Shane Mosley: “If Manny Pacquiao is going to win against Mayweather, it’s going to have to be in the first 3-4 rounds”

I recently had a chance to speak to former three division world champion, Sugar Shane Mosley, to get his thoughts on the big upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Mosley is one of a hand full of fighters to have faced both Mayweather and Pacquiao near their primes, and during this interview he offers unique insight into their fighting styles. Shane also gives his official prediction for May 2nd, and why he thinks that fighter has the edge. Additionally, Mosley talks about his defining fight with Antonio Margarito and shares a message to all his fans. Here is what Shane Mosley had to say.

Robert Brown: You fought both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao roughly at the same time. Out of Mayweather and Pacquiao, who was the most difficult to penetrate and what strategy must each fighter employ to win?

Shane Mosley: Yeah that’s true, I fought them both around the same time. I was in the middle of a divorce during both fights, and had injuries for both fights as well. So with ‘Pacman’ I didn’t have a good gauge on what I could do with him since I fought him 4 months after having surgery on my Achilles tendon.

I knocked him down, and he knocked me down. By the end of the fight I had blood blisters on my right foot from compensating on it cause of my Achilles. I should have waited on the fight, but the payday was too big. There was no way I could have won that fight in the condition I was in. So my perception of Pacquiao is different than it would be had I fought him in fighting shape.

I was hurt with Mayweather too, but not as bad. I had a groin pull, so my legs were not all the way under me. I almost knocked him out straight out the gate. That would be a good tip for Pacquiao, he can’t give Mayweather a chance to get comfortable or to pick up on his rhythm. If he is going to win against Mayweather, it’s going to have to be in the first 3-4 rounds tops. So since I was hurt for both, it’s hard to give a good analysis of what was difficult or not, since everything was extra difficult for me at that time.

Robert Brown: Mayweather or Pacquiao, who are you picking to win?

Shane Mosley: For the simple fact that I was seriously hurt with ‘Pacman’ and was able to avoid him knocking me out and Mayweather is not hurt and is generally the best at avoiding punches, I would have to go with Mayweather. Plus Mayweather has Ariza and Pacquiao doesn’t, so I am definitely going with Mayweather on this one, although I like Manny personally and wish him the best.

Robert Brown: Your incredible win going up to face Antonio Margarito and the drama beforehand regarding the loaded gloves of Margarito, can you talk us through your emotions of winning that title and the drama surrounding it?

Shane Mosley: It was a good moment. It felt good to KO him, but not because of the hand wrapping scandal. Trust me, as a fighter, the people we trust often have us doing questionable stuff we honestly didn’t know about.

I had to sue Victor Conte for giving me a cream he swore was legal, but turned out to be PED’s. It tarnished my name unfairly because I had only met the guy once through a trainer of mine I trusted. They lied to me so easily. So I can see how Margarito maybe didn’t know. I don’t hold that against him.

There are people I have fought this decade who I know were doing worse stuff than that. For the record, I was only using the cream for one month before I fought Oscar. It wasn’t even steroids, it was EPO. I wasn’t using it often or long enough for it to have done anything, but ever since that, people want to take credit away from me. That is the bad thing; a lot of people are just misinformed.

Robert Brown: Did the punishment fit Margarito’s crime?

Shane Mosley: I don’t know. I think the ass whopping he got and the loss was punishment enough. Like I said before, I know from personal experience, he may not have even known that was plaster. Or maybe he did (We will never know), but either way, I still won. That little shit can’t stop me, I’m Sugar Shane baby.

Robert Brown: Out of all the divisions you won titles in, which do you feel was your best division to fight at?

Shane Mosley: I am a 147lb’er all the way. I am not built to fight 154. I never should have fought that heavy. I walk around 152 today, I’m slower and don’t feel good that heavy. At 147 I can kill anybody if I’m not hurt.

Robert Brown: Anything you would like to say to Sugar Shane fans?

Shane Mosley: You know, I have to say, I have some of the best fans. They are the most informed of all the fans. They actually read and look into stuff. I have a lot of haters who like to speak on stuff they don’t know, and I have noticed my fans always are the smart ones, they know what’s up.

I have a reputation for being humble; always taking time out for a picture or whatever with the fans, and that is why. My fans are just cooler that some other fighters fans. I don’t get blind loyalty from any “race” like many fighters. I have a great mix of fans. Mexican, Latin, Asian, black, white…race doesn’t matter. The one thing they have in common is they all are smart and like my class. That says more about them than me. Thanks for the support. Love you guys.

For a grownass man, you sure make a lot of excuses. You sound very insecure when you try so hard to compensate for your shortcomings. At the same time, you take credit for things you shouldn’t get credit for, like “knocking down” Pacquiao when you obviously pushed him. He was even cramping in the fight and still dominated you.

