. Geesh, Pacquiao is about 5’5 or 5’6 in real life, and he weighs around 150lbs when he’s not training for a fight.John, welterweights normally walks around at least 20lbs on top of their weigh-in weight. Do you know Danny Garcia who fights at junior welterweight? He walks around at at least 175 lbs in 2010, ask Naazim Richardson. That’s why they are so strong at the weight division they campaign at. It’s because they are truly big! Fighters keep their weight down with regular training or by using illegal drugs, and it’s called PEDs.
You now see how great Pacquiao is that he is fighting at welterweight when he is just a big lightweight. If he is a full-time boxer, maybe he can fight at lightweight.

  17. Rommel says:

hahahaha… trout comment is comical he’d say that because they’ve both black ass bias to the fullest LOL actually Floyd losses the fight period he just won because he controlled everything from promotion to ref plus the crook judges was in floyd payroll

  18. that’s a stupid comment austin! watch again the fight especially rounds 3,4,6,7,8,9,10 and 12 and see how pacquiao won!

  19. John says:

  20. jun says:

IMO… Floyd is the one who fought like an amateur. (great amateur) He run, hug, jab and just intended is to score. He fight like scared that time. But I admit Pac was also lazy at that fight.. . Result: BORING close fight..

  21. jimmy pop says:

Even floyd would not call manny a amateur in that fight.. Floyd clearly stated he saw why manny got to this level some of the moves he made..Why does Roger Mayweather think floyd needs to rematch to clear doubt and give a solid performance? austin trout is a C grade fighter anyway he got exposed time after time and doesnt get better hes weak mentaly..

  22. JOJO says:

MR. Trout . like a new style of boxing introduce by Floid ” RUNNING & HUGGING STYLE” for him the aggressive boxer who really want to fight by catching a running boxer is AN AMATEUR ONE, and the RUNNING & HUGGING BOXER is a PROFESSIONAL ONE. the gauge of winning in boxing now a days is running & hugging introduce by Floid. because the three (3)blind American judges were amazed in Floid running & hugging. they forgot that the competition is boxing and not Marathon. what a shame! boxing slowly gone if this kind of style (running & hugging) introduce by Floid is a new device or gauge of winning. THAT IS THE REALITY!!

  23. Kidd Kulafu says:

BRADLEY DID A BETTER JOB AGAINST MANNY ON THEIR REMATCH, THAN FLOYD EVER DID ON MAY 2.

  24. Mossimo says:

Hey Austin Trout did you really watched the fight? I think Mayweather fought as an amateur. He just run, hug, pot shot, run. He didn’t fight the way he fought Maidana that’s why you were telling Maidana fought a better fight.☺

  25. LILO says:

Actually it was mayweather who fought like an amateur.

  26. Nathan says:

Did he watch the fight? Manny is making floyd miss and pay in that fight more than Maidana did. Manny is so technical in that fight and even out smarting mayweather at times.