    • Bk bk says:

Lemme guess… You’re a PACTURD!!! As soon as someone says something contrary to your man, you’ve got to insult him…smh

  2. Kdd says:

I remember last episode of 360 mosely was crying and begging at his coach to stop the fight..lol he was so scared of pacman.

  3. Arnulfo Cruz says:

    What does this mean?

“Plus Mayweather has Ariza and Pacquiao doesn’t, so I am definitely going with Mayweather…”

Does this mean Ariza is so special or Ariza is administering PED to Mayweather and Pacquiao then?

Ariza was in Brandon Rios’ corner and Maidana’s and didn’t do anything significant in their fights, so what it is with that stupid Ariza are you talking about?

Never mind. You will be among many so called ‘experts’ who will be proven dead wrong when Pacquiao upset the arrogant Mayweather jr.

  4. FLOYDIE says:

Shane was a shame! Did he knockdown the Pacman? That is a lie Shane! You never KD d Pacman.

  5. Shawn says:

“Mosley floored Pacquiao in the tenth round with a push, but referee Kenny Bayless ruled it a knockdown. …. Bayless apologized for this mistake to Roach, Pacquiao’s coach, after the fight.” – wikipedia

  6. Ed Nacario says:

Spot on Jeff. I agree with you. I can’t believe Mosley is still peddling his “reasons” for losing to Gayweather and Pacquiao. And taking credit for that “pushdown” of Pacquiao. Liar and cheater!

  7. Rogie says:

    Pacquiao all the way..

  8. Rogie says:

For me beating Mayweather is easy. Pacquiao needs to connect 1 2 combination and get out of the range and make mayweather miss..then 1 2 3 combinations and circle around. Make him frustrate and make mistake..

    • Anonymous says:

MayWeather is the master of adjusting and that’s what he wants Pacman to do is throw punches cause he’s a counter puncher

    • Mike says:

Yeah ok he can do that with his short ass arms you couch fighters kill me

    • Mike says:

Roger you are an idiot if it’s so easy to beat Mayweather why aren’t you in the ring making the millions to do it? Out of all the professionals he has fought he is still undefeated but you Roger a couch fighter that probably gets his ass kicked or lunch money took when you were in school. If you don’t like what I said get at me I ain’t hard to find and let’s see if you can beat me first a dude in the street. You pussy

    • Andre jakes says:

Do u fight? I’m telling you say what u THINK pac needs to do cause them 1 2 combo are not aginst the best defense in boxing. It’s different when your in the ring. Easy MONEY

    • Anonymous says:

For me I stopped reading your comment when you said ” for me beating Mayweather is easy”.

  9. Arnulfo Cruz says:

Just can’t wait for this fight to happen and prove a lot of so called ‘experts’ wrong

  10. Haha says:

Lol. You knocked Pacquiao down, huh? You could kill any 147 lb-er when/if you were healthy? Your fans like you because of your “class”?

Sounds like a guy with self-esteem problems. Trying to pump himself up to feel better. It’s okay Sugar Shane, we’ll pity you too if that’s what you want.

It sucks to go to Australia and get your assed kicked by C level fighters doesn’t it?

  11. mateng says:

pacquiao didn’t knock you out cos you were running for your life, youre so scared youre begging to stop the fight, that’s the reason why you survived, you ran and kept on touching gloves with pacquiao as if begging him not to hurt you,,and how did you knock him down? you were afraid as hell to throw a punch, And just like marquez even if youre given a chance and a ton of cash, you know youll never get in the ring with pacquiao ever again.

    • Robert R says:

Just like Marquez? If I remember correctly they faught 4x’s all close fights besides one defining Knock Out that PAC took 5-minute count for. Don’t you ever say that Marquez is afraid of PacMan. With that said. I have Manny over Floyd with a UD

  12. dhckr says:

    Liar! What knock down?

Mosley stepped on Pacquiao’s right foot, then pushed him down.

    1. it could be rough sailing for pacquiao since his team to this very day hasn’t made an issue out of the referees’ cheating for floyd by allowing him to HUG & GRAB his opponents everytime he gets in trouble. none of team pacquiao to this very day has brought up the topic of floyd’s EXCESSIVE HUGGING or its other permutations grab, hold, snag, clinch and grapple. you have to realize by now it’s how floyd plans to win. RUN UP POINTS, en den HUG PACQUIAO when he’s about to do him damage rendering him NEUTRALIZED.

REFEREE MUST BE COMPELLED TO ENFORCE QUEENSBERRY RULE #2 – NO WRESTLING OR HUGGING ALLOWED!!

they need to PRE-EMPT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM MP WILL FACE IN THE FIGHT and keep repeating this point to the press till their ears split and explodes.

    2. floyd could go for a KO especially if its true as many suspect that floyd hired chemical memo to give him that ooomph, otherwise he still runs up points for a UD. FLOYD WILL THROW PERFECTLY TIMED, FULL POWER RIGHT HAND LEADS ALL NIGHT then jump back, but if he sees paq in trouble will bravely follow-up. it’s a page out of marquez’ KO win v paq. the power may have been PEDed but the technique was studied and practiced well and long. it was a technique that was as beautiful as it was simple, beat him to the punch.

    3. which is why floyd’s not gonna be using his JAB TO THE BODY lest he goes down the same way hatton did the 1st time with a “right hook, go under” which is also a beat opponent to the punch.

    4. floyd’s got a great right uppercut and can extend himself backwards against the rope to avoid a head shot kya pde obrkiliwa dto.

    5. all talk dismissing floyd’s power were just that to get him to sign the fight contract. now all bets are off that paq is going to walk through floyd’s punches as floyd is expected to try and establish respect early (TO MAKE PAQ TENTATIVE) much like jmm does that he may maintain distance and engage only as he sees fit.

    6. dpat ke pk pra ciang kngkarot pra mkdkt lagi sa blndsde ni puge. piste. lol. dun cia dpt prti sa likod(bulagsidenipuge) lundaginniayungbulag nipogi.

    • Ari Kutoy says:

Agree with your random thoughts. I was also thinking of the same things, especially the hugging and grabbing the opponent. I hope the referee will allow Pacquiao to fight inside and warn Mayweather if he tries to grab and hold. Ali tried that tactic against Frazier but referee Carlos Padilla did not allow him and warned him repeatedly.

  14. jess says:

“Mooseley” should not compare his ability with Pacquiao. Pacquio is a lot skillful than him. Moosely continue to relive his lost fight with Floydie Jr when he lucky-punched Floydie Jr in the second round. But in the case of Pacquiao, he can hit Floydie Jr in any round and when Floydie Jr feels these punches he will not answer the next bell. He will be too proud to be KO’d to take chances in getting on with Pacquiao in the next round. Hey guys, mark my prediction. Floydie Jr will not answer the next bell!!!!

  15. wbox says:

btw – i hope Floyd comes clean in this fight

Boxing is alive and well even without Mayweather or Pacquiao. This was a nice article on it http://www.theboxingguru.com/2015/04/boxing-dead-after-mayweather.html#more

  17. Kevin says:

Lmao! When Floyd wins, what are you Pacman fans going to do? How will you live? What will you say? Where will you go? How well you feel? I’m worried about you all! Seriously! You can’t take that Floyd is blessEd and Manny is the wolf in sheeps clothing. I want you all to have my email address and I will be there for you when Floyd takes Pacman to school. I am man enough to offer you reconciliation and mending words as fellow boxing fans. I will not judge because you know not what you think you understand! The real boxer will emerge and the fake will fall. [email protected].

The same question will apply to Mayweather fans…the best part of this showdown is how fans from both sides react to their fighter losing. We all know Mayweather fans will cry and say PED’s were involved….Pacqiuao fans will do the same because of Ariza. Or Pacquiao fans will say Floyd was gifted a win….the real story of this fight will be the aftermath. Me, personally, I am going for Pacquiao because Floyd’s ego needs a reality check…I like Floyd, don’t get me wrong…but cherry picking his opponents raises a lot of questions. No champion in history sidesteps their number 1 contender as much as today. Most champs would love to show younger up and comers who still is relevant in their division. Porter, Thurman, etc..would’ve been targets to a real champ to show what’s up..either way, I hope both May/Pac come out and make this one hell of a show..and prove everyone wrong…a draw would be hysterical.

    • bob says:

Really?it will be another DLH and Margarito combined beatdown.mark my word.but i would be very humble in my prediction and be very happy to console you on your grief.

  18. Smiley Cruz says:

Are you serious ?? Floyd using peds get real there’s nothing worst than casual boxing fans who watch two YouTube videos and think they know boxing. Floyd cherry picked Canelo too huh? He had a huge shot until he lost then he was too young same with chino 1st and 2nd fight. Didn’t manny just fight a bum ufc fighter in chris Algeri lol ?

    • vin says:

did shane mosley believed he knocked down manny? in roumd 11? cmon you go watch round 11 after manny slipped beacuse of your push, when manny got up whos the one running for his life? you look liked want to get out of the ring after many stand up by your push. pathetic mosly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPgUsa2dh9Q

  19. storm says:

I think they are both great boxers. I just want a clean fight and may the best man win.
